Empire isn't the only canonical appearance for wampas. A wampa pelt appears in the Trandoshan hunting lodge in "Wookiee Hunt" in Star Wars: The Clone Wars; it was one of the many trophies the Trandoshans displayed. In the comics, the creature appears in Marvel's Star Wars #10. Wampas are mentioned in a couple of books, too. But my favorite reference? In The Clone Wars episode "Missing in Action," there's a sign on Pons Ora that translates to "Adopt-a-Wampa." Who volunteers as a foster for abandoned wampas? Hoth isn't a place I'd label as a vacation destination. The inclement weather might make the frosty planet suitable for winter sports, but I don't foresee the Star Wars universe version of the Olympic Commission (if there is one) choosing the locale for development anytime soon. One reason? The native animal life, including the wampa. Middle Earth creatures: Cave Troll \ Fell Beast \ Goblin King \ Great Eagle \ Gwaihir \ Mirkwood Spider \ Treebeard \ Shelob \ Smaug \ Warg \ During the Battle of Hoth, several cold weather assault stormtroopers were slain by a wampa after opening a door to a room with a clearly marked warning sign. [4] After several days, the wampa that lost his arm to Skywalker recovered enough to hunt again, although it was an adjustment to do so with only one arm. After growing strong enough for the venture, the wampa made its way to Echo Base, only to find it abandoned due to the still-recent Battle of Hoth. The wampa thus reclaimed the caves as his home and hoped to reunite his clan. They combined tones from an elephant at the Oakland Zoo (collected by Randy Thom) with a the squawk of a sea lion from Marineland of the Pacific. To create the wampa's roar, sound-effects artist Randy Thom recorded the noises made by an elephant in the Oakland Zoo. Sound designer Ben Burtt and the film's sound team then recorded the cries of a sea lion at Marineland of the Pacific public oceanarium and mixed that with the elephant recording to produce the final effect. [1] Vicious wampas would occasionally sneak into the base in the dead of night, forcing the closure of various passageways. On one occasion, the Rebel Leia Organa, the Wookiee Chewbacca, and the astromech droid R2-D2 were involved in such a situation. [9]
