About this deal

The Coffeevac arrives assembled in the box. Taken apart, it consists of a lid and the container body.

For the full scoop on speciality coffee including the amazing (sounds made up, it isn't!) story about the woman who pushed against all the odds to pretty much single-handedly start the speciality coffee movement, see: Old Dutch International Canister Set: This four-piece hammered copper set takes something timeless and mixes in new-age elements, such as silicone gaskets. However, the airtight seal wasn't the best. It was difficult to fully close the lids on some of the canisters in the set, indicating that air was getting in and out. The ones that did close were difficult to open and shut. It requires two hands and a lot of effort to remove the lid and get to your coffee beans. The only issue I can see with them is that they seem slightly hit and miss when it comes to keeping the vacuum seal, with quite a few users reporting that the vacuum is often lost after several hours, and this seems to be more common with the steel version than the glass, I'm not 100% sure why, but I think that in some cases cleaning the edge of the container before sealing may help. Whole bean coffee freshness: We performed a similar test with whole beans that we did with ground coffee, storing half a bag in each canister and the other half in the bag over the course of eight days. We made notes on color and aroma of the beans before and after storage, and prepared a cup of coffee with the canister- and bag-stored beans to compare their flavor. As a further test of post-storage freshness, we sealed a few beans in zip-top bags and watched to see if the bags puffed up. (Fresh coffee beans produce carbon dioxide, which gradually inflates a sealed bag.) Otherwise, just put fewer beans in the hopper, instead of emptying the entire bag into the hopper, just put in the hopper a rough guestimate of how much you're likely to use that morning for example. How/Where Should You Store Coffee Beans? The Fellow Atmos Vacuum Canisteris sleek, easy to use, and available in several sizes and colors, not to mention it has a dependable airtight seal. As an alternative, the Oxo Steel Pop Containehas excellent value for money and passed our tests with flying colors. How We Tested Coffee Canisters

They're often sold as vacuum storage containers, which I don't think is quite right, as they only allow a relatively small amount of air to be pushed out given that the valve is in the lid, they can't actually create a vacuum in and of themselves.

As you'll learn if you keep reading this post, there are a number of things that your storage location must protect the beans from, and guess what? The bean hopper protects them from ZERO! My solution for this is to have two 500g storage containers, a cheaper option such as Coffeevac, and a more premium option such as Airscape or Fellow Atmos. You can find the Le Creuset Storage Canister in three sizes, starting at 23 ounces and working up to this 2.5-quart model. This offers the chance to buy a matching set in various sizes should you want to store other kitchen goods, like sugar and flour. The canister is dishwasher-safe, although the lid is hand-wash only.

I'll get into these a bit later in this post, but the number one function of a coffee bean storage solution is to keep out air. The key cause of staling is oxidation, so by keeping our coffee beans in airtight storage, we help to slow down oxidation, and therefore to a certain degree at least, we help to slow down the staling process.

So if you're doing this, just grab yourself a single doser attachment for your grinder, and weigh the beans you're about to use. Determining which Coffeevac is best for you depends on your needs and usage. Whatever you choose, rest assured as your product is used, and more space is made in the container, the Coffeevac will keep your food items just as fresh as when it’s full. This doesn't necessarily mean you have to single dose, you certainly can do that if you prefer, but it's not necessary.
