About this deal

The #1 New York Times bestselling author presents a gripping new thriller that pits homicide detective Eve Dallas against a conspiracy of exploitation and evil… If you enjoy engaging near-future police procedurals, then I recommend this series. This is the fifty-fifth book in the In Death Eve Dallas series and I have read all of them up to this point. Overall, this novel was heartwrenching as well as darker and grittier than usual. I was desperate for Eve and her team to capture the evil perpetrators. This was a disturbing book, but one that is well worth reading. I can’t wait to read the next book in the series. Unfortunately, they didnt get away fast enough. Now Dorian is injured, terrified, and wandering the streets of New York, and Mina lies dead near the waterfront while Lt. Eve Dallas looks over the scene.

Eve Dallas turns to the department’s top profiler, who confirms what seems obvious to Eve: They’re dealing with a killer whose childhood involved some sort of trauma—a situation Eve is all too familiar with herself. Yet the clues suggest a perpetrator who’d be roughly sixty years old, and there are no records of old crimes with a similar MO. What was the trigger that apparently reopened such an old wound and sent someone over the edge? Many thanks to St. Martin's Press and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion. Well, it was a decent read. My problem with this series is that it's become to repetitive for me. Almost formulaic. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own and are not biased in any way. Publication date was February 8, 2022. This review was originally posted at Mystery and Suspense Magazine. Oh, and Dallas usually has to catch a runaway criminal in the cop central. I think this is the first book hat hasn't happened with in a while. I could be wrong. It was a glittering event full of A-listers, hosted by Eliza Lane and Brant Fitzhugh, a celebrity couple who’d conquered both Hollywood and Broadway. And now Eve Dallas has made her entrance—but not as a guest. After raising a toast, Fitzhugh fell to the floor and died, with physical symptoms pointing to cyanide, and the police have crashed the party. When a friend of Eve offers to set up a meeting with Dorian, Eve and Roarke jump at the opportunity to get more information. They learn about a nefarious place known as the Pleasure Academy, where girls are groomed for the sex trade. But it won’t be easy to take down this highly complex and sophisticated organization and free the innocent victims still being held there. The procedurals in this story were complicated and involved so many variables it was tougher to keep up. Since the setting is 2061, it was interesting that the era of focus was nearer our own this time or one where I was familiar, somewhere around 2003 - 2009. The reaction to some of our fashion choices was pretty funny and nostalgic. Because the case involved missing women, I became much more attached to the victims than I normally do, silently rooting for the team to find them as we were getting the point of view of one of the abducted women. Also, the format included a new aspect, a “before” and “now” point of view from characters critical to the story. While it was initially strange, I came to love it, looking forward to the next one. I found that book was well written, but perhaps not her most exciting. I took two long days to read it (both times), when usually I would not be able to put it down. The usual interactions between the characters were missing. No insults with Sommerset, no twitching eyelid when Peabody teased Eve about her sex life with McNab. Everything seemed smooth, no bumps with the regular characters. This 54th book in J. D. Robb's amazing series was a one-sitting read from start to finish. Impossible to put down, especially when the feeling of working alongside Eve as she connected the past with the present events. The sense of urgency never once let up.

There may have been others but sometimes in the audio the detail slips by. I don’t mention Sebastian since he made his appearance in an earlier book.

As a longtime fan of this series, it seems to me that the stories are becoming a bit less edgy and the characters a bit more mellow than in years past. That's not to say either is any less appealing, though - they're still set in the future (this one in 2061) amid all the fun gizmos like meals programmed into a machine and vehicles that can land and take off vertically, calls for homicide detective Eve Dallas to draw on childhood experiences to help solve a couple of murders and prevent another - not pleasant recollections given what she was forced to endure. As always, Eve Dallas is an indomitable force for justice. She brings her skills, talents, intelligence and even her own painful experiences to every investigation. This time, she is especially tested due to her personal history. However, she has the strength, smarts, support of her colleagues and love of her husband to get her through, and she never loses sight of her goal, no matter how tough a case is for her. This remarkable series grows stronger and stronger with each book. This is the 55th book, and the setting has progressed three years. Eve and Roarke are going strong and, as has been done in the past more than once, he is more than helpful as Eve tries to learn who is abducting these young people and to bring them to justice. The next book in JD Robb’s In Death series after Abandoned In Death is Desperation In Death which was released on September 6 2022. How many J.D. Robb In Death series books are there? The #1 New York Timesbestselling author presents a gripping new thriller that pits homicide detective Eve Dallas against a conspiracy of exploitation and evil…

