About this deal

For Bokanev, the key is reminding ourselves that our own experience and memories are inherently more valuable than any digital product. “Those rides when you were just too tired to take out your phone and later you’re like, ‘Man, I should have taken a photo’? ” he says. “That shouldn’t take away from the actual experience, because in the end, who are you trying to impress? If you were there, that should really be the end of it.” While Strava does its best to optimize our data analysis by ignoring the most obviously inaccurate data, in the end, we can only make the most out of the data provided to us from the GPS device. Put another way, when a device records bad GPS data, the only option that Strava has to improve it is to ignore portions of that bad data. Unfortunately, when, for whatever reason, a portion of your activity isn't recorded by GPS, it is not possible for us to "fill in" the missing data or "correct" the bad data. However, you do have a few good options to get credit for your efforts and manage the way that GPS data is represented by activities: If you have authored this item and are not yet registered with RePEc, we encourage you to do it here. But not everything is hunky dory in the religion of Strava. Too much data can lead to people over exerting themselves as they look for marginal gains at every possible juncture. The community feature can lead to over competitiveness, people desperately trying to get one over on their mates. In fact this user is happy to admit my first foray into Strava left me feeling exposed. I didn't allow a single person to follow me until a few months into my journey. I noticed that GoldenCheetah ( https://github.com/GoldenCheetah/GoldenCheetah/) supports file import and export of csv and fit files.

I am not exactly sure what the other fields were for as I still had my bike power meter paired, so I expect the fields for power and cadence to exist but filled with zeros. How is it possible to achieve something, yet not feel a sense of accomplishment until it’s recorded on a remote database or posted to an activity feed for all the world to see? If it’s not on Strava, it didn’t happen’... Since 2019, Strava – a fitness app that calls itself the social network for athletes – has become one of the most popular running apps. It’s revolutionised the way in which runners connect with each other, compete and conquer their goals.

Does this make sense? No, it doesn’t! It defies all logic. Yet, this was the nonsense going through my head, the predicament I faced. I actually thought it would be better for my training if I stopped, recharged my GPS and went out in the evening for the remaining 6km. The route was a familiar one to most of us. The same one that had been used for the Summer Handicap in fact. The only difference being that you only did half of it. The question was which half? Using the fitdump tool returned much more data, around 2370 data points, which gave me more hope since my run was ~38:00 minutes long, (38 * 60 = 2280)

Inspecting with the following code only returned the initial and last data points: import fitparse fitfile = fitparse.FitFile("a.fit") the scenario: You finish an epic ride only to discover that, according to your data, your performance was merely average—no trophies, no PRs, no kudos from admiring riders. Suddenly, you feel less accomplished and even disappointed. In what I’ll call the Strava Overwrite, the digital “results” may undermine our actual memories and feelings. You will find all your log files there. Select the file you want and upload it to your Strava, TrainingPeaks, or any other application. Ask yourself: Do our rides shape the kind of data and pictures we come home with? Or has the goal of getting data and pictures changed the shape of our rides? The answer is - it wouldn’t be possible. And I’ve come to realise that this is totally fine. In the ‘Real World’, where blood, sweat and tears are shed upon the trails, if it happened, it happened regardless of whether it’s recorded on your watch or phone. What matters is you physically went out and trained. The real evidence of training - and the only evidence that matters - is your performance on race day and your ability to live with a healthy body and mind.

The one positive I can take from leaving my watch at home was that I didn’t have any stats to distract me from just simply running. What I mean by this is that sometimes I will look at my pace on my watch and I’ll think ‘this is too fast’. I pay too much attention to my watch perhaps, rather than listening to my body. Well on this race I only had my body to listen to and maybe that helped me achieve something incredible that I wouldn’t have done had I been wearing my watch. I have no scientific proof for this of course and I will definitely not be leaving my watch at home again. Truth be told, I felt naked without it. You have the option to crop your activity to simply cut out the most affected parts of your activity if the bad GPS data occurred at the beginning or end of your ride or run. Here is some more information about the crop tool. Do your best to avoid environments that are always going to be problematic for a GPS signal, such as canyons, whether natural or man-made (think a city street lined by tall buildings), dense trees, etc. routinely split our cycling into an experiential “during” mode and a data-driven “after” mode. We collect ride data and photos during the ride, and enjoy them afterward. That’s great—except that sometimes, it may feel as if the point of the “during” phase is to create that stuff we can use “after.” Your device may have simply lost a connection to GPS satellites and did not record any data. Your Strava activity may be missing a map, show a straight line connecting your start and endpoints, or was automatically tagged as an indoor activity. The formula for the conversion from “semicircles” into floating point representation is given here: def convert_semicircle(i): So, what did I do at 34km of my long run? I got to the front door and thought: “This is rubbish. If I did the work but it’s not on Strava, it still bloody happened.” Then I turned around and finished the run.
