About this deal

While there’s a lot to like about the Cinestill / JOBO kit, it does have its flaws. Here’s what we dislike about this particular film developing home kit: Once you reached the developing time, pour out the developer and immediately fill the tank with the stop bath and leave it for the recommended duration that’s printed on the bottle.

Temperature control device is large and requires power. While the temp control device is one of the biggest selling points of the Cinestill kit, it may be difficult to actually use if you’re developing in a closet or other tight space without an outlet. Brand Value: Every brand of 35Mm Film Developing Kit has a value all its own. Most brands offer some sort of unique selling proposition that’s supposed to bring something different to the table than their competitors.

Where we ship

Film Clips. Once you’ve finished developing your film, it will be wet and needs to dry. These clips are made specifically for holding film. Even though the cost is significantly more than the Ilford / Paterson film developing kit, we think the upgrades included still make it a fair price. Here’s what we like most about the Cinestill / JOBO Duo: There are both liquid and power developers available, as well as “solvent” (fine-grain) and “non-solvent” (high-acutance) developers. There are minimal differences between liquid and powder; powder can be stored for longer periods and you can mix only part of the chemistry together for only as much developer as required. Deciding on which developer you use is largely a matter of personal taste and dependent on what you want out of your photographs. FREE APP. No more complicated scanners, paid subscriptions or expensive development services. With the KLIM Film Scanner app you have your own development service at home to digitize your film and slides with free to use apps. We include an easy-to-follow manual with detailed instructions on how to use our film scanning app. Fixer: This product fixes the image in the film, so it’s important to have the right concentration. Again, it’s just a matter of following the instructions.

Minimal developing chemicals. While it makes sense to include a small portion of chemicals for beginners, we wish that this kit could develop more than two rolls of 35mm film. Most films have an ‘expiration date’ of two years. However in general they long outlast this prediction. If you have a completely dark room that’s great. If not, you can use a changing bag. This is a lightproof bag with sleeves. There are a few safety precautions you need to take before starting this development process. Ensure that you wear rubber gloves at all times, and that you’re carrying out the developing in a well-ventilated area. If you feel faint, dizzy or otherwise unwell, make sure to take a break or leave the room. The liquids used in these photographs are for demonstrative purposes, but you should always make sure to use rubber gloves when handling potentially hazardous chemicals. Working solutions of developer and fixer for one roll of 35mm film. Easy to install. Just install the setting on the lens and insert the film/slide holder into the front end, you can take negative films and slides continuously, directly restore the negative film to digital photos, and realize the digitization of the negative film. The angle of view and tilt can be adjusted by using the view angle adjustment ring on the barrel. Enlarge your negatives optically in a darkroom using an enlarger. For this process, you’ll need access to a darkroom or a light-tight room at home, as well as photographic paper and photo paper developing materials from which to make prints from your negatives.

Spent Fixer will contain residual silver from the film processing, which should not be just dumped down the drain due to the negative effects it can have on the environment. Fixer should always go through a silver recovery process at a licensed location. Look into where Fixer can be disposed of safely in your area; your nearest waste disposal facility may have a place for chemical waste with metals, and some areas have local darkroom labs or photography supply stores that offer disposal for a fee. Next Steps for Your Self-Developed Film Now all that’s left to do is the final wash, by placing the developing tank underneath the tap. Rinse the tank for a couple of minutes, before opening the lid and rinsing the film directly. After this is done, you can finally view the contents within! If everything has gone well, you should have a roll of perfectly exposed negatives. This is because it’s the easiest one to do at home. All you need is a place with running water. At home, this usually means the kitchen or the bathroom. Product Reliability: How sturdy and durable an 35Mm Film Developing Kit is should be an indication of how long it will work out for you. Developing tank – This is a light-tight container that won’t allow any light in while you develop your film. You can use single reel tanks to develop one film at a time, or a bigger tank to load multiple reels into it.

Develop your 35mm film with Analogue Wonderland

If you don’t know how to develop 35mm film (or any type of film for that matter) read this section carefully. Minimal measuring of chemicals. The Ilford Simplicity chemicals are easier to use than standard chemicals because they are pre measured. Next, place the tank (with film, center, lid, and agitator included), film, scissors and bottle opener inside the changing bag and ensure that it is fully zipped up and closed. Place your arms inside the designated holes in the changing bag so that at least your arms up to your elbows are within and ensure that there’s no space for light to seep in. You want to make sure that the tank is light-tight during the entire film developing process.

Next, we need to pour the required amount of fixer into the tank to remove the silver halide crystals from the film, or fix the image. Fixer is much less temperature- and time-sensitive than developer, and will prove usable at most temperatures from roughly 10°C/50°F through to 30°C/86°F. For example, Ilford Rapid Fixer recommends a fixing time between 2-5 minutes, though I’ve rarely used below five. Pouring the fixer into the tank.Film squeegee. Not completely necessary, but helpful in the process of drying your negatives. There are specific models intended just for drying film. We have a full suite of high-end developing equipment to ensure your film gets the best possible treatment at each stage of the developing process I've been wanting to home-develop for some time, but the list of kit 'needs' seemed a but wooly. Someone suggested this kit and it's the perfect* starting point. I'd been most worried about chemical measurements, so having the 3 identical graduated measuring cylinders and the pre-weighed chemicals that all make up 600mls was such a simple way to start.
