About this deal

Lance Abrams, John Burke, Joseph Cattery, Paul Garrison, D B Graham, Travis Greenspan, Evie Hydelburg, Wendy McMahon, Cherie Quinz, Cate Simpson, Hilly Simpson, Macie Snyder, Amie Stewart, Gwen Talbert, Brenden Wang, Katrina and 68 unnamed victims. Harry Bosch and the Lincoln Lawyer team up to exonerate a woman who’s already served five years for killing her ex-husband. I want to say it was a fun, easy crime read but even the space of several years didn't stop this from feeling formulaic: Eve Dallas has become a collection of quirks in a grumpy but pretty police costume. McNab is still a bundle of brightly coloured energy. Peabody, in spite of being by now a senior and experienced detective, still seems to treat every pronouncement from Eve as if from on high. Roarke is still master of the business world with seemingly endless time to help his grumpy, workaholic wife. Robb, J.D. "FAQ". J.D.ROBB. When will Eve and Roarke have a baby? Nora has said repeatedly that a baby would signal the end of the series. In her opinion, a baby changes everything (for the better) and the focus of the series would change radically. In no way does this mean Nora thinks a mother can't be an excellent police officer (or attorney or any other type of professional). It does mean that many of the things readers love about Eve and Roarke's life together would change (i.e., leaving home for hours on end only to return to continue working in their home offices). Ali, Kecia, Human in Death: Morality and Mortality in J. D. Robb's Novels (Waco, Texas: Baylor University Press, 2017). ISBN 9781481306270

After fifty six books Robb is still finding new ways and new places for her characters to die. I really admire her creativity. Of course she bases all the action around her established team of Eve and Roarke and friends who are probably the real reason most of us keep on reading the books! Even with fifth sixty books in the series, J.D. Robb shows no signs of stopping with the In Death series. In ENCORE IN DEATH, a well-known man dies of cyanide poisoning. I can’t recall the last time a victim died due to poisoning in this series so it was a welcome notion. As you can expect, Robb weaves an intricate storyline that kept me on my toes.

Like a recipe with salt sprinkled on instead of cooked in.... its not bad, but its missing something in terms of smoothness and flow. Because Naked in Death was somewhat popular, seven other books of the In Death series were spawned. The story of Eve Dallas was well worth the read—and worth telling across various other books. Not only does Eve Dallas have a fierce, fierce heart, she also has strength and the utmost integrity. Her increasingly mushrooming relationship with Roarke, a man of mystifying fellow, is also a big talking point. Naked in Death centered on an NYPD Lieutenant by the name Eve Dallas. The story of this book takes place in the year 2058—not too distant a future—in NYC. a b c Robb, J.D. (2005). "Chapter Thirteen". Survivor in Death. Penguin Publishing Group. ISBN 9781101205006. In 2036, the poisoning of a beloved actor at a swanky party celebrating his actress wife has Lt. Eve Dallas and Det. Delia Peabody scouting around for those who might not have considered him quite so beloved.

Another detective from Homicide. Baxter enjoys teasing Eve about anything he can, usually relating to her relationship with Roarke and associated changes; despite this teasing Roarke views Baxter as a solid cop and easygoing person. The quality of the writing is still great, still very visual; but the characters have stopped resonating... I suppose its fair to say that this series and this author isn't relatable anymore. Mira is the resident psychiatrist and profiler for the NYPSD. She has several children with her husband, Dennis, and has grandchildren as well. She is a pretty and feminine woman whom Eve often consults on her cases. Eve loves Charlotte very much but has not admitted it to her face; nevertheless, Charlotte knows. Charlotte thinks of Eve as a daughter, a fact which annoyed Mira's own daughter at one point, and throughout the series has gotten Eve to open up to her more and more. McNabb, Morris, Reo, Summerset, etc. are all here. We had Nadine at three points in the book, I mostly skipped over her. She's another one I wouldn't be sad at having a reduced role in the books. She's still somehow a super journalist with her own t.v. show and also is writing Oscar winning screenplays and oh yeah books. I cannot.

a b c Robb, J.D. (2000). "Chapter Twenty". Judgment in Death. Penguin Publishing Group. ISBN 9781101203798. Blurb and author’s link to chapter 1:⏰ It was a glittering event full of A-listers, hosted by Eliza Lane and Brant Fitzhugh, a celebrity couple who’d conquered both Hollywood and Broadway. And now Eve Dallas has made her entrance—but not as a guest. After raising a toast, Fitzhugh fell to the floor and died, with physical symptoms pointing to cyanide, and the police have crashed the party. He is perfect. Eve – perfect? To me she is – some might find her a little bit brash and unapproachable, she finds it hard to make friends, she is not a fan of socialising or fashion (as I said, she is perfect to me). But once she earns your trust she is a friend for life.

In Encore in Death Eve and Roarke are still in a happy place with lots of love and humour and no cross words. Galahad gets lots of treats. Peabody is still in heaven as she designs her new home. All is right with the world apart from that dratted candy thief who defeats all of Eve's attempts at hiding her chocolate bars.If investigators everywhere used their "instincts" like that, God help the innocents who get caught in the cross-fire. Eve and Roarke, Roarke and Eve – who is my favourite - hard to say – I want to be Eve and I want to be married to Roarke … It hardly matters if it is Nora Roberts you are reading or if it is J.D. Robb. You will be delighted. You will enjoy your romantic suspense married with crime and mystery regardless. The In Death book series takes you into the near future and stimulates all your emotions with aplomb like only J.D. Robb can. she studied the pond and the purity of the floating white lilies. Tangled roots down there, she bet; you just had to look under the surface. The J.D. Robb nom de plume was created out of necessity and a willingness to give readers something different than what they had already seen from Nora Roberts. Nora Roberts’ books were approaching a century in 1995 (when Naked in Death debuted). There was a need to do something different. She had written tons of books and even had an excess of titles and was still writing more. Readers had already associated Nora Roberts with one style of romantic suspense. J.D Robb was going to give them another style of romantic suspense and to the casual fans (who didn’t look at the author’s photo for some reason), she would be another hot, new author. J.D. was derived from Jason and Dan, Ms. Robert’s sons, while Robb is just a short form of her name.

As the title suggests the setting for this book is the theatre and its players, and the initial murder is at an A-lister party. A famous actor raises a glass of champagne as a toast to his wife, takes a sip and crashes to the ground. Death by cyanide poisoning but who could have done it? I had a very strong gut feeling which eventually proved to be correct. I think I read too much crime fiction. Celebrity couple Eliza Lane and Brant Fitzhugh throw a party on the night before Brant is scheduled to leave for New Zealand. He is producing and starring in a movie being filmed there while Eliza is set for the role of a lifetime on Broadway. Eve Dallas arrives after Brant toasted Eliza, fell to the floor, and died. The drink that killed him was originally intended for Eliza. Which of them was the target? With over 200 guests, staff, and servers, it’s not going to be easy to identify the killer.

About the Author

I enjoyed the way Robb was able to keep me in the dark for most of the novel before revealing the identity of the killer. Not only was this perfectly executed but the ideas in her stories as well as her characters remain fresh and unique. This book is the straw that breaks my personal value for money equation - the reason I stop reading JD Robb, 20 years after I started, with "Seduction in death" in 2002. It seems like the author wrote herself into a dead-end, then used the investigators "instinct" to force fit another central character into the role of the killer and finally edited in a bunch of cues and clues in the first chapter to tie it together. There's a deliberation about the writing in the first chapter leading upto the murder and Eve's introduction, it looks like it was "bolted on" with thinly buried clues, purely to substantiate the eventual killer.
