About this deal

If I’m going to be honest, Lightstrike has ruined some of my favorite shoes in the last six months (see: Adios 5 and SL20), topped over the Boost midsole like a licorice layer on an ice cream sundae. None of these offerings were honestly that bad, they just didn’t have the snap off the forefoot I have loved for years from just plain Boost. Lightstrike is just a bit lifeless to me. Some brands shape their ankle collar to support the ankle bone better, while others use extra pads to secure it. Either way, find one that fits right. If you have tried the previous version of the Boston-model, you will notice that Boston 9 has been designed with a new upper which is lighter and provides a great fit. But having said that, it has a great touch with the surface and great control when you turn corners, change direction or run on more wet surfaces. DAVE: One of the smoothest shoes around right now. Perfect for all types of runners and gaits. As a coach who also used to teach biomechanical clinics around the country, I can tell you the Boston 9 is a great exploration for the runner looking to improve some mechanics in a safe and natural way. It creates a nice forward lean, and with a nice snappy toe-off, gives a good amount of the required knee lift and drive to make those runs feel like you’re rolling through Eldoret. Well maybe not, but you know what I mean.

A shoe’s upper is another great point of consideration. Most shoe brands used to craft the upper with glued mesh and fabric. In recent times, brands now use 3D technology and knitting to create smoother and seamless finishing. Running shoes are designed to help you run in a way that protects your leg and prevents injuries. They are also built to increase your athletic performance. There are different types with extra biomechanical features to improve specific athletic goals.Mileage is the main factor for determining if your running shoes need replacement. A good rule is replacing it once you hit 300-500 miles.

If there’s one thing that doesn’t change, it’s the Continental rubber on the outsole, and that’s good as it enhances the platform’s durability by protecting the foam from the midsole. Getting your daily fitness run differs from preparing for a marathon, so the right shoe for both occasions is different. I have always questioned whether this system really provides any technical advantage or if just adds to the shoe’s weight. It’s also great for weightlifting and dancing because it provides extra support to keep weight off the ankles and feet. The first Boston 8 version (with Lightstrike) had the shallowest internal volume of any shoe I’ve put on my foot in a long time. And even for my narrow foot, the toe box was so darn crammed, my feet would fall asleep on a run. However, the second version of the Boston 8 with just Boost fit fine. No clue how that fit got so bad in literally 6 months. But hang on here.

Dougie: As seems to the be the way with adidas, for myself at least, I found the fit to be a little too tight and had to go up half a size. Not too much of an issue as the width was still perfectly fine from a UK 9.5 to a 10 in my size, it is worth noting there aren't any additional width fittings so if you often go for wider options, you could find yourself going up a full size to find that optimum fit.

The design is really so cool. I really love it. The white color is always a huge hit when it comes to racers. And I think the summer-like colors around the heel, the inside and the complete midsole just provides an enormously feminine and fast expression. The midsole also utilizes a thermoplastic platform in the midfoot for some added stability. Adidas calls this feature the Torsion system and has been using it in their shoes for years. During my training I thought Boston 9 was perfect for racing and intervals and for short races. And even if its said to be able to handle races as far as marathons, I wouldn´t go quite that far. Personally I would miss more comfort just because I know how hard the last 8-10km of a marathon can be. The brand has several collections of daily trainers – one of its best running and distant flat collections is the Adidas Boston 9. The midsole is a winning combination of Lightstrike foam that has been touted by some and doubted by others (including Dave and I after reviewing the SL20 recently) and the already proven Boost cushioning used in previous Boston editions. Now that I’m done gushing on the Boston, let’s dive into the dirty deets on the all-new Adizero Boston 9 and see if the Lightstrike did this in.

The upper and outsole in the Boston 10 are as good as in the Boston 9. An ultra-light, tight and breathable upper, which emphasizes that this is a fast shoe where efforts have been made to minimize the weight - which is why the upper is thinner contrary to a classic high-mileage training shoe. At the same time the ADIDAS’ Continental rubber compound in the outsole provides an incredible grip regardless of weather conditions. You can write the date you got your shoes on the inside, and also note the mileage in your training log. This will help you know when you need newer running shoes. Gone are the days of BOOST, welcome to the Lightstrike Pro era! The midsole of the Adidas Adizero Boston uses two layers: regular on the bottom and Pro on the top.

The change is so drastic from one version to another that it seems more logical to treat these two shoes as different models rather than part of the same collection. Your running surface is where you’ll typically go for your runs. Traditional running shoes are great for pavement running, indoor surfaces, and even trails. They usually have flexible outsoles and are lightweight. ISO Standards regulate sizing in the shoe industry, but brands may still have slight variations that make all the difference when running. So, testing out your shoes is the only way to be sure it’s the fit you want.
