About this deal

Tip: If you don’t see the Bluetooth device you want displayed in the list, you may need to set the Bluetooth devices discovery setting to Advanced. To learn how, see Fix Bluetooth problems in Windows. To pair a Bluetooth printer or scanner

Sonically, the Roam hits all the right notes, delivering a wide soundstage for a speaker of its size with plenty of dynamism. Our main niggle with the Roam is how laborious it can be to get your voice assistant set up, but once you’ve overcome that hurdle, you’ll be able to revel in what a fully featured and superb-sounding Bluetooth speaker it is. Consider high-end audio brands such as Bose and Bang & Olufsen if you want a combination of stylish design and great sound – but be prepared for relatively high prices. If you want to save money then Tribit and Anker offer strong speakers that won’t break the bank. Is JBL or Bose better? We particularly enjoyed the bass response here, which is where small speakers usually fall down: Tribit is keeping quiet about the exact specifications of the driver in this model but whatever it is, it delivers impressive bass for such a small footprint. And battery life is superb, up from the 8 hours of the original Micro to a travelling or beach day-friendly 12 hours. You want an aux-in for wired listening: The only port you'll get here is a USB-C two-way charger –although it does charge your phone. The Cleer Audio Scene has this, though.

You need to play extremely loudly: It's loud, but if you’re looking for max volume, you’ll need to look at even bigger speakers, like the Tribit Stormbox Blast. Before you try anything else, turn on Bluetooth on your phone. While this step seems obvious now, you might have overlooked it in the frustration of figuring out why the speaker isn't working, especially if you keep Bluetooth always on.

If the JBL Charge 5 is too pricey but you still want a powerful and portable Bluetooth speaker, look no further than the Flip 6. As well as being cheaper, the Flip 6 is the more portable of the two and comes with a handy removable carrying strap. It’s also fully dust-resistant and waterproof, so you’re safe taking it on outdoor adventures. Battery life could be better, especially if you have the RGB lighting effects engaged, but fortunately, these can be turned off to save juice for making use of the Bang’s power bank capabilities. With an in-built microphone for calls and voice assistant functionality plus an IPX6 rating for water resistance, there’s very little this rather large speaker can’t do.Battery life of around 12 hours is less than the Charge 5, and the Flip 6 can’t be used as a power bank, but at its lower price, the JBL Flip 6 is terrific value.
