About this deal

Well this was a ride and a half. Doesn’t the thought of an autonomous car sound wonderful. You can have a nap, or read a book whilst being driven anywhere – in these fictional Arrival cars there isn’t even a steering wheel so you do get that complete chauffeured experience. Perfect. But wait…what if something goes wrong.

Linwood Barclay has taken every fear I had about self-driving cars and magnified them. I love it! But it's safe to say that I will be firmly hanging on to my traditional gas-guzzling car, thank you very much. I’d recently lost my reading mojo and was struggling to find something to read that would keep me entertained and then I remembered LINWOOD BARCLAY and realised I had his latest 3 books on my kindle so I randomly chose LOOK BOTH WAYS to read next.

Finally, there is a poignant foreword written by Linwood Barclay in which he explains his love of cars, how he came to own a precious family vehicle and the inspiration for Look Both Ways.

LOOK BOTH WAYS requires nerves of steel and a strong stomach to survive --- sort of like the literary equivalent of a high-tech rollercoaster ride. Just remember to hold on for your life and keep your arms and legs in the vehicle at all times!" This is slightly different to the previous books I’ve read by Linwood Barclay as it’s more of a techo thriller with a futuristic spin. The community of Garrett Island, off the coast of Massachusetts have agreed to be the guinea pigs for a new car company Arrival Inc. They have created a brand new electric car which is 100% autonomous, responding to voice commands and providing the “passengers” a safe journey as each car is networked through software which enables them to communicate with each other. Arrival Inc has arranged a huge press event to showcase their cars which is being managed by Sandra Montrose, a PR executive, resident of Garrett Island, single mum and recent widower. This project could turn her life around as it’s so high profile, but being a Barclay thriller, you know that something is about to go terribly wrong. A deliriously fun thrill ride inspired by Barclay’s decades-long love of cars, the book lampoons the current driverless or autonomous vehicle craze in a deadly way. He also clearly draws upon both the high-octane suspense and supernatural chills of novels he deems personal favorites: Richard Matheson’s DUEL and Stephen King’s CHRISTINE. LOOK BOTH WAYS may read like a suspense/thriller, but it also expertly toes the lines of horror and sci-fi. DISCLOSURE: Thank you to Harlequin Australia, HQ & MIRA, via Netgalley for providing a digital ARC of Look Both Ways by Linwood Barclay for review. All opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own personal opinions.Look Both Ways is a novel by best-selling Canadian author, Linwood Barclay. Arrival Inc. has taken the innovative and expensive step of swapping all the vehicles on Garrett Island, Massachusetts, with their self-drive cars for a one-month trial. This also necessitates paying disgruntled car dealerships, gas stations and the police to cover their projected income lost. To make matters one hundred times worse, the cars aren’t just going berserk, they’re deliberately seeking out as many people to kill as possible. LOOK BOTH WAYS was exactly what I need to recharge my reading mojo. It’s gripping, exciting, fast paced, full of action and has a couple of super little twists within the storyline. It’s an easy read which kept me completely entertained throughout and I would definitely recommend it.

Kudos, Mr. Barclay, for keeping me hooked until the very end. I cannot wait to see what else you have in store for fans soon. Tech millionaire Miles Cookson has more money than he can ever spend, and everything he could dream of—except time. He has recently been diagnosed with a terminal illness, and there is a fifty percent chance that it can be passed on to the next generation. For Miles, this means taking a long hard look at his past… This is a standalone thriller by author Linwood Barclay who takes a little swerve from his normal genre of murder mysteries with this one. Written because of the authors love of cars and based in a futuristic environment. I have to admit I prefer Barclay’s normal genre and this book slightly failed to capture me more because of the subject and setting rather than the writing ability. Look Both Ways is fast-paced with plenty of action. It's exciting. It's scary. It's also possible . . .

A car company persuades the residents of an island to surrender all their cars for new self- driving cars. For a while, it’s fun for everyone. Until one day the cars stop obeying voice commands — and turn aggressive. Barclay’s 2011 thriller, The Accident, has been turned into the six-part television series L’Accident in France, and he adapted his novel Never Saw it Coming for the movie, directed by Gail Harvey and starring Eric Roberts and Emily Hampshire. Several of his other books either have been, or still are, in development for TV and film. Is this all just a tragic accident, a technological malfunction with deadly consequences? Or were the vehicles programmed to act this way in a cruel act of corporate sabotage? Or could it be that the Arrivals have a mind of their own?
