Lastly, these Cabasse speakers have the advantage of being natively compatible with more online music services (Qobuz, Tidal, Deezer, Spotify, etc.), featuring voice control and being compatible with Hi-Res files, including DSD. The sound signature is quite similar, but the bass is less physical and punchy than with the Bang & Olufsen Beosound Edge and its Active Bass Port technology. The Beoplay’s sound distribution is also a little narrower. Despite its 7 drivers and 950 watts of power, the bass provided by the Bang & Olufsen Beoplay A9 4th Gen isn’t as powerful as that of the Beosound Edge. Bang and Olufsen have always delivered a great blend of style and functionality. This dedicated Danish company knows that a device has to do more than just look good to earn customers these days.

We had a short demonstration of the Edge at IFA, and it certainly held its own making a statement on the busy, noisy showfloor. But while we can't comment on the performance of the Edge, it's undoubtedly one of the most interestingly designed and engineered audio products launched at IFA 2018. As mentioned above, the patented active bass design means that the deepness of your music adjusts to each increase in volume. Inside the Beosound Edge, you also get two 3-quarter inch tweeters, a set of four-inch drivers, and a 10-inch woofer with 6 class D amplifiers. It’s a massive, circular, wireless speaker that pumps out crystal clear sound and potent bass from both sides. It’s no BB-8, but it’s a lovely interactive feature that really makes you feel like you’re physically controlling the device, rather than using a remote to do so. The Edge can also be wall-mounted, although I’m not sure how easy it is to take down and move around the house once it’s up there due to its sheer height and width.
