I was rather confused by this story when it began. Harley’s voice isn’t bad, but she’s portrayed as a whiny little girl who is desperate to join the Gotham’s Women’s Club, saying she should be the star member. She is rejected, of course, but insists that she must join because she’s actually a “good role model to young girls.” Then the rest of the story is Harley teaming up with the girl scouts to effect change and “smash the patriarchy.” I mean, it’s a bit hypocritical to call Harley Quinn a role model to young girls after the kind of content we’ve experienced in this comic so far, isn’t it? I also don’t feel comfortable that this story, which feels like it’s meant for very young kids, is in the same collection as the Sejic story. The artwork, while pretty well executed, also has this patchwork, cotton-textured look to it that re-enforces the feel that this is for kids. Who is this character for, DC? 3/10 How does a psychiatrist turned henchgirl become one of the most popular characters in the DC Universe? This month marks the 30 th anniversary of Harley Quinn’s debut, and it’s amazing to think about the legacy she’s had. She’s stepped out of the Joker and Batman’s shadows to star in her own comics, TV shows and movies. How did we get here? To celebrate three decades or Harley’s marvelous mayhem, let’s take a look at twelve of the moments that made her the superstar she is today. So what am I to take from this story? Was it meant to prove that Harley is a hero at heart? Because you can’t do that and have her treat death so casually at the same time. This is not writing Harley as complex or fun, it’s just writing her as a mess. Even “insane” characters need to have logic behind the writing. You can’t just have Harley react to things on whims and expect the audience to feel something for her. The third issue of the Young Justice: Targets mini-series and a Harley Quinn 30th anniversary special comic are both set for a September 2022 release from DC Comics. Cover image for 0722DC024 Harley Quinn 30th Anniversary Special #1 Stanley Artgerm Lau Cover, by (W) Various (A) Various (CA) Stanley Artgerm Lau, in stores Tuesday, September 20, 2022 from DC Comics Amanda’s work can also be seen outside the comic book community in such places as ABC’S Nightline, the New York Times, Mad Magazine, the new sci-fi Stan lee “So You Want to be a Superhero” series and the upcoming Disney Underdog movie character designs for film and television, character designs for the Los Angeles Avengers stadium football team and is featured in a Biography magazine commercial on A&E. Amanda does spot illustrations in “Revolver” magazine each month and has had a huge success with the JSA Powergirl miniseries in previous years, each issue going into 3rd printings. It’s remarkable how much the character has evolved since this debut appearance. In “Joker’s Favor,” Harley Quinn and the Joker show no sign of being a couple. Harley references beauty school rather than medical school. There’s also a moment where she quotes The Arsenio Hall Show (ask your parents about it). The Maid of Mischief was given an entirely new look for the video game, losing her jester outfit in favor of a red-and-blue bodice and thigh-high boots. Batman: Arkham Asylum and eventual franchise it birthed would prove to be so popular that Harley’s comics and merchandise began to take their cues from this new design, all while introducing our favorite Gotham troublemaker to a wider audience than ever before. Most exciting of all, Harley’s proven to be one of the most enduring elements of the franchise, with her most recent Arkham Universe adventure, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, due on consoles next year.

When the DC Universe was reinvented for the New 52 relaunch, Harley Quinn was given a dramatically different new look, a new origin and an all-new team. 2011’s The Suicide Squad #1 placed Harley on Task Force X and she’s been trying to ditch the deadly team ever since. Since this initial outing, Harley Quinn has become an iconic part of the Suicide Squad, appearing in multiple runs of the comic and both Suicide Squad films (more on that later). Batman/Superman: World’s Finest continues to just be an amazingly fun ride. Mark Waid is clearly having the time of his life in his return to DC Comics, and I couldn’t be happier for him. Coupled with amazing Dan Mora artwork in every issue, this book is a ca n’t-miss book each and every month. Cover image for 0722DC030 Harley Quinn 30th Anniversary Special #1 Adam Hughes Cover, by (W) Various (A) Various (CA) Adam Hughes, in stores Tuesday, September 20, 2022 from DC Comics After trudging through a Jimmy Palmioti Harley story, we get into a Suicide Squad one where she takes on a much more serious voice and personality. I’m not saying this more dramatic Harley is bad, in fact it’s very refreshing to read normal dialogue after the Palmioti story. I’m just rehashing the fact that the identity of Harley Quinn is completely changed from writer to writer.DC, part of Warner Bros. Learn more at DC.com. No, my favorite takes on Harley are ones that are a little more grounded in her being an engaged member fo the universe she’s in, rather than a knowing participant in a fiction. That’s why I was pleased to see my two favorite takes on Harley over the years make it into this celebration issue. DC Comics digital-first series available in both digital and print editions; Season One, Two and Three complete and on sale I still can’t believe I’m going through a revolving door of characters that happen to be called Harley Quinn, with different voices and personalities in each and every story. Here we have a short tale that’s supposed to cast Harley as an actual jester, making her way through RPG style quests. This was initially meant to be Harley’s only appearance, but there was something magical about Sorkin’s performance. Nobody could forget the way she said “Mistah Jay” or landed a perfectly timed punchline. Harley Quinn had arrived and the DC Universe would never be the same.

On the 11 th of September in the year 1992, fans around the world tuned in to watch Batman: The Animated Series, unaware of the history that was being made before them. The episode was called “Joker’s Favor” and it centered around the Clown Prince manipulating an average man named Charlie. When breaking the story, writer Paul Dini thought it would be fun to put a woman in the Joker’s gang, similar to the moll characters from the Adam West Batman series. Letterers: Dave Sharpe, Josh Reed, Pat Brosseau, Deron Bennett, Tom Napolitano, Saida Temofonte, and Clayton Cowles To celebrate 30 years of Harley Quinn, Warner Bros. Consumer Products, DC and Palm NFT Studio are releasing a new NFT collection dedicated to the Clown Princess of Crime. Artists: Chad Hardin, Rafael Albuequerque, Stjepan Sejic, Riley Rossmo, Mico Suayan, Jason Badower, Guillem March, Erica Henderson, John Timms, Dan Hipp, Terry Dodson, and Rachel Dodson Then there’s the plot itself, which shows Harley trying to hang out with Alfred, and they have long conversations before Harley helps Alfred fight some villains. I was questioning in my head the whole time why Alfred was allowing a crazy person with a murder record to drink tea with him and caper about Wayne Manor, even if she is supposed to be reformed. But that’s another element to Palmiotti’s Harley. He changes anything from DC canon at will to fit his story. This has caused confusion over his run for years as people couldn’t figure out if it was supposed to be canon or not.Dark Crisis: Young Justice continues to look at the history of the team and how that interacts with the characters we know and love today, for better or for worse. I’m sad that the reveal in this issue was spoiled by solicits because it’s a fun idea that I wouldn’t have seen coming had they not put it there. It reminds me of the end of Suicide Squad 2016, when Harley resists and chooses to defeat the Enchantress and save her “friends” despite not being given any character development in that direction for the entire movie. Flipping Harley from one contradiction to the next is not complex characterization, once again, it’s just a mess. In many ways, Margot Robbie can be considered the casting that launched a thousand cosplays. In 2016, Task Force X came to the big screen for the first time in the David Ayer-directed Suicide Squad…and of course, Harley Quinn was on the roster.
