About this deal

Today, the six nominees for the EE Game of the Year Award have been announced ahead of the BAFTA Games Awards on Thursday 30th March 2023.

There’s a reason a snake’s skeleton, and not a snake itself, features prominently in the title sequence of Snake Eater. This was the game that stripped the Metal Gear formula down to its very core and proved that it could still function even outside our expectations. It forced us to take what we knew about espionage and infiltration and learn how to apply it in a new, unfamiliar environment, and it did so with a bold and elegant understanding of its own systems. You could have all the stealth know-how and military training in the world, but out there in the unpredictable jungle of the Russian wilderness, you were exposed, vulnerable… a Naked Snake. And it worked. Snake Eater is arguably one of the most interesting love stories ever told in a game, one of the strangest and most exciting Cold War-era adventures, and one of the first games to truly make me reflect on my actions as a player. It manages to be tragic, sometimes devastatingly so, and yet still maintain that absurd comedic flair that I admire about this series. Any game that can make you emotional about climbing a ladder deserves some kind of recognition. - Lonnie Rad (Read Our Review) 26. Half-Life: Alyx The 2023 nominees are: Elden Ring, God of War Ragnarok, Horizon Forbidden West, Immortality, Marvel Snap and Stray The objective of the game is to name items within certain categories. Each card has one of six different symbols and when two players have the same symbol on the card on the top of their pile, they both race to give as many examples of their opponent's category as they can without repeating a phrase. The fastest player takes his opponent's card and places it facedown in his score pile. What can you say about the definitive fighting game, the game that has spawned countless imitators, acolytes, and sequels? Street Fighter II remains a classic in video game lore, making series mainstays Ryu, Ken, and Chun-Li as well as words like “Hadouken” part of the public lexicon. Everyone has a favorite character and that’s because of its diverse, fantastical character design. While exceptionally balanced, the imaginative design and high-end graphics for its time helped set it apart. Street Fighter II became perhaps the first fighting game global arcade smash and it is still celebrated today. - Christian Holt 21. Super Mario Bros.

The gameplay is a hugely different system and experience to BOTW. The freedom of navigation has expanded by definition of the skies being traversable and the tools which allow you to construct vehicles. The level of engagement Nintendo have offered is now fundamentally limitless. We’ve been give their developer tools (in a very meta and in universe way) to find creative ways to “break” the game. This game is a better bet for large groups because it still covers funny, pop-culture references, as well as raunchy, sexual, and explicit phrases that make a game like Cards Against Humanity so fun, without some of the more offensive jokes. If you’re not comfortable sharing an extremely dirty, insensitive joke with any of those people, you should refrain from playing. It scored well overall, but we found that as time went on, the plays became more predictable.

As for the Yiga Clan, this connects directly on from BOTW’s ending & their goal is researching and pillaging the depths in preparation for Ganondorfs return - so if anything they are more connected to the main story than last time (even if this is ultimately a side adventure). The jury has now handed over control, with the final decision in the hands of the public. Voting for the EE Game of the Year opens from today and closes at 18:00 GMT Sunday 26th March. There's a reason first-person puzzle games far and wide are constantly compared to Portal — though a brief adventure, its gameplay, tone, writing, and structure so cohesively work together to create one of the most memorable, challenging, and fascinating puzzle games around. Arming players with the now-iconic Portal gun and the devastating - and lethal - wit of Glad0s, Valve guided players through a fantastically orchestrated and escalating set of physics-based puzzles that ended with one of the most memorable end-credits songs of all time. But for as great as its puzzles are, and the way they take the simplicity of two portals you can shoot almost anywhere into such fascinating territory, it's also Portal's world-building that equally makes the game such a memorable touchstone. - Jonathon Dornbush (Read Our Review) 22. Street Fighter II gloom - so this is just a typical category that all platforms have to celebrate the best game of their specific system. Don’t forget Ultimate Game of the Year, Best Performer and Best Supporting Performer have a separate voting window that opens on Monday, October 23 2023 for one week only. After testing, this game proved great for big groups during house parties because it’s fine to leave off when players want to pause for a chat or a refill. Each round is only about 20 to 30 minutes long, so you can play again and again without getting bored. It has a high replay value and will prove a different game with every group you play with. I also think because TOTK is a direct sequel, it’s going to have a harder time going against the competition because the game is an evolution (or completion) of what BOTW could be. I’ve no doubt if this was the revelatory game that BOTW was 6 years ago on debut, then it would have wiped the floor with most of these awards.

Subjective Interpretation - We asked experts across various parts of the industry for their diverse, and personal, view on why some games deserve to be elevated above others. Sure, you know why a certain game is acclaimed, but why do you love it? What aspect of the game deserves to be uniquely celebrated? Dr Jo Twist OBE, Chair of the Games Committee at BAFTA, said: “In a year when games have been an invaluable way to stay socially connected and entertained for so many around the world, we are delighted to be working with EE to give the global community of games fans the chance to choose their favourite. The shortlisted games are all excellent contenders and I look forward to seeing which title the public choose to crown our first ever winner of the EE Game of the Year Award.”Similar to the superlative selection process from your high school days, The Voting Game asks you to vote on the “most likely” candidates from your group.
