About this deal

He had to have a prop in front of him or people who were dressed as various characters in the Dan Dare comic strip. Sometimes he would photograph them and work from the photographs but always in a very careful, meticulous way. In 2016 we did an exhibition of Japanese comics for girls – shōjo manga – and that was one of the most popular exhibitions we’ve ever had – and it’s Dan Dare and The Eagle that gave us the springboard to do it. Eagle managed to avoid the problems caused by the countrywide paper shortage, by absorbing the quotas of other publications. [31] Julian: The boards for the planets, you mean? Not specifically, they were just big sheets of mounting board that were pliable enough to get a nicer bend on them. I usually wedged the board between two buffers to force the bend.

LewStringer's 'New'Blog (started 1stMarch 2013): Is about himself and details the comic work he is currently doing and has done since the early 1980's. In 2007–2008 Virgin Comics published a 7-issue Dan Dare mini-series written by Garth Ennis, with art by Gary Erskine. [9] Virgin's founder and chairman Richard Branson is a fan of the character. [10] The series is set several years after the original strips. Space Fleet has collapsed along with the UN due to nuclear war between China and America; Britain survived due to defensive shields made by Professor Peabody, and has become a world power again as a result, with the Royal Navy taking Space Fleet's role. Peabody is the Home Secretary to a prime minister modelled on Tony Blair, who has sold Earth's defence out to The Mekon out of fear of overwhelming odds. Dare, assisted by Digby (who sacrifices himself in battle) leads a spirited defence of both Earth and his honourable principles. The original strip, featuring the original characters of the 1950s Eagle, was revived in 1989, with artist Keith Watson providing the artwork for the initial run of stories. Watson had been part of the Dan Dare team from 1958 to 1960 and was sole artist on Dan Dare from 1962 to 1967. The artwork for the final stories was provided by David Pugh. The new Eagle ended in 1994. The Mekon, super-intelligent ruler of the Treens, was Dan's archenemy. He escaped at the end of each story to return with an even more inventive scheme for the conquest of Earth.Julian’s models, as seen in “Dan Dare” in Eagle in 1983, inserted into a strip drawn by Ian Kennedy Bellamy then went on to draw two of his most celebrated strips, Fraser of Africa and Heros the Spartan. He also drew Montgomery of Alamein (the life of Field Marshal Bernard Law Montgomery) and did some work for Look and Learn. John Freeman. "Dan Dare Remembered". Down The Tubes. The Dan Dare Corporation owns the global rights including Film, Television, Radio, Social Media, Publishing and Merchandising to the Eagle Comic and associated strips including Dan Dare - Pilot of the Future. Julian: It disappoints me that you do not have it. It cannot be helped – happens all the time, I guess. It would only have gone to the council tip; probably buried in landfill right now. I think it was the way in which he did it that was important, his style of drawing the strip was absolutely key; you get these really vertiginous angles and strange points of view that give you a sense of being right there in amongst the action so that you feel like you’re a part of it. Characters inspired by or based on Dan Dare have appeared throughout British popular culture. One example is Wing Commander Leyton in British Summertime by Paul Cornell, which juxtaposes the utopian future portrayed in the original comics with the Britain of today.
