About this deal

Its weapons are even unique as well – its power claw is a standard Dreadnought Close Combat Weapon on paper, but it has the horrifyingly good rule Ghost Razor – reroll successful Invulnerable saves from this weapon. If you want to clear out Firedrakes, this is how you do it. Its boltguns even cause Blind ! When they returned to realspace and their waiting Primarch, they were told that they had only been gone for a few moments in subjective time. After Argel Tal told Lorgar all that had transpired in the Eye of Terror, the survivors were honoured and the Serrated Sun Chapter was renamed the Gal Vorbak, the "Blessed Sons" in the dialect of the Word Bearers' homeworld of Colchis. For me, at least, painting Horus’ armor was similar to if I painted 40K Guilliman’s power armor in Abaddon’s colors. There is a lot of subtle sculpted detail on the armor. To that end, drybrushing was a very good friend to help me make sure the armor detail became visible.

This Rite is intended to evoke the cults and warp worship which took over the Word Bearers as they fell to Chaos, and emphasises use of warpcraft and Daemons. Ever wonder why some armies make a strong impact on the table, despite not being painted to ‘Eavy Metal standards? It’s probably due in no small part to a well-chosen colour palette. Our fri end JF Dubeau from the 40K Radio podcast joins us to offer some sage advice on coming up with a great scheme. You can be rough in your application (avoid neatness), but try to leave some of the previous layer showing by drybrushing less vigorously or covering a smaller area (such as against the base of the buildings): IX- Angel's Tears • Burning Eyes • High Host • Contemptor-Incaendius • Crimson Paladins • Dawnbreaker • Sanguinary Guard •

Next the red. Same strategy here, making sure to only cover the brown and leave the edges exposed. I use Mephiston Red and I’m doing this on the teeth as well, plus doing other plates with Altdorf Guard Blue.

As is tradition, I neglected to take photos during the most crucial part of the process: Painting the terrain! But bear with me, I’ll walk you through it: A fast-strike specialist who oversaw the Battle of Calth, Hol Beloth is a Praetor level character who can ignore the first failed save of any game (really good!), and can increase all Word Bearers Legionaries to WS5 (if they aren’t already that or better) for one turn once per game. This can lead to some devastating charges, particularly as he causes Fear if he is the Warlord. Erebus needs no introduction – he is the First Heretic, and the true architect of the Horus Heresy – his teachings are what corrupted Lorgar, and his theft of the Anathame triggered the events which led to the fall of Horus on Davin. And on top of that, if it explodes, its S6 AP5 in a seven inch (“Massive”) blast with Soul Blaze . This makes the Mhara Gal a terror in close combat, as the usual Contemptor-killers like Cataphractii are swinging on 5+ to hit it, and a lot of the “usual” anti tank weapons are blunted. Now that I have written all this out, I do have to ask myself – why would you not take this? It can’t be dropped in by Drop Pod, so generally has to walk across the field, but overall it is a real unholy terror, and cannot be ignored. The price is high, but you really get what you pay for! If a world refused to accept the secular Imperial Truth, the Imperial Heralds would be responsible for tearing down their idols, burning their sacred texts, and purging incorrect thought from the subjugated populace. It may be their close involvement with the wychery and warpcraft practiced on these doomed worlds that helped hasten the fall of the Word Bearers; we will never truly know. While they were in the Eye of Terror, the members of the Serrated Sun Chapter were all killed by a daemon, only to awaken some time later alive once more. All of the humans on their starship were dead and their vessel had sustained critical damage. During the 7-solar-month-long journey that followed out of the Eye of Terror, many members of the Serrated Sun Chapter killed one another and survived the ordeal by drinking their fallen comrades' blood and eating the flesh of their fallen Legion Serfs.

For the armour: highlight first with Gal Vorbak, then a mix of Gal Vorbak and Word Bearers Red, finally with pure Word Bearers Red. Veteran Squad • Terminator Squad • Destroyer Squad • Moritat • Champion Consul • Honour Guard • Nullificator And finally I’ve hit the entire thing with Talent in a bottle Agrax Earthshade to make it look even dirtier and worn. Bish Bosh Bash, done son.So the final step is very easy. Highlight the Retributor Gold with Vallejo Gold and hit that dagger with Vallejo Silver. Do a 60/40 Lahmian Medium/Coeila Greenshade on the dagger to give a hint of poison and you are done! All terrain pieces were given a wash of pigment powder mixed with water. I used a ratio of approx. 3 parts pigment to 1 part of water.

A Gal Vorbak of the Unspeaking Chapter -- identified during the Battle of Calth as the Beast of ScaidavaI applied weathering / battle damage using a similar method from a previous article: Applying a dark grey to the edges of terrain with a torn piece of sponge. This army is small, but designed to combine a number of very high priority targets in 1,500 pts, while taking advantage of large Troops squads to maximise the morale benefits granted by the Word Bearers Legion special rules. The Gal Vorbak and Mhara Gal push up the board, supported by the fast-moving Assault Squad, while the Tactical Marines hold an objective or push up to hold ground. Choosing powers is absolutely broken if you combine Lorgar with the right units. Put him with Gal Vorbak, and give them Prescience for rerolls… The possibilities are endless, and being able to choose the powers gives you much-needed certainty to build strategies. Sample Army List Dry brushing again with a brighter metallic, Runefang Steel in my case, focusing on hitting the edges of everything. Gal Vorbak Red is a warm, saturated colour that has a fiery intensity, like a red-hot ember glowing with heat. The paint is well-pigmented, easy to apply, and produces a smooth, even finish.
