About this deal

For testing we're using our Ryzen 7 5800X3D test system using 32GB of DDR4-3200 CL14 memory along with the latest available display drivers. Resizable Bar was enabled for all games tested at 1080p and 1440p, and we'll take a close look at the data for about a dozen of the titles tested before jumping into the usual breakdown graphs. We've chosen to evaluate performance in both of the recent Tomb Raider titles, with the first being 2016 release Rise of The Tomb Raider. This game's integrated benchmark remains a good test of GPU performance, although actual gameplay can be significantly more demanding. The RTX 2080 Ti is about 20 per cent ahead of the GTX 1080 Ti here, with an average score of 80fps for the RTX card compared to 63fps for the GTX 1080 Ti. The GTX 1080 Ti outperforms its closest RTX competitor here, although as we'll see that trend doesn't hold forever. Rise of the Tomb Raider: Very High, SMAA s The Witcher 3 remains a favourite for gamers and system builders alike, as we evaluate performance by a good old-fashioned Roach ride through the muddy streets of Novigrad. The RTX 2080 Ti manages a solid result of 77fps on average, compared to 60fps for the RTX 2080 - a differential of around 22 per cent. The GTX 1080 Ti is also competitive at 64fps average, so it's another solid result for the older card here. The Witcher 3: Ultra, POST-AA, No Hairworks The RTX 2080 Ti is far and away the best-performing graphics card on the market, delivering at least 60 frames per second at 4K in all but one of the games that we tested. By comparison, the GTX 1080 Ti only manages that feat in three of the games in our benchmark suite, and largely in older titles. We recently received an Asus TUF Gaming RTX 3080 LHR variant to test and Steve found it was the same as the non-LHR card in gaming performance, with the same cooler design and thermals. This works across most LHR GPUs, and with the majority of new GeForce GPUs hitting the market now being LHR variants, there's nothing to worry about for gamers.

This is a weak result for the aging Pascal flagship, however the 1440p results were more competitive as the 1080 Ti delivered similar results to that of the 2060 Super. What happens in the new GPU market is usually reflected in the used market, and that's also true this month. Used GPU PricingOlder games like The Witcher 3 and War Thunder, or Unreal engine games such as PUBG and The Outer Worlds is where the GTX 1080 Ti does best, while it's typically the latest titles where it performs at its worst.

Moving on to F1 22 we have another game where the GTX 1080 Ti is delivering exceptional performance with 201 fps at 1080p using the high quality preset. First, HEED the warnings about the size of this card. If you buy a new card every couple of years and notice that the images are not quite conveying the size of new gen GPUs, measure your case for this thing. To call it large does not do it justice. Even if you clear the distance to your case front, remember cabling. The only negative thing I can say about this card so far is that it is indeed so large, that in thermal terms, your case will henceforth be divided into two parts: the part north of the video card and the part south of it. The physical connectors on the RTX 2080 Ti are also upgraded over the previous generation, with DisplayPort 1.4a allowing the connection of an 8K display at its full 60Hz refresh rate using only a single cable. Perhaps more practical in the short term, USB-C VirtualLink combines data and video over a single reversible cable for next-generation VR headsets. There are a few other glimmers of positivity here. Nvidia is clearly transitioning significant portions of their GPU offerings to LHR GPUs, which are now forming the majority of sales for some graphics cards such as the RTX 3060 Ti. Even with the latest developments raising the LHR limit cap, these cards are more accessible and affordable for gamers. The LHR program has received its share of criticism, but it will be interesting to hear from actual users what you think of it now that it seems to be helping lower GPU prices. Discover next-generation VR performance, the lowest latency, and plug-and-play compatibility with leading headsets—driven by NVIDIA VRWorks™ technologies. VR audio, physics, and haptics let you hear and feel every moment.Next is the 2018 Tomb Raider game, Shadow of the Tomb Raider. This game is more graphically challenging than its predecessor, and its benchmark is also more representative of in-game performance. The RTX 2080 Ti is the only card to exceed an average of 60fps once more, and this time there's less than a single frame per second in it! The GTX 1080 Ti doesn't perform as well in this newer game, with an average frame-rate of 43fps and a 28 per cent gap to the RTX 2080 Ti. It's also worth keeping in mind using deep learning super sampling could boost these scores higher, as we saw earlier from the Final Fantasy XV DLSS demo. Shadow of the Tomb Raider DX12: Highest, TAA The new RTX branding for the new Turing cards suggest a seismic shift in what GPUs can do, so we'll first look at these new features to see whether they're worth the early adopter tax. Real-time ray tracing (RTX) offers more realistic visuals and deep learning super sampling (DLSS) could provide a performance advantage, but how many games support this new technology and what kind of numbers are we talking about? There are other new additions too, so it's worth discussing all of this in a little more detail so you can know what you're getting yourself into. The AMD RX 6900 XT increased the most in price, possibly due to a greater than expected drop in price last month. The card with the most volume, and in close competition to the RTX 3070, the Radeon RX 6700 XT, increased in price by 8 percent. Meanwhile, the scalper volume of AMD's higher end GPUs is very low, suggesting that AMD is mostly making their mid-range offerings at the moment.
