About this deal

Hearing protection is important and does have its place. If I am going to venues where I believe noise level could become loud then I have my earplugs with me. Night clubs, parties etc. I would always use them at the cinema although I haven’t been to one in years. Reading some of the posts on this forum people say those places can be very loud.

But a pipe like this doesn't transmit sound perfectly, so the output isn't the same as the input. "It's similar, but the natural resonances of the pipe will amplify sound at some frequencies and attenuate sound at other frequencies," Davies says. The pipe acts as an acoustic filter, which is the basis for wind musical instruments, and the thinking behind earplugs that claim to attenuate different sounds and frequencies. So, how effective are the different pipe designs inside each of the earplugs? I asked Davies to comment on them, as well as Jérémie Voix, a professor at École de Technologie Supérieure in Montreal who leads the NSERC-EERS Industrial Research Chair in In-Ear Technologies (CRITIAS).

Do Ear Defenders Block Out All Sound?

If you’re looking for ear defenders for an autistic child, we’ve covered this topic in more detail here. Best Ear Defenders for Kids (UK) – 6+ months

Low frequencies should actually be attenuated because often they are detrimental to your hearing and your intelligibility of speech,” Jérémie Voix says this is called low-frequency energetic masking. He explains that if you’re on the tube or metro and you’re having a conversation, it’s the low frequency that’s masking your speech. Flare Audio's Calmer earplugs don’t look like regular earplugs. They’re small, made of soft silicone and have a big hole in the middle. There are specific instructions about how to fit these – they need to go into your ear canal at a certain angle – but they’re easy to follow, and this is a crucial step considering they work by ever-so-slightly changing the way your ear works. Fabulous 50-hour battery life so you can explore the world without fear of losing your noise protection.Ear defenders can be a visual sign that your child is ‘different’, so you will want to make sure that your child feels happy wearing them in school and isn’t receiving negative attention as a result. How to Choose Ear Defenders for Autism Flare Calmer earplug alternatives are a groundbreaking innovation designed specifically for people with sound sensitivities — that’s us! By promoting a sense of calm and reducing sensory distractions, Flare Calmer earplugs empower neurodivergent people to navigate our world more comfortably.

There is much discussion on this in the medical field from experts saying that the overuse of hearing protection isn’t good and therefore discouraged as it will lower loudness threshold and I completely agree with this. I think if one isn’t careful they can become paranoid over sound making their hyperacusis and tinnitus worse and I don’t think it’s healthy. It’s generally not advised to use ear defenders on babies under the age of 3 months as their skulls are still quite soft. Many people on the Autism spectrum can struggle with sensory overload, where certain sights, sounds and smells can become too much to process. Both adults and kids are recommended to wear ear protection in environments where the noise is 90 decibels or above. It’s important to note that the SNR rating applies to loud sounds only – quieter sounds won’t be reduced in volume by as much as the SNR rating. I believe the answer is to seek proper treatment. If TRT is unavailable then start using a sound machine by the bedside at night for sound enrichment. This usually helps to desensitise the auditory system. Try going out for long walks and getting used to everyday sounds instead of keeping away from them by staying at home. I don’t normally recommend anyone to use white noise generators unless they are under the care of a hearing therapist. However, if your tinnitus is under control and you have habituated but experience hyperacusis, that some call: Reactive tinnitus. Then white noise generators could be the way to go. Two should be used to keep the auditory system in balance and set the volume level low, preferably below the tinnitus. This will help to desensitise the auditory system and treat the hypercusis. Prevention is better than cure, so you should take action to protect your kids’ hearing now rather than letting them damage their hearing at an early age.

Sometimes a school will provide autistic children with ear defenders. It’s important to realise that not all autistic kids need ear defenders in school, so you don’t want your child to be pressured into wearing them if they aren’t necessary. They include multiple microphones to pinpoint and amplify your voice, which means your voice will be clear and easy to understand when you make calls and video chat. If you’re an adult who’d like a discrete pair of ear defenders that look just like headphones, the Mpow Ear Defenders could be a good choice. They are also useful for children with autism and sensory needs who may be sensitive to certain noises. They work to deflect and absorb the energy from sounds in the air. Some ear defenders for children are suitable for babies and toddlers, while others are only suitable for older children over the age of 5. However, Davies warns that the placebo effect might be at work in some cases, and believes all of these products need more sound attenuation tests to a recognised standard from a reputable lab. If you are buying ear defenders for a child you should buy a pair that is designed for children as an adult pair might be too big. What we need is more research about the complex relationship between sound exposure and health outcomes, which is what Danielle Benesch, a Master's student working alongside Jérémie Voix at the École de Technologie Supérieure in Montreal, is interested in finding out. Edz Kidz also provide an adult version of the ear defenders, in yellow and red, and would be ideal for both autistic adults and parents of autistic children who want to reassure their child that adults wear can wear them too.
