Thimble, Cal, Tandri, Gallina, Hem, and Pendry are just a few of the characters – and new friends – you’ll never want to forget. Retiring orc, Viv, fell in love with coffee while on a murderous hunt – a lifestyle she is now hoping to leave behind. As the name implies, friendship sheets are nearly the same as friendship books, but they are made on a single sheet of paper or stationery.

Heading to the small village of Thune, Viv is sure that the Scalvert’s Stone she has in her possession is responsible for her new business’s success – and so are a few other threatening people who now want it… It also came to the big screen as A Man Called Otto in 2023 and is perfect if you want to read more books with older protagonists. But for the purposes of this piece, I’m going to go with this linking idea of “intense feeling” in fictional friendships where there is no carnal activity and call it platonic. Poignant and touching, the themes of friendship and keeping promises will resonate with readers both young and old.

Historical Fiction Books About Friendship

J and I spent T’s nap time today looking through pictures on my computer of him with his friends and decided which ones to print off. Some friends we have more pictures of him with than others but whilst their names are still fresh in my memory it was worth printing them all off. J and I worked together selecting pictures of his friends to go into the book When I remember my childhood I think about the friends that we had – I will get out my old photo’s and look at them – some of them I can tell you straight away who the friends with me are – others I have to ask my mum or dad and some none of us have a clue. I still have the photo’s and the memories that they conjure up but wish I knew. One of the most transformative friendship books, The One and Only Ivan tells the story of a gorilla in captivity – from his point of view – and his unlikely friendships. OurRelationship (Free Couples Course) OurRelationship has been proven to help couples improve communication, intimacy, and trust. 94% would recommend it to a friend. Get Started Guilty and chasing a relationship, Delphine heads to St. Petersburg, only returning to Paris decades later brokenhearted, motherless, and as a choreographer. Can she re-kindle her childhood friendships?

While some of these books about friendship are more somber, others are sure to inspire, lift us up, and make us want to immediately call our best friend. Swing Time captures a beautiful friendship between the narrator of the story and her friend Tracy. Apart from being students at a tap dance class in London, they also share a common ethnic identity of being mixed-race. While Tracy is a prodigious dancing talent, the narrator pales in comparison. Follow their topsy-turvy journey set in three different cities that also serves as an insightful social commentary on race, class, and gender. The Interestings by Meg Wolitzer Goodreads- The Interestings by Meg Wolitzer friendship bookBelow, explore just a few books about being a good friend (OK – and also a terrible friend) for adults and teens.

This novel, glinting with what the writer James Salter called “ perfect knowledge and close observation”, contains several configurations of platonic friendship. Alex and Zach have known each other since school, as have Christine and Lydia (their wives). In the criss-cross of ambition and deception that ladders between them over decades, there is another, chiasmic, almost-platonic “happy companionship”. Read it to marvel at the rich delineation of personality and meaning. Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman Goodreads- Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman friendship book Quotes are like Lyrics, but instead of song lyrics they contain quotes from movies. These can also be themed, such as Brad Pitt movie quotes. Quotes can be plain text or decorative. This is not a fluffy friendship novel. Encounter infidelity, scandal, lies, recording sex without consent, and older men sleeping with much younger women.

Although the best of friends, when there are only two open and coveted soloist spots, all three women do unthinkable things to get on top. Many great tales have been centred on romantic love, from classic plays like Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet to modern day works of fiction like The Notebook. Of course, while these romance-filled stories are poignant, beautiful and will likely take up space on the shelf of any bookworm, they aren’t the only depiction of love to get lost in. Examine loyalty to ourselves, friendships, work, and our bodies. Books about best friends don’t get any more thought-provoking and timely than this. Twenty-year-old Tully Dawson, factory machinist and raconteur, is a dizzying, cinematic best mate for the ages. Jimmy, from the same council estate in Ayrshire, wants to be around him as much as possible. It’s 1986. They share quotes from the film A Taste of Honey and lyrics from Joy Division, and head to Manchester for a weekend of euphoric gigs. We see Tully and Jimmy 30 years later when one of them receives bad news. But they’ll always have Manchester. This is O’Hagan’s most autobiographical novel, and he says of the real-life friendship that inspired it: “I still dream of it, that Manchester – the orange buses and the long clear light of the afternoon, knowing there would be more drink, more laughter, with the future held at bay.” Book of the Month: Get the month’s hottest new and upcoming titles from Book of the Month. Some of these friendship books span across families and communities, demonstrating the importance of connection, relationships, and healthy support systems.

Happily, there are some beautiful novels which put friendship – and the power it holds – front and centre. If a read about true friends is what you’re after, here are some books to consider… A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara
