About this deal

I’m assuming that it’s a much slower process to expand your manufacturing when you donate 50% of your profits to charity. but now that WGAC’s business is growing bigger, they have begun producing their products closer to the places they are sold. Don’t be misled by the fact that ‘elemental chlorine’ and ‘chlorine dioxide’ share a word in common. The chemistries of the two compounds are totally different. Recycled toilet paper is toilet paper made of paper-type content that has been recycled. The recycled content is classified into two categories: post-consumer and pre-consumer. This is because the Totally Chlorine Free method produces weaker fibres, a lower yield and higher energy requirements.

Chlorine dioxide breaks down within minutes in the air and rapidly in water, so it’s not present in the final product

Is there an ethical toilet paper?

When I run the numbers to compare this product to others ranked by the NRDC report, this looks like a solid C (but could be higher if more information were available). This puts it behind six other papers graded A and two with a B grade. I will say that this is a company that has great potential. They’re great marketers. Their product seems to be well-liked. I like that they are a B Corporation, and they seem to be funding good things in the developing world. If they would clean up their act on transparency and truly demonstrating how green their product is, as does their competition, then I’ll be a believer. Reply

Of the two types of toilet paper, the 100% recycled version is more environmentally friendly as an existing resource is being repurposed and reused, which significantly reduces carbon emissions and environmental impact. You can have read on the best eco friendly toilet paper here. Serious Tissues make a point of emphasising that their toilet rolls are made from recycled paper rather than bamboo. They promise that their toilet papers are “good for the world”, “good for people”, and “good for your bum”, and they definitely deliver on this promise. In our honest opinions, we think Who Gives A Crap’s toilet paper (both the 100% recycled and bamboo) are on par with the quality of the toilet paper made by the leading “traditional” toilet paper brands. When you buy from Who Gives A Crap, you have a choice between 100% recycled toilet roll and premium bamboo. Most paper is now bleached with chlorine dioxide in a process known as Elemental Chlorine Free (ECF). This still emits chlorine but in much smaller amounts than when elemental chlorine is used. Buying in bulk is cost-effective, working out at 23p 100sheets for recycled toilet paper and 27p per for bamboo It’s safe to say that cutting down trees to make toilet paper isn’t good for the planet. In fact, the greenest option is to forgo loo roll altogether in favour of alternatives such as bidet attachments. If that doesn’t appeal, however, opting for toilet paper made with recycled materials or from a more sustainable resource like bamboo, comes in at close second. WGAC have partnered with Pachama to evaluate their carbon emissions and offset them. They work on some cool and important projects too, such as protecting old growth forest in Brazil and preserving tropical peat swamp forests in Indonesia, where magnificent animals such as orangutan’s live.

Bamboo grows 30 times faster than trees and does not require toxic pesticides to grow, which makes it a sustainable replacement for tree pulp. The other brands that are less expensive than the 100% Recycled TP are also all 2-ply or 1-ply, which means you might be paying a bit less per square foot of toilet paper, but you may also need to use more square feet of TP per wipe if you choose a cheaper and lower ply. At our request, our recycled paper producer has been independently audited and certified under the FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) accreditation scheme, and by the BSCI (Business Social Compliance Initiative). The FSC accreditation is predominantly an environmental certification, and the BSCI audit focuses on driving social compliance and improvements in global supply chain management. The audit scored our producer the highest grade achievable across multiple categories: workers rights, freedom of association and collective bargaining, no discrimination, no child labour, no precarious employment, no bonded labour, and overall ethical business behaviours. We know it’s a mouthful, but supporting positive work environments is something that’s incredibly important to us… so excuse us for bragging a little bit.” ( https://support.whogivesacrap.org/hc/en-us/articles/360035167934-How-do-you-ensure-good-working-conditions-and-wages-) The good news is that each wrapper can be recycled, repurposed or industrially composted. WGAC even use soy-based ink that is biodegradable. Good attention to detail. Therefore, after using both Sustainable Earth by Staples and Cascades Pro Perform, it was imperative that we find an alternate zero waste toilet paper, which was where Who Gives A Crap came in.

I also love the vibrance of the Happy TP wrappers. WGAC said they wanted to boost customers’ moods and it’s hard not to be cheered up by cute dogs. A small amount of paper is produced using alternatives to chlorine such as oxygen, ozone, and hydrogen peroxide. This process is known as Totally Chlorine Free (TCF). And even though Who Gives A Crap’s 100% Recycled TP is more expensive than 2-ply 100% recycled brands like Sustainable Earth by Staples and Cascades Pro Perform, the quality of Who Gives A Crap’s toilet papers is very noticeably superior. I’ll be honest I’m always a little wary when I’m told that something is more expensive because I get more, especially when it comes to toilet roll; because who’s going to count each sheet? But the comparison photo below, I think, clearly shows that the top two toilet rolls have more sheets than the one at the bottom. All products are vegan - brands like Charmin/Cushelle confirm their toilet roll may contain animal-derived ingredients (usually in the glue to hold it together) the cost. It’s more expensive than the 100% recycled toilet paper and it definitely has a premium cost, especially if you’re buying from Canada. As toilet paper is a disposable product, you might worry that it’s wasteful to make it from material which could otherwise be used for products which could be recycled again, such as printing paper or cardboard. It’s true that high-quality paper is best recycled into printing paper but this can only be done five or six times before the fibres become too short to make strong paper so toilet paper is a good final outing for those fibres. Other companies producing recycled toilet paper in the UK include Honest Supplies. You can read my Honest Supplies review here. Who Gives a crap give 50% of their profits to help build toilets in developing countries, they are made from 100% recycled paper and they are biodegradable. These toilet rolls are individually wrapped in colourful recyclable paper, not plastic. You can even reuse the paper wrap.
