He would also release his Wars of the Roses series, which had four books in it. It began in 2013 with Stormbird, followed the next year by Margaret of Anjou, Bloodline the next year, and Ravenspur in 2016. In this book we follow for the main part the resourceful leader of Athens of that time being, Themistocles, the one with his cunning and dare will be victorious against the Persians at salamis, where at first he'll be celebrated as a hero but later on will be treated as an outcast, with close associates by the name of, Xanthippus, Aristides and Cimon also important during this Battle, also in attendance are Agariste, wife of Xanthippus, and their children, Ariphron, Eleni, and a young man to remember, Pericles, while Epikleos is always by Xanthippus's side as a faithful friend. A gripping read from the master historical storyteller. This swords-and-sandals epic brings the clash of empires between Greece and Persia to life' DAILY EXPRESS

When the Persians return, when they cross the Hellespont to take revenge on the Greeks, will Xanthippus come home to save his people?

Themistocles is the leader of Athens, scarred by battle. But he’s not officially a nobleman, and he finds that many don’t trust him. However, these people cannot fight against two facts. Those are the victories he has had as a warrior, and the fact that there is a huge Persian army coming.Well, I did not plan to read this for quite a while, at least until I quashed some other books that I need to read soon. But, The Gates of Athens had different plans. It was just too good. Too good to not read the sequel as soon as I could. It was one of my favourite reads of 2021, so of course I had to dive into the sequel. I had some trouble with getting to know the different characters during the first novel, but this second part felt like a happy reunion with some favourite characters. I definitely prefer Protector over Gates of Athens because it offers more direct action and some interesting character building. His first book was the first of the Emperor five-part series titled The Gates of Rome. It is based on Julius Caesar’s life from childhood to adulthood, betrayal, and death. Spitfire Productions bought the film option for the series. The fifth book in the series was called Emperor: The Blood of Gods. He would leave teaching English to write The Gates of Rome, his first novel. He married his wife Ella, who hails from southern Italy’s Amalfi coast. Her relatives there are known for being specialist producers of craft pasta and ravioli. The pair shares four children and they live in Hertfordshire, England. If Iggulden decides to tell that tale—of how the third Alexander from Macedonia’s royal family came to be known as “the Great”—I will absolutely devour it (top-down storytelling or not). Especially if Iggulden relates it with the same deft blend of pacing and politics he showcases in Protector.
