About this deal

Full of charm, wit and characters that will capture your heart, the series begins with Date With Death. Have you read them all? Date with Mystery– The Dales Detective Agency’s latest assignment appears to be an open and shut case. Hired by a local solicitor to find a death certificate for a young woman who died over twenty years ago, Samson O’Brien is about to find out that things in Bruncliffe are rarely that straightforward. Particularly when the solicitor insists that Delilah Metcalfe, with her wealth of local knowledge, works alongside Samson on this sensitive investigation. Samson and Delilah do not work well with each other, actually she hates him. But with funny circumstances, call it fate, they have to work together. It doesn’t help that both his detective agency and Delilah’s business are lettered the same, ‘DDA’ and in the same building! They will have to put the past behind them if there is to be any business coming their way, and now with suspicious deaths, they embark on different mysteries in every book.

Julia Chapman said: “The passion which Caroline, Sally and the team at Saffron Cherry have brought to this project so far has been amazing and I’m over the moon that Stewart Harcourt is on board for the screenplay. I know Samson, Delilah and the good folk of Bruncliffe have found the best of all possible homes.” I designated it as a semi-cosy as it has darker themes than I expect from the usual gentle cosy. As this was my first experience of this series I have no idea if they are all as dark. The landscape – the gorgeous ondulating landscape draws you in and I loved the characters. There was also a more serious story – one man returning to face his past and his father and everything was nicely and neatly wrapped up – although with just enough threads to leave you wanting more.

Samson politely hears her out, but isn’t certain if this lady is all there. He’s not sure about her story but wants to follow up on it. When a retirement home reports a series of incidents disturbing the peace, the detective starts to think that she may have been telling the truth. I loved Delilah and Samson together, they turn out to be a really good combo – good for each other and their business. Delilah ends up putting a lot into helping Samson and they both solve the mysteries the town brings them. The eighth novel, Date with Evil, will be published by Pan Macmillan in April and author Julia Chapman is in the top one per cent of UK Library authors borrowed. Cozy Case Files Volume 7 (By: Donna Andrews,Diane Kelly,Ellen Crosby,Ellie Alexander,Vivien Chien,Ashley Weaver,Mindy Quigley) I have just reviewed Date With Evil by Julia Chapman as an advanced reader copy thanks to @PanMcMillan and @NetGalley.The Dales Detective series will be developed by Saffron Cherry’s Caroline Roberts-Cherry and head of scripted Jane Langford (Hollyoaks, Metastasis, Jordskott S2, Origin). Saffron Cherry’s creative director, actress and writer Sally Lindsay will serve as executive producer. The adaptation is being written by Stewart Harcourt (Agatha Raisin, Poirot, Maigret). However, as I kept reading I did get more into the swing of the current story and found it a compelling read.

I quite enjoyed the premise of the murdered folk all being from the same dating agency (although I'm sure this has been done before in some way, shape or form in other cosies) as well as the way in which Delilah and Samson (eventually) go about sorting it out. It seems rather far-fetched that no one would bother to inform the police about their suspicions, but it works for the story and makes the eventual hunt far more suspenseful, knowing that Delilah and Samson are on their own.

I can’t wait for more! Date with Death is the debut novel in the Dales Detective Mystery series. This is the thrilling first story in the mystery series in which readers get to meet the main character of Delilah Metcalfe for the first time. She is a young woman that makes her living running a dating agency. The plot is fun. It could be called outrageously over the top with all sorts of shenanigans, including murder, kidnapping and fire bombs, but that is just the tip of the iceberg and that’s the point, so much action and crime in a small town. It is an entertaining read with never a dull moment. It held my attention throughout.
