As I’ve already pointed out, I managed to avoid inclement weather during my test though I do feel very confident about the Beta 550XL’s 3,000 HH waterproof rating, which is a lot better than most cheaper weekend tents. Multiple flysheet doors - provides easy entry from either side giving protection from prevailing winds Since there are no doors in the way, this type of configuration is great for storing belongings in the area where the front tapers down and where you’re never going to be walking. Having two entrances also increases ventilation when the heat is on. On the downside, it may mean orientating the Beta 550 side-on so you can see the view from either of the two side entrances. On the plus side, both entrances are nice and wide, with just a short three-inch lip of groundsheet fabric to step over. Sadly, only one entrance is fitted with insect mesh. The CLR, or Colour range of tents from Vango are a step forward in the use of recycled and repurposed materials. The coloured trims around the doors, along the pole sleeves or guyline points are offcuts from the manufacturing process which would have previously ended up in landfill. Vango have specially sourced these offcuts and guarantee the performance of the fabrics to meet their high standards.

Having already tested the exceptional Coleman Air Valdes with sewn-in groundsheet, I was a little alarmed to discover that this model’s waterproof PE groundsheet and bedroom compartment are separate entities, and the inner section needs to be attached to the flysheet after the flysheet has been pitched. Many tent manufacturers still use this configuration, and it’s true that it does make the groundsheet easier to wash separately. We have had the flysheet replaced and I'm now anxious about the replacement, we'll be testing it next week (although not exactly hoping for rain!). I am just now considering putting it into retirement in favour of either a fast pitch tent, or something that I can stand up in, ideally both. Though I like the tent so much, I may not end up giving up on her just yet. Will see out the season and see how I feel. This is the sort of tent you can get attached to, funny as it sounds.
