Letchworth was a dry town until 1960 with just one inn, The Skittles, set up in 1907. This sold only soft drinks and so was the legendary 'pub without beer'; it was soon also without skittles as the locals shunned the game. We have all seen first-hand the destructive impact COVID-19 has had on the Letchworth community, from individuals and families to businesses and charities. There is no need to go out and buy expensive equipment. Either use materials from your watercolour / oil painting or source brushes and pads from outlets such as The Range or Hobby Craft. The emphasis is on having a go and having fun! Just the ones which all charities have really – shortage of volunteers and future students – today’s world is not an easy one and people struggle to make a living, raise families and do voluntary work or non vocational studies. Kate Thompson has trawled a range of sources such as record books, newspapers, minutes and scrapbooks to provide a fascinating picture of a type of educational service that receives nothing like the attention of other institutions. The overall impression is of a high-quality facility serving a non-metropolitan community with dedication and fervour. That it has survived 100 years to justify this publication is a testament to the vision, passion and resilience of a band of people who deserve not to be forgotten.” Tim Lomas, The Local Historian In the early 1950s, William Wallace Kincaid, Director of the Spirella Company left money to the Settlement to enlarge the Main Hall to allow a proper stage and behind the scenes facilities to be constructed and this opened in 1956. In 1975 a purpose built Craft building was added to the rear of the main building, paid for by the Letchworth Garden City Corporation. Today, Letchworth Settlement is one of the very last of its kind still in operation as it was almost 100 years ago. I am a contemporary basket-maker and willow artist. My inspiration comes from nature, landscape, and the human condition. I graduated in 2004 with a degree in Applied Arts 3D Media and began working professionally in 2008.Drawing has always been part of my life from childhood onwards, as has the natural world, and drawing has enabled me to really see the world around me. All of which has led to a degree in Scientific Illustration which has given me the skills to accurately describe this world. I have always wanted to share these skills which led me to teaching whilst continuing with my art. I have taught in adult education, taught adults with addiction, adults with learning difficulties, family learning, and children. I teach different art subjects, not just drawing, to different ages and abilities throughout Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire.
