In this week’s #ForgottenFriday we are so excited to talk about a surprising recent donation made to Eden Camp. The Donation They signed a recording contract with Pye Records and released their best known studio album, The New Religion in 1966. The band also played as support for the Who, Sonny & Cher, Rod Stewart (who was also on Pye Records at the time) and the Rolling Stones. The band often used the Abbey Road Studios, once being there at the same time the Beatles were recording. Their live performance was captured in the album London Swings – Live at the Marquee Club, also featuring the Alan Bown Set. Jimmy James and the Vagabonds were labelmates and rivals of Geno Washington & the Ram Jam Band. [4] Michael " Jimmy" James (born 13 September 1940) [2] is a British-Jamaican soul singer, [2] [3] known for songs like "Come to Me Softly", " Now Is the Time" and " I'll Go Where Your Music Takes Me". Based in Britain, he has performed as the lead singer of Jimmy James and the Vagabonds since the mid-1960s. [2] Career [ edit ] The song's lyrics spoke of environmental issues, urging people to take immediate action. [5] Robin Carmody of Freaky Trigger praised the song as a "heartbreakingly naive" example of "singalong mid-70s pop". [1]

The Vagabonds disbanded in 1970, but James, who owned the name, reformed the band with a new, all white line-up in 1974. They had hits in the UK Singles Chart with " I'll Go Where Your Music Takes Me" and "Now Is The Time". Without James, the Vagabonds recorded an album (Ska-Time) as "Jamaica's Original Vagabonds" which was released in 1970. At the Sunderland Empire James met Isabelle Darby, a music hall dancer and they married in 1921; [1] [6] they had one son, James Casey junior. With his act James toured the musical halls, theatres and clubs around the country. He appeared at the Royal Variety Performance in 1953 and stole the show with his routine The Chipster—a lecture on the occupational hazards of preparing chips. [1] MTV and VH1 credit the "Jimmy James" music video to Nathanial Hörnblowér, Adam Yauch's director alter ego. However, on the Beastie Boys' Sabotage VHS tape released in 1994, the "Jimmy James" music video is listed as being co-directed by Yauch (as Nathanial Hörnblowér) and Lisa Ann Cabasa, an actress, and Yauch's girlfriend at the time the video was made. Cabasa directed the dance sequences in the music video and also appeared in the video as one of the silhouetted female dancers. From Berlin, James was moved to the notoriously bleak Stalag Luft I at Barth on the northern coast of Germany. The camp was still under construction at this stage of the war and the reality was that the Germans were only slowly coming to terms with POWs. Within a matter of days, Jimmy and W/Cdr John ‘Death’ Shore were planning an escape– the route was to be via the camp incinerator. Digging a highly audacious tunnel, John Shore managed to clear the wire and escape, whilst Jimmy was caught in the act and sent directly to the cooler. Albert P. Clark (2005). 33 Months as a POW in Stalag Luft III: A World War II Airman Tells His Story. Fulcrum Pub. ISBN 978-1-55591-536-0.

MC: You have accomplished so much doing, from doing brilliant impersonations and recording your own music; what is one avenue you have not explored that you want to? Following initial interrogation, James and a small band of others were taken to Berlin and paraded through the capital. "It was a rather ghastly affair really. They weren't hostile, as the bombing hadn't really started, but we were rather curious to them, I suppose". British Film Institute Film & Television Database. Archived from the original on 26 October 2008 . Retrieved 24 January 2009. James was born in India, the son of a tea-planter, Herbert Mark James (son of Canon Mark James) and his wife Elizabeth Isabella Loosemore. James was educated at The King’s School, Canterbury. Returning to London following his mother’s death, James and his father started a tea importing business that suffered from the 1930s economic downturn and ultimately failed. Soon after, his father died of pneumonia which left Jimmy alone. Recalling that he had relatives in the United States, he worked his passage on a coal ship across the Atlantic, often acting as pilot due to the drunken nature of the crew. Upon arrival, he soon realised that his relatives were also suffering due to the Great Depression that was sweeping across the US.

At the end of the war he was awarded the Military Cross (MC) and Mentioned in Despatches [6] for his repeated escape attempts. The citation for his MC was published in a supplement to the London Gazette of 14 May 1946 (dated 17 May 1946) and read: [7] James regularly performs around the UK with former Foundations frontman, Clem Curtis. The pair, along with Flirtations vocalist Earnestine Pearce have toured with 'The Soul Explosion'. We deserve life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness just like anybody else; we have inalienable rights too. This administration is making it so hard, but we will win and I’m encouraged with people like RuPaul, Ellen, Anderson Cooper, Andy Cohen, Leslie Jordan Lady Bunny and so many others who are out in the media. Look at someone like Bianca Del Rio killing it worldwide; they represent us! The young queens coming up should keep spreading the light and love message of inclusion.

Although James appeared on stage as a convincing drunk, often with a cigar or cigarette in his mouth, he was teetotal [3] [6] [8] and did not smoke off stage. [2] His weaknesses were gambling and his famed generosity [2] which may account for his declared bankruptcies in 1936, 1955 and 1963. [6] Following initial interrogation, James and a small band of others were taken to Berlin and paraded through the capital.
