About this deal

Some view white as a safe option, but for many it’s the go-to paint colour when decorating a room. White can make rooms appear spacious and bright, but get it wrong and they can feel clinical and stark.

I do not know the final look of everything else yet - eg we will be getting a new sofa at some point but cannot afford to do for at least another 6months/a year - we want to live with the old one for a bit before changing to see what chair/sofa mix will suit the space best. Ditto curtains in some rooms - we will replace some but will have to wait. I would prefer to choose the sofa I want rather than be restricted by a strong wall colour We used Crown Brilliant White in our summer house and, thanks to the fact that the room is bathed in light for much of the day, it’s bright and crisp rather than feeling like you’re hanging out in an asylum. Off WhiteAaron at Coat Paints adds, 'Water-based emulsion will work just fine on the ceiling and it’s the default choice - but how about this. Choose a white Soft Sheen emulsion paint for the ceiling which has a subtle shine to it and can be really effective at bouncing light around the room. It’s not for everyone, but it can look super effective especially in low lit spaces or at night with lamps.'

The best white paint for your walls will depend both on your natural preference toward warm or cool tones, and the aspect of the room you're painting - so whether the windows face north, south, east or west. Marianne Shillingford, Creative Director at Dulux explains, 'It’s easy to understand why it can be so difficult to choose just the right white for your walls when there is so much choice.'Am I likely to be able to find a fresh-looking white or off-white to suit the whole area that won’t look dodgy in certain areas at certain times of day? I should mention that the kitchen units will be pale grey and worktops white…. I don’t have any snaps of two of the most recently decorated areas in my house but if you’re after a hard-wearing mellow, creamy white (without a yellow tinge) then you could consider Dulux Timeless. This colour has been around for yonks and was apparently one of Dulux’s best selling shades for a while. James has recently used the Endurance version to cover our hall, stairs and landing and I’m loving the results. It’s a dark area with very little natural light but Timeless has warmed it up a treat as the colour seems to reflect the oak doors and skirtings around it. I am wary of doing anything too "on trend" at the moment as we are not frequent decorators - want it too not look dated in 2 years time! To get the best from a crisp white paint you need to put in a bit of prep. Charlotte Cosby, Head of Creative at Farrow & Ball, recommends applying a primer and undercoat to make the finish long-lasting and to fill in any small defects. If you're concerned that these extras will bump up the budget too much, then it can be useful to see what relevant home decor discount codes are currently live. When choosing a white, always try and get a feel for its undertones, particularly when using with another colour' says Dominic Myland, CEO of Mylands. 'A clean white such as our Pure White No. 1 consists of white pigment only, so it is wonderfully uncomplicated to use. When used overall in the space, it will give a very peaceful feel – a visual palette cleanser – or it can complement any colour on the spectrum.'

For a modern look, you can also move away from the traditional white ceiling altogether and paint the ceiling a statement colour – this could be the same as the walls for a really cohesive feel, or a different tone.' Downstairs I will be sanding and varnishing the original parquet (in pic) and up the stairs and in the hall upstairs I will be having a grey carpet running which I've shown a photo of and I'm not sure whether it goes with the Almond White. I think it goes a bit better with shadow white but probably should be ok with the Almond. The Almond probably goes better with the parquet than the Shadow White. Smoked Oak floor (quarry tiles in utility and porch). So everything 'new' but we are trying to keep some original features - found the original doors/spindles under 1960's veneer. For reasons of hygiene and safety, personal grooming products, cosmetics or items of intimate clothing cannot be returned. Cathryn Sanders at Earthborn says, 'Whites and off-whites can vary significantly depending on their undertone, with different types of natural and electrical lights impacting greatly on the perceived colour.'Probably the most well-known white is Pure Brilliant White, a staple of new homes everywhere on the planet,' Marianne goes on to say. 'Pure Brilliant White contains optical brighteners which make it reflect more light and so it’s perfect when you want a super bright white as a blank canvas for your walls and ceiling.' Our Colour Scales collection provides a wonderful solution for creating a light fresh design scheme that gives the illusion of space, ‘Masquerade’ works beautifully alongside ‘Masquerade Mid’ and ‘Masquerade Light’ to create an elegant and welcoming scheme in a small space.' Am facing the dilemma of wanting to decorate the whole of our ground floor in the same colour, so incorporating a kitchen/dining space, north east facing with lots of light (big window in kitchen and 3m wide bi-folds in the dining area), then also a living room which faces S/SW with floor to ceiling windows, and relatively large entrance hall area – S/SW facing but no windows, just a front door with some stained glass in it.

Flora Hogg, at Craig & Rose adds, 'When swatching whites, use a pure white as a point of reference to see the true undertone of other white. However, be mindful they can seem dramatic as first due to the contrast but trust the process. Once applied, you will still recognise it as white, but you’ll also notice how it transforms and adapts with the light throughout the day.' This lounge just cries out for an update of airy white on those ugly, dull peach walls! But which shade of Dulux white would be be be fine, without the white being too stark or too yellow or too bluish grey??? Brilliant white, or almond white?? Timeless white, or chiffon white?? Very confused lady in a decor dilemma here. Hi All, I've got the decorators in to decorate my hallway and after some deliberation decided on Dulux Almond White which is a lovely warm creamy colour. At the 11th hour I came across a tester I had from previously of F&B Shadow White but in the light I wasn't sure if it was too dark/grey (I'm not a big fan of pure grey - I do like grieve). So the decorators having already started I was under pressure and chose Almond White and the hall has now been painted - not quite finished yet - but I'm wondering if I made the wrong choice. Almond White is a lovely light warm creamy colour- totally inoffensive- no peach of magnolia but I'm wondering whether it's a bit bland and boring. The Shadow White might be a classier more elegant number- but I don't want it to be too dark or grey. Help! I will have to tell the decorators when they arrive tomorrow morning to repaint if necessary!

Consequently, if you want to achieve the appearance of true white in a south-facing room, it's best to err on the side of cooler tones which will balance out the warmth of the natural light.
