About this deal

Herbert's final novel has an eerie political edge. Ash imagines Princess Diana and her secret son as well as Lord Lucan, Colonel Gaddafi and Robert Maxwell living together in a Scottish castle. [15] Jones, Stephen, ed. (1992). James Herbert: By Horror Haunted. London: Hodder & Stoughton. ISBN 978-0-450-53810-0. Cerfontyne said that at Yeovil police station, a “reception committee” of officers was waiting, ready to help those transporting James get him into a cell. They aren’t far away, Dis…Their presence is so strong, yet they’re so confused. Oh…Dis…they’re desperately afraid.’

Portent by James Herbert was a blast to read. I love disaster novels and movies, and this was a disaster novel like none other that I have read. Any kind of natural disaster that can occur on Earth happened in detail in this book. I read this book in two sittings and hated to put it down even once. The story is fascinating and Herbert’s explanation for why things are happening is worthy of Crichton in my opinion. The second is a heavy reliance on a psychic character who always shows up just in time to move the plot forward. And man, does Herbert rely on one in this story. Like, literally, there'd basically be no story without someone who has no right knowing what they know showing up to push Diz in the right direction, over and over again.

Others" by James Herbert is a spine-chilling horror novel that delves into the concept of evil and the supernatural. Set in a quaint English village, eerie events begin to unfold, leading our protagonist to unearth a dark and sinister secret. From the age of 16, Herbert attended Hornsey College of Art, where he spent four years studying graphic design, print and photography. He worked as a paste-up artist and a typographer at one advertising agency, and then became art director and subsequently group head at Charles Barker Advertising.

If you like your biblical end to the world stories then this is a great book to visit. No I am not giving anything away as its actually not related to biblical events more the reference to the sheer scale and number of catastrophic events that occur in this book. Assistant Chief Constable Nikki Watson said: “Our thoughts are very much with the family of James Herbert who’ve had to wait almost seven years for a conclusion to these proceedings. He was one of our greatest popular novelists, whose books are sold in thirty-three other languages, including Russian and Chinese. Widely imitated and hugely influential, his 19 novels have sold more than 42 million copies worldwide. When somebody dies in state custody, the investigation process needs to bring accountability and learning to be truly effective. In terms of accountability, no institution or person responsible for the actions that caused James to die has been brought to account.

True, there was a sideline to the story that followed a New Orleans witch mother who was basically trying to be wolverine by wearing fake metal claws, and the whole element of the planet itself having its own consciousness didn’t work for me either. The problem is that they’re also inseparable from the rest of the novel because they’re so vital for the story line. There are also "mystical" characters connected to the story - there are many kids who have to power to heal the earth, and there is a Dream Man who appears in the childrens dreams. Also there is Mama Pitie, a huge woman from New Orleans who has a church that worships the earth - by Mama Pitie is a very vile and evil person - who seeks to destroy anyone who would save people; she believe she is saving the earth Nikki Watson, an assistant chief constable with Avon and Somerset police, said fundamental changes had been made. The fact there have been so many deaths in police custody and not a single successful prosecution shows that the investigation system is flawed and the criminal justice system is utterly ineffective in this area. This is my second novel by James Herbert, and I'm proud to say this one gave me a nightmare. Why am I proud to say this? I read a lot of Koontz and King and love a good thriller and naturally enjoy a bit of a fright! It's hard for a writer to make the reader 'jump' or 'get the creeps' and for me it's the mark of a great author and an excellent book! It certainly gets the adrenalin pumping and the mind racing into the wee hours.

Here Dismas will discover the dark secret of the Others. And in an astonishing and spectacular finale he will resolve the enigma of his own existence . . . My friend and I decided to read this book together after reading the synopsis. It sounded like it would be a dark and disturbing read. Well that it was, among other things. Although I did enjoy it, I did not love it. ok. im going to be totally unfair in this review. see, i have this extra karma chip of "free unfairness" that's expiring soon, so i have to use it, like right now. because....(spoiler alert)....Nicholas Dismas is a self-employed Private Investigator with a small team working for him within hisfirm. He is also physically deformed, with malformed features, a spinal curvature resulting in a dramatic hump, a withered right leg, extensive body hair (although it is somewhat sparse on his head) and only one eye. All in all, Dismas’ appearance is one that regularly draws stares and occasional hurtful comments such as the terms ‘Monster’ or ‘Freak’. While it is not possible to say what would have happened if the missed opportunities had been taken, it is clear the outcome could have been very different,” she said.
