About this deal

The Augustiner remains in private hands thanks to the energy of Ferdinand Schmid. Schmid was regarded as the “patron saint” of Munich beer, not only for his defense of Bavaria’s brewing tradition, but for convincing Edith Haberland-Wagner, the last direct heir of Joseph Wagner, to establish a foundation to run the brewery prior to her passing. Like Brasserie Dupont for saisons or Sierra Nevada for modern West Coast hoppy beers, there are some true masters in the world of Helles. The Augustiner Brewery was first mentioned by name in 1328, established within an Augustianian Monastery which had been settled just outside the Munich city walls in an area called Haberfeld (or Haferfeld – "oat field") in 1294. [4] The Monastery complex was the largest sacred building in Munich until the completion of the Frauenkirche cathedral in 1494. [5] The Augustinian monks supplied beer to the Bavarian Royal Wittelsbach family until 1589, at which time the Hofbräu brewery was founded.

It is not known when Augustiner beer was first featured at the Oktoberfest, but the first record of an Augustiner beer stall is featured on a picture dating from 1867. The first appearance of an Augustiner beer "castle" was later in 1903, and finally in 1926, the Augustiner Festhalle was erected for the first time. The original tent featured a tower, which was later removed from the construction design during the years 1949-2010. The tower was reinstated in 2010 in celebration of the 200th anniversary of the Oktoberfest, and has continued to be a feature of the Festhalle to this day. Since 1987, Augustiner is the only brewery of the 6 featured at Oktoberfest, to exclusively pour from their wooden barrels. Adams hits the nail on the head. Helles is all about balance. So if you find excessive hop flavors or overly complex malt character, it’s likely the brewer was overcompensating in one area.He almost certainly means babies. After all, babies haven’t added any new sins to their Original Sin plate. (He confirms our suspicions in The City of God at the end of Chapter 3.) In The City of God, Augustine describes Hell as torture along lines we likely find very familiar. In fact, he sounds downright giddy about that torture: Augustiner attaches a high degree of importance to draught beer in wooden barrels. The Lagerbier Hell is served from wooden casks at the Augustiner Bräustuben, the Edelstoff makes a cask appearance in the warmer months at the Augustiner Keller, and the Oktoberfest beer flows from wooden barrels on the Wiesn. The brewery also malts its own grain in its historic threshing floor malt house on the brewery premises. Despite the extra effort, the folks at Augustiner are convinced that the investment in this traditional malting process is worth the return in flavour. All of this care and attention to detail takes extra time, and it adds up to a defense of brewing tradition at a time when many breweries their size look more to the bottom line. He wrote about doctrines, Trinitarianism, world history recast as a massive battle between Yahweh and sin ( The City of God), and what is quite possibly the coolest name ever for any book ever devised: Enchiridion on Faith, Hope and Love. (“Enchiridion” just means a handbook of essential information. But it’s still beyond cool-sounding.) He brought to the religion a deep appreciation of Neoplatonism, a philosophy that fit in well with the new faith’s ideas.

This beer is a very good looker. Very clear, a light golden yellow with a lovely frothy white head, and has some good lacing to boot. Its a fantastic looking beer, really inviting to drink! It is very clear to look at, excellent. In 1803, as part of a secularization movement, the monastery was dissolved, and the brewery was run by the state before passing into private ownership. [4] Then in 1817, as the original building had fallen in great disrepair, the brewery was moved to Neuhauser Straße. [4] The brewery are big on the whole Oktoberfest scene, with a Augustiner-Bier booth serving people from at least 1867 onwards.Since 1987, the Augustiner brewery remains the only brewery, out of the the six Munich breweries at the Oktoberfest, that exclusively taps its beer from wooden barrels only. This section does not cite any sources.
