About this deal

The Makita DUR 181 has been cleverly designed to be a good all-round tool for the average-sized garden. It’s easily manoeuvrable, and able to manage a wide range of jobs. Its lightness and balance mean that anyone small or not particularly strong could use it. Battery life and power is also impressive for its size. Verdict position adjustable pivoting head enables user to adjust cutting angle, allowing for trimming in tight spaces Please note that at 14.08 pm on 26 June 2023, Arvindar Singh and Ben Jones of FRP Advisory Trading Limited were appointed as Joint Administrators of F R Jones and Son Limited. The Makita DUR181 arrived in sections but was easily put together using a Phillips screwdriver. It’s robust and feels solid and well made. The angle of the head can be adjusted through nearly 90 degrees to suit either working on a bank or down at ground level, and can be rotated 180 degrees for edging.

Since the Makita DUR181 has only a single string – more powerful machines have two – it means you can’t cut that fast. Nevertheless, I still managed to strim 20 square metres of orchard grass in ten minutes. The 5 position pivoting head enables the user to adjust the cutting angle, allowing for trimming in tight spaces Hypothetically, you could use a strimmer to cut a lawn, but it would take a long time. Strimmers are much less efficient at this task than lawn mowers, and it’s more difficult to get an even cut. For edging, the head can be rotated through 180 degrees, giving you a clear view of what you’re doing as you work. It gave a nice result, and impressively even managedto cut through turf. Easy to change spool assembly - Nylon cord can be fed from the spool by bumping the bump feed button against the groundTheres a knob with a grip, just beyond the loop handle, which is used to extend and retract the shaft – and rotate it for edging. It can be extended by 200mm to suit different heights of user. A thumb-pushed safety catch and a trigger start up the strimmer. You push the safety catch forward and pull the trigger, and work holding the trigger. Battery capacity warning lamp: A fitted battery capacity warning light on this LXT cordless grass shear shows clearly when the 18v Li-ion battery is running low - blinking red= battery power has been nearly used up. Solid red- battery power has been used up (Battery protector will shut off the power). position pivoting head enables the user to adjust the cutting angle, allowing for trimming in tight spaces Petrol strimmers. Powered by petrol these typically have steer handles - explained in more detail below - and a curved, angled shaft. Because they use fuel, they’re often more powerful than corded and cordless strimmers, but petrol is polluting and messy to store and use. They’re also heavy, noisy and need regular servicing. Thanks to the rise of cordless batteries, they’re less common nowadays, particularly for home use. position rotating rear handle: The Makita brushless hedge trimmer has a rear handle that can rotate into 5 different positions. This allows you to cut and trim at a number of angles for a clean, professional finish.

Line feed and blade replacements. It’s useful if a blade strimmer comes with spare blades, so you don’t run out if one breaks in the middle of a job. You should be able to get a new spool of line for a line strimmer or replace the whole head. With both types it's helpful if the spare blades or line can be stored on the tool. Telescopic pipe shaft: The cordless grass line trimmer can be adjusted thanks to the telescopic pipe shaft. It is adjustable in length from 1,150mm to 1,330mm this allows you to adjust the length for various jobs.Well balanced tool design - The battery position is located under the main handle, exactly at the place that plays a role of pivot point when the tool is swung like a pendulum for grass cutting. The battery is therefore not swung around to minimize user’s fatigue The main shaft has an adjustment range of 180mm for comfortable height adjustment and the strimming head has a 5 position pivoting head for perfect working posture. The single line head is bump feed and features a metal bump head for longer life and is easy to rewind with new trimmer cord. The on-off switch has a safety button to prevent accidental operation and a light to indicate low and empty battery status. Straps and safety harnesses. A shoulder strap or safety harness is an excellent bonus feature. It takes some of the weight of the tool, making it more comfortable to use, and also helps balance it, for better manoeuvrability and a more precise cut. Cutting head. The cutting head is the most important feature on a strimmer. It should be adjustable, so you can change the angle of the cut to cope with inclines and fiddly jobs. In most models, the head turns 90°, so you can trim along the edges of paths and flowerbeds. In the very best models, the cutting head also has wheels to help guide along edges and support the weight of the strimmer. It uses a single nylon cord. Press in two latches on both sides of the spool cover and the whole nylon cord cutting head pops off. You lift the spool out, and wind new cord on – it takes a hefty 8 metres, which is twice the amount that fits into more heavy-duty strimmers.

This is a lightweight and powerful cordless strimmer with a telescopic shaft. Even with the large 4.0 Ah battery installed, it weighs just 3 kg, which earns it a BBC Gardeners’ World Magazine Best Buy for large areas. Well balanced tool design- The battery position is located under the main handle, exactly at the place that plays a role of pivot point when the tool is swung like a pendulum for grass cutting. The battery is therefore not swung around to minimize user’s fatigue The machine is nicely balanced; the length of the strimmer is height-adjustable from 1.433 metres to 1.229, so it was just as comfortable for me to work with, at 6ft 5, as it was for my girlfriend at 5ft 4. Handle types. There are two types of strimmer handles. The most common is a round, circular handle on the shaft of the strimmer, called a loop handle. It makes the strimmer easy and comfortable to control, and on the best models, it can be slid up and down the shaft, so you can adjust it to your height. Alternatively, there are ‘steer’ handles - two handles rather than a loop. These offer more control and let you use a comfortable scything motion when you cut, but they take up room, and can be a little more expensive. They’re also far more common on brushcutters and petrol strimmers than electric or cordless strimmers, so you might not find steer handles on many domestic models. There was some mild vibration, which you’ll always experience with single-string strimmers, but it might prove uncomfortable for a user with a condition such as arthritis. The vibration was low: the Control of Vibration at Work Regulations 2005 specify a maximum of 5m/s2 for hand-arm vibration, and the Makita DUR181 only displays 2.5m/s2 or less.Battery capacity warning lamp will show you how much charge is left, so you never run out of power unexpectedly Spool assembly is easy to attach and remove, also easy to rewind. It comes equipped with a metal bump feed button for wear resistance

The Makita DUR181RT String Trimmer is a must-have garden tool this season. This lightweight garden trimmer is powered by lithium-ion batteries giving you the freedom to roam and cut wherever you desire, without trailing cables. It features a well-balanced tool design for optimum handling and an adjustable cutting head to get in all those hard to reach areas. A great feature of this tool is its Telescopic Pipe Shaft which is adjustable in length from 1150mm to 1330mm. Achieve a professional finish every time with the Makita DUR181RT. Features: The Makita BL 1840B battery fits into a Makita DC18RC charger. The battery took 36 minutes to charge. It has a fan, so there was a continuous soft hum as it worked. Both charger and battery were easy to use, with the charger featuring a helpful display of indicator lights. They came on in different combinations to show the condition of your battery – fully charged, part-charged, broken. Other lights indicate if your charger is malfunctioning. I was impressed with the efficiency of this system, and the fast charge time.

5-Stage Tilt-able Cutting Head

The Makita Cordless String Trimmer’s all-round manoeuvrability is pretty amazing. And, of course, it has a five-angle adjustable pivoting head, which makes it superb for trimming and edging.
