About this deal

This renders it capable of grinding espresso, but removing the hopper to make adjustments is undeniably annoying. REDUCED GRIND NOISEFrom high-quality materials to ditching the noisy gearbox, Ode was designed with quietness in mind. The Fellow Opus has a stainless steel 6-blade 40-mm conical burr set, a good-quality option at this price point. There are 41 grind settings, from espresso to cold brew and French press. In our particle size tests, this ranged from 400 to 1500 microns with good uniformity throughout.

Smart Speed PID motor – Exposing every bean to the same force and burr speed to improve particle consistency. Engadget broke the news on Thursday that next month Fellow will be debuting a new coffee grinder called the Opus. For the past few years, Fellow has offered the Ode Brew grinder, one of the best in the industry. Both generations of that grinder use professional-grade flat burrs, with the Ode Gen 2 boasting improved burrs that can grind finer — but not fine enough for espresso, arguably the biggest strike against the machine. You just need to weigh your beans and pour them into the hopper, place the grounds bin in the base and touch the start button. Then, the Fellow Ode takes care of the rest. Magnetically aligned grind catcher – Have the grinds catcher in place every time for an effortless, mess-free (as possible) grinding experience. Fellow Opus has a lot going for it — attractive design, premium look, and numerous grinding settings. However, you must make some compromises — the build is completely plastic, and the grind adjustments are somewhat difficult. Still, if you want to grind for different brew methods on a budget, this is one of the best grinders you can go for. Also, this is a no-tool calibration grinder, which is where all the settings come in handy. As you use the grinder for years and notice the grounds are getting coarser, you can set the inner ring one or two notches finer and have perfect calibration once again. Flavor Profile and Use Cases

It’s pretty expensive. If you’ve got a tight budget for your coffee grinder, it will likely not fit into it.The 41 grind settings from espresso to cold brew coffee necessarily have large steps between them – too large to dial in an espresso. An entry-level user might be satisfied, but a serious coffee lover needs more precision. Many elements make a great-tasting cup of coffee, but freshly ground beans are one of the most important. Therefore, if you have a good burr grinder, you’ll be part of the way to a better-tasting beverage because you can grind your beans immediately before brewing. The Fellow Ode doesn’t have a zero setting. However, the burrs will touch around the number one setting when new. Meanwhile, it’ll take about 5kg of coffee for this to wear off. The burrs and a powerful motor produce excellent grind quality (well above Opus’ price point). The Fellow says it’s best for medium roast coffee beans, but it handles light roast without any struggle at fine settings. Switching things up from the 64mm flat burrs of Fellow's Ode Gen 2 grinder, the Opus uses a six-blade 40mm conical burr setup that Fellow calls "C6-40 Burly Burrs." Conical burrs aren't necessarily better or worse than flat burrs, but they are cheaper to manufacture (more on that later).

Given the fact that the Opus is meant to accommodate espresso, Fellow should really just design a portafilter holder. The flipping method sounds a little crazy, and it's often annoying to do, even once you got the hang of it. It's an extra, arguably unnecessary, step that could be bypassed by the designers there. They're clearly capable of creative industrial design, so why not flex those muscles on extras, which I know espresso drinkers would happily splurge for. Nevertheless, café sized flat burrs aren’t necessarily ideal for domestic coffee grinding. That’s because a more powerful motor with a higher RPM is often needed, which creates more heat and noise while grinding. Of course, this isn’t usually a problem in a commercial setting, but it’s not ideal for the home.
