About this deal

From handcrafted designs to pieces by Alexander McQueen, Nicholas K, Tex Saverio and Juun J, the new Hunger Games film is an eye-popping fashion fantasy. The Hollywood Blog caught up with costume designer Trish Summerville to talk about the fashions she chose for Katniss, Peeta, and the competitors in the arena—plus, how she handled author Suzanne Collins’s frequent impulse to have characters appear nearly naked. Very! I think that's because Francis loves to shoot things in a real, organic way and not have to add on lots of special effects. When it came to our combat soldiers for D13, we wanted them to be really functional so we worked with the UK designer Aitor Throup. We wanted them to be lean and practical and we had a fantastic collaboration with him.' For the 75th Hunger Games, the tributes had electric-light-studded outfits. [3] District 4 - Fishing [ ] Spencer Williams: I was afraid of her! I want to be her friend, not her enemy. Now, I can’t let you go without talking about Tigris. This character must have been a costume designer’s dream, knowing that you will have a character who’s known as THE stylist of Panem later on. Tigris is always very concerned about everything that happens in the film *no spoilers* so I felt like she wore her costumes as a form of armor. Her wings and shoulders are designed to be ceremonial, but the armour can also be taken off so you can see that girl again - you can see Katniss. Even if it didn't have the wings, she could be out on the field and become a soldier." What is Jennifer like to work with?

For the 74th Hunger Games, the male and female tributes lived up to the name of their district with long light-blue outfits and luminous pearls which represent pearls in the sea, and had starfish on the shoulders. [1]

The costumes of the male and female in the 74th Hunger Games represented folded origami paper. Their headpieces were sculpted to look like a professionally made origami. [1] However, Johanna Mason later stated that their stylist was the biggest idiot in the Capitol and had dressed the District 7 tributes as trees for the last forty years, contradicting the costumes used in the films. She’s so much fun to work with. She tells people that she was my Barbie doll. But she has a lot of good ideas, she knows how things should fit, and she wanted all her clothes to be very constricting — she has that funny walk [in the movie] because she can’t walk any other way. Her shoes are so outrageously high and uncomfortable, and she wanted that. I’m like, “Are you sure you can do the scene?” And she’s like, “Yes, I’ll do it. I’ll take them off in between shots. It’ll be fine.” She was miserable, but she did it because she felt it was right. In the book, the fashions are so outrageous in the Capitol that they aren’t meant to be actually worn. And that was the point: poking fun at fashion, and how outrageous trends can be. additional set production assistant / set production assistant: second unit (as William Liebenrood) However, in the book, Katniss Everdeen observed that both tributes from District 1 were spray-painted silver, in tasteful tunics glittering with jewels. Spencer Williams: Oh, okay! I need to get in on this immediately! Congratulations Trish on this collaboration and this incredible new film – The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes . I’m so excited for everyone to see it. Thank you so much for joining me. I’m so glad we finally got to do a formal interview. This Friday, a little old movie called The Hunger Games (based on the first book from Suzanne Collins’s best-selling trilogy) hits theaters. Costume designer Judianna Makovsky had the task of re-creating the looks for the people of Panem, including the outrageous pink getup Elizabeth Banks wears as Effie Trinket, the uniforms worn by tributes as they fight to the death, and Jennifer Lawrence’s show-stopping “girl on fire” moment. Makovsky, who hadn’t even read the books before director Gary Ross offered her the gig, talks about becoming a fan, her connection to Lenny Kravitz, and whether she’s Team Peeta or Team Gale.We always take the actors’ personalities into account. I mean, I never really design the clothes until I know who the actor is. Of course they have opinions, but you also have to make the actor comfortable on-camera. That’s my job: to make it easy for them to their job, to not think about the costume. Some of these costumes, of course, are not the most comfortable things on earth, especially in that heat. But you have to let the actor’s personality shine through to a certain extent.

Trish Summerville: I also leaned into this idea of a mad scientist with a bit of Dr.Frankenstein. There’s that serious level as well, but she’s also quite playful. Viola Davis was just really brilliant to dress because she does let you do anything. She just starts transforming into this character. She was just a joy to work with and looked phenomenal. She had just come off of doing The Woman King. Her artists in makeup and hair were phenomenal. I really love her character and how much presence she commands. Everyone is afraid of her.As a little teaser, we’re working on a collaboration for wearable streetwear merchandise and jewelry that we’re doing as a nod to the film. It’ll also be nice to see what the fans think of that! Spencer Williams: Trish Summerville! I am so happy that we are finally doing an interview. It’s been a long time coming. Well, when you do these costumes, each one is your children, and they all present their own problems and issues. Perhaps the biggest problem — even bigger than dealing with visual effects — was the weather where we were shooting [in North Carolina]. It was 90, more like 100 degrees, and 100 percent humidity. camera operator: "a" camera (as Duane Manwiller) / director of photography: additional photography (as Duane Manwiller) / steadicam operator (as Duane Manwiller) The arena uniforms seem functional, but they’re also a little sexier. What were you thinking about when you designed those? And, in general, was this a little bit of a sexier Hunger Games?

So many things we had to worry about technically, how they worked. The wedding dress is definitely one of them. We had to have it so that she could spin, and it would twirl when she twirled. That wedding dress was quite heavy. I spoke with the designer of the dress, Tex Saverio, via Skype on a lot of it. He built this kind of hoop underneath, to make sure it stayed light. The spinning worked, surprisingly, really, really well. When she was onstage, I was pretty surprised at how much air it did catch. In the deepening twilight, the firelight illuminates our faces. We seem to be leaving a trail of fire off the flowing capes. Cinna was right about the minimal makeup, we both look more attractive but utterly recognizable." - Description of the District 12 costumes in the 74th [src] It’s a big mix: borrowing, loans, rentals, manufacturing, purchasing. Just because there’s so much stuff in the whole film, to be quite honest, we would have never had the time, nor the money, to build everything ourselves. I was really, really grateful that, you know, some really beautiful designers were willing to loan us pieces.

The District 10 male and female tributes had costumes that were glitzed up in golden fringe, and meant to represent cowboys and cowgirls from their district. [1] Spencer Williams: Is there any red fabric left in the world? * laughs* Now, let’s talk about the dress that everyone’s been talking about. Lucy Gray Baird, played by Rachel Zegler, wears this beautiful rainbow dress, which I gather holds a lot of significance to fans. I imagine there was quite a lot of pressure with this specific look, knowing it’s going to be featured so prominently. Tell me how this was created; I thought it was stunning. Illustration by Gloria Kim – Courtesy of Lionsgate Oh, absolutely. Absolutely. Of course, my immediate thought was, “Oh dear, how do I do all that?” That was the absolute terror factor that comes in the minute I read something. But I loved the books. I couldn’t put them down.
