About this deal

The Edge has said that Songs of Surrender was made with the awareness that most people listen through earbuds now, which is a telling explanation of the trade-off being made on Songs of Surrender. The communal experience offered by U2’s greatest anthems is replaced with something more personal, more individual. The momentum and release and exhilaration they define at their best becomes instead something that’s alternately lovely and flat, revelatory and redundant. Towards the end of the new version of “City of Blinding Lights,” an electric guitar figure chimes out and suddenly, briefly comes the rush of hearing a U2 song. Hilton, Robin (17 March 2023). The process of selecting which songs to revisit started with a series of demos. I looked at how a song would hang together if all but the bare essential elements were taken away. The other main aim was to find ways to bring intimacy into the songs, as most of them were originally written with live concert performance in mind."

Over the course of recording Songs of Surrender, the Edge estimated that the group created 50 new song arrangements in total. [11] Songs such as " Angel of Harlem" and " Moment of Surrender" were in contention to be included on the album but were ultimately left off. [21] Release and promotion [ edit ] Pre-announcement updates [ edit ] One song that saw the most extensive lyrical changes was " Walk On", which was originally released in 2000. At the time, Bono had written it for Burmese academic Aung San Suu Kyi, who was under house arrest from 1989 to 2010 for her pro-democracy activities. Following her ascent to the office of state counsellor, she was criticised for Myanmar's inaction to the genocide of the Rohingya people. Bono said he "felt so let down" by her and decided to re-write the song's lyrics for a different person, instead paying tribute to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy for his leadership against the Russian invasion of his country. [14] Bono and the Edge performed the new version of the song on 9 April 2022 for Global Citizen's Stand Up for Ukraine livestream, which was organised to urge world leaders to raise funds for Ukrainian refugees. [18] As vocals were being recorded for Songs of Surrender and preparations were being made to mix the album, Bono and the Edge were invited by Zelenskyy's chief of staff to visit Ukraine for a performance. They immediately halted work on the album and within 3–4 days boarded a train into Kyiv. [19] They performed the new version of "Walk On" for Zelenskyy in a subway station during their 8 May visit. News of the album and its title first leaked on April 1, 2022 via U2Songs.com. However, prior to that Adam Clayton revealed the band were working on such a project in 2021 via U2 X-Radio, sharing, “Well, you know we are playing around with rearranging some of the songs that we have and setting them in a more acoustic environment. Edge got a bit of a bee in his bonnet and said you know, no pun intended, said let’s look at these songs and imagine them in a different context. So we are playing around with that. He’s putting a lot of work into changing the keys, and moving them onto piano and that sort of thing. And hopefully we will have something towards the end of the year that will show a different light on U2. I think it’s an opportunity to explore different versions of the band in a way. Because it’s very much the early days, it’s embryonic, it could go somewhere between Leonard Cohen or Johnny Cash – very stripped down and bare – towards something that is very lush.” At the time Adam was not confident on how the material would be released, and whether it would be a single album, or a series of EPs. The duo were encouraged by the results of their first session together, during which Bono sang over the Edge's musical sketches. [11] In the cases of several songs, including "Stories for Boys", " Two Hearts Beat as One", " Desire", and " Peace on Earth", Bono liked the Edge's demo vocals enough that he encouraged the Edge to sing on the final versions. [14] While experimenting with new arrangements for the songs, the Edge changed their keys, chords, and rhythms, [9] while Bono often rewrote the lyrics. [10]

This a particularly interesting album for Bono and the Edge. Bono’s singing has changed radically over the years, as he’s found new vocal ranges, more often going for the croon than the belt. Songs like “One” and “Vertigo” are a showcase for that more pliant instrument. But it’s the Edge who feels most triumphant here. Over the years, he has sometimes been the victim of accusations that U2 tunes rely a little too much on his simple melodies and a dazzling array of guitar effects. On Songs of Surrender, he reminds you these are sturdy songs that can be rethought without any sonic window dressing. Blistein, Jon (10 January 2023).