All in all the Desperation is an excellent and a fast paced story. I’m doing my best to pace myself on the read so I can enjoy it longer. As soon as I finish, I know February will seem a long way off! Thanks to Nora for the enjoyment. Reading the newest J.D. Robb book always feels like a chance to catch up with dear friends, while said friends are trying to save the world. And I don’t know that I’ll ever tire of that. Desperation in Death is the 55th full-length installment in the In Death series, and I’m still just as attached to Eve and Roarke and Peabody and the rest as I could ever hope to be. I absolutely love seeing how they’ve grown and changed over the years. While this particular installment dealt with some incredibly difficult and heartbreaking topics, and was very hard to read in some places, it was handled with care and was well worth reading. From the beginning, things just don’t add up for Eve. This child had to have been well cared for, but she’s been missing for several months. Her hair is perfectly styled with expensive products – even her nails are perfectly manicured. But then, there is the sexy undergarments. Why would this young girl be wearing expensive silk underthings? When Eve identifies the girl as Mina Rose Cabot, a child missing from Devon, Pennsylvania – a child who was much loved – Eve knows she isn’t just looking for a murderer – she’s looking for a child abductor. There is a second set of bloodstains on Mina, and they belong to Dorian Gregg, a runaway from Freehold, New Jersey. Is Dorian lying dead somewhere and just hasn’t been found yet? Is she injured? Was she recaptured? Or, is she the one who took Mina’s life? No, there are not currently any movies based on J.D. Robb In Death series. What is the latest J.D. Robb In Death series? New York, 2061: The place called the Pleasure Academy is a living nightmare where abducted girls are trapped, trained for a life of abject service while their souls are slowly but surely destroyed. Dorian, a thirteen-year-old runaway who’d been imprisoned there, might never have made it out if not for her fellow inmate Mina, who’d hatched the escape plan. Mina was the more daring of the two—but they’d been equally desperate. The murders and scenarios bring up some bad memories for Eve and, as usual, these are dealt with in a sympathetic manner - we feel her pain, her sadness but Roarke is always on hand to take care of 'his cop'. ❤️ A tasty, if not always tasteful, tale of supernatural mayhem that fans of King and Crichton alike will enjoy.

In the early morning hours, Lieutenant Eve Dallas is called to the scene of a murder. The victim is twenty-six-year-old Lauren Elder. Lauren is lovely, well-liked at work, and well-loved by friends and family. Who could have done this to Lauren? Who would meticulously dress and stage Lauren’s body and then leave her in a children’s playground with a crayon sign saying ‘Bad Mommy’? Lauren had been reported missing ten days ago – where had she been all of that time? Abandoned in Death is the 54th in the In Death series by J.D. Robb and another brilliant, hugely entertaining episode in this series which I hope never ends! I don’t know how the author does it, but each episode is fresh and new. Catching up with the characters each time is like catching up with family. I highly recommend this series, but my advice is – start at the beginning 😊This time it’s a body strategically placed on a bench at a children’s playground. NYPSD Lieutenant Eve Dallas and her team examine the scene and aside from being disturbed by the murder and location, they notice how the victim is obsessively clean and perfectly made up. But, her clothes are of a much earlier era’s styling and there’s a sign next to her saying “Bad Mommy.” Even without the highly skilled profiler Charlotte Mira’s assessment, they understand they’re dealing with a killer who has mommy issues. As they begin their investigation, they deduce that there are other missing women who match the profile of their victim. It becomes a race against time to find these women before they transition from good mommy to bad. I cannot recommend this book highly enough. I believe it is one of my favorites of the series and I am quite sure it is one I’ll read again and again. If you enjoy engaging near-future police procedurals with some romance and humor, then I recommend this series. This is the fifty-third book in the In Death Eve Dallas series and I have read all of them up to this point. Overall, it is entertaining, and over time, it is like spending time with old friends. I can’t wait to read the next book in the series. The setting is New New York in 2061. We still get some technology that would make my eyes bleed if I thought about it too much, but it works.
