About this deal

Erin A. Craig was the first ever author I truly fell in love with so it was safe to say I was incredibly hyped for not only a new release but a chance to read this in advance of its release!

The romance between Verity and Alexander was so pure and it was sweet watching it evolve. Verity has never had any sort of relationship like this, so she struggled a bit fitting her experiences with her expectations.

Did we miss something on diversity?

And I LOVE how this book showed that sometimes people can be more scarier than supernatural elements.

This book ruined me for any other YA fantasy/sci-fi novels. Now, I compare each of them with this book, and I probably won't enjoy most of them. Trigger Warnings TL;DR: infertility, erectile disfunction, open door sex dream, book of victorian pornography What follows is a year of darkness, emotional strife and the hardships of winter combined with malevolence waiting in the darkness and violence. We learn how easy it is for neighbor to turn against neighbor. We see this all though the eyes of Elleria Downing, our heroine and half a set of twins. Shortly after the vote, tragedy strikes the Downing family, leaving Ellerie to look after the family farm and her younger siblings. It's a lot, but Ellerie rises to the occasion. We know a lot of Verity's family history from the first book, and we do get a bit more here, but learning about Alex's family, the Laurents, was so intriguing. Without giving too much away, I sort of feel like their last name should have been Moreau... The Plague has left a population divided between Elites and Ordinaries—those who have powers and those who don’t; now, an Ordinary teen fights for her life. Ellerie Downing lives with her family in Amity Falls. On the cusp of adulthood, Ellerie finally gets to vote in the town proceedings. She struggles with her decision, but ultimately votes for the path she thinks best, even though it may differ from the opinions of those she loves most. Ellerie and her sisters are so adorable, easy to relate and it was quite fun to read their genuine, loyal relations. Their sisterhood bond reminded me of March Sisters. They get through the tough times together, supporting each other!

sis had her girlboss-gatekeep-gaslight moment at the end but at what cost 😔 (it was so dumb oh my God) It’s picturesque, if you’re looking to get murdered. The setting of gothic romances are usually set in a seemingly haunted house or castle. Highmoor gave me major Crimson Peak vibes… in other words: if this house was real I wouldn’t go near it to save my life! What a mess. I had so many conflicting emotions while reading this to where I’m not even sure what the most disappointing aspect was. Sometimes books start off slowly or things don’t make sense at first, but eventually they all come together in a beautiful, cohesive way. This was definitely not that, though. I’m don’t know what Small Favors was going for, just that it did not get there at all.

When their sister Mercy sends word that the Duchess of Bloem—wife of a celebrated botanist—is interested in having Verity paint a portrait of her son, Alexander, Verity jumps at the chance, but Camille won’t allow it. Forced to reveal the secret she’s kept for years, Camille tells Verity the truth one day: Verity is still seeing ghosts, she just doesn’t know it.EAC is a master when it comes to developing a world shrouded in the dark and the mysterious. this isnt a story that will give you nightmares, but its definitely one that will have you wary of the things that hide in the shadows. this story pulls inspiration from ‘the island of dr. moreau’ and ‘the haunting of hill house’ and creates the perfect blend of scary sci-fi and creepy gothic paranormal. I also enjoyed very much the complexity of the familial relationships, both Verity's and Alexander's. While the atmosphere was the highlight for me, I think the character work and the way the relationships played out deserve top marks as well. When I opened up Small Favors— such an innocuous title— I couldn’t even remember adding it to my TBR just 6-7 months ago. It definitely was a story inspired by myths and fantasy. The climax was bloody and awful and although this book is much less blatantly spooky than I expected, there is a unique kind of horror in watching all these people you've spent the length of the novel getting to know turning on each other in terrifying flights of fancy.
