Lorraine Ashbourne as Barbara Castle, Minister for Overseas Development; later Secretary of State for Transport and Secretary of State for Employment [25] David Wilmot as Arthur Scargill, president of the Yorkshire branch of the National Union of Mineworkers [25] Charles trains at Dartmouth. Lord Mountbatten and Elizabeth succeed in stopping the relationship between Charles and Camilla – Charles is posted overseas in the Caribbean for eight months. After the Queen Mother talks to the parents of Parker Bowles and Camilla, they get married. The Queen hears from Anne about her affair with Parker Bowles and her belief that Camilla is destined for him, not Charles. At the start of the episode, Prince Philip is watching the astronauts talk on television while wearing blue and dull green. The queen (also in green) comes in to join him and mentions that she’s sending a message to the moon, which will be inscribed with other messages on a disc and left on the moon along with an olive branch “for the little green men to wave about.” I haven’t noticed much of a color story in this episode, but I do love that they’re both wearing some sort of green while she’s joking about the “little green men.” The two sit down in a deep discussion about science and religion, the need for more mysteries to be solved so that there is less need for a god to provide answers. But Prince Philip feels "action" is the only thing that will help men make a mark like astronauts who achieve something so remarkable. A still from 'The Crown' Season 3 Episode 7 — 'Moondust'. (Netflix)Nerves aside, he clearly had the royal family's vote of confidence, as Robin was soon charged with overseeing the creation of a resting place and memorial for the Queen's father, George VI. The structure, which became known as the King George VI Chantry, was the first structural addition to St. George's Chapel since 1475. Insofar as the church sets itself apart as something categorically different from amusing spectacle, it remains an essential haven for the overstimulated prodigals of pop-culture fatigue. Boring Belief vs. Invigorating Action

According to sources like Peter Wright's 1987 book Spycatcher, which the government attempted to ban upon its publication, Lord Mountbatten met with Cecil King, the head of the International Publishing Corporation and a member of the Bank of England, in 1968 to discuss deposing Wilson and handing the reins of the country to Mountbatten. In Wright's history, Mountbatten dismissed the idea as treason and did not act further. For 17 years King George VI lay in the Royal Vault. It is a haunting thought that the two Queens I met that day will soon be reunited in death. Everything happened within the castle and he would no doubt have greatly preferred this slimmed-down and more modest send-off.

In October 1966, following the Aberfan disaster, Elizabeth decides not to visit the village, despite Wilson's attempts to convince her to go. Philip attends the funeral of the children who died. The public blames the National Coal Board for the disaster before blame shifts toward the government. Hearing suggestions that she is not being sympathetic, Elizabeth confronts Wilson, who says this came from someone in his cabinet. Elizabeth later visits Aberfan, laying flowers on the graves and visiting grieving families. In private, she cries while listening to a recording of the hymn sung at the children's funeral.

One of Robin's best-known accomplishments was the founding of St. George's House with Prince Philip. Opened within the confines of Windsor Castle in 1966 (sadly, the same week of the Aberfan disaster), the House was the product of 5 years of planning to create a space for discussion or both religious and modern secular issues, a project undertaken not just by Robin, but also Prince Philip. He also makes a point of saying how certain he is that the Apollo 11 astronauts are “at one with the world” because they’ve achieved something “spectacular.” Even going so far as to presume that they’re “at one with God — and happy.” When Philip is proved oh so gloriously wrong of that assessment later in the episode, it’s hard not to feel sorry for him. He’s a fanboy, and fanboys (and fangirls) can’t help but put their idols on pedestals. No to the Queen Mother part, yes to the Princess Anne's ex part, maybe to the keeping Camilla away from Prince Charles part. Honestly, this family is a mess. In 1981, Robin and his family were invited to the event of the year: the royal wedding for Prince Charles and Diana. They sat with pride of place and spent the evening of the festivities with the royal family and friends. And then the moon landing day arrives; Philip gathers his family and tells everyone to hush. He is thrilled by the landing, his gaze never leaving the screen. There’s a small moment where The Queen looks at him briefly and smiles. Philip stays up and continues to watch the moon landing and begins crying; I believe at this moment he is so overawed by the sense of achievement that he is compounded by regret.

Charles Edwards as Sir Martin Charteris, Assistant Private Secretary to the Queen; later Private Secretary to the Queen [25] She just arrived and there I was. After what seemed like a long silence, she asked if I was a chapel guide. I had a badge on me saying "Chapel Guide" so she was on to a winner there. And here is another reason why Christian faith endures in a secular age. It embraces suffering, but with hope. It worships a God whose glory is the shame of a bloody cross—a God who can relate to us in our darkest pain, but who conquered the grave. When our tireless strivings fail us, as they inevitably will, Jesus says “Come . . . I will give you rest” (Matt. 11:28). When we reach the end of our rope and our weakness wins, Jesus says, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness” (2 Cor. 12:9).Philip’s critique of church is that he’s not amused by its stale repetition. It’s the same old thing, week after week after week. How boring! Like many others in our secular age, boredom is the starting point for unbelief . And yet as the episode unfolds, we see how the “boring” nature of church is actually an asset. The insatiable hunger for spectacle and fleeting amusement, after all, leaves us lost and cold. Insofar as the church sets itself apart from that rigamarole—as something categorically different from amusing spectacle—it remains an essential haven for the overstimulated prodigals of pop-culture fatigue. Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins and Buzz Aldrin come to meet Philip for a private discussion when he realizes they are simply three little men who are "pale-faced with colds" and calls them as having "total absence of originality and spontaneity." The Queen explains how it is not their fault as they never wanted to be "public figures," and he expresses his dismay in these words: "They delivered as astronauts, but they disappointed as human beings." a b Bentley, Jean (January 24, 2018).
