About this deal

Giana is a character I absolutely adored. Despite her disability, she wanted to have her own voice. She's such a strong woman, and I loved that she wasn't shy about communicating what she wanted.

Yseult carries secrets from the past that she hoped never to see surface again, but with the Garda presence now on her lands, it’s not long before Yseult has to make some decisions and face up to her family’s tragic story.Giana and Declan's book is a feel-good story that leaves you with all the feelings. Declan is a professional surfer that is in Orchid City staying with his brother to recover from an injury. He rescues a sea turtle (so cute) and drops her off at a rehab facility where he meets Giana. He names the sea turtle Pop Tart! OMG, how cute is that??? I loved how much Declan wanted to step up and learn ASL for her. Those moments were the sweetest and beautiful. The moment Giana gave him a personal sign for his name melted my heart and had me in tears. Giana Cirone could break me into a million pieces and I would still love her until my last dying breath. In this life and the next. She was the abyss where the ocean met the sun.”

Today I bring you my review of this heartbreaking tale of a young Irish boy, who was taken away from his home and family in Co. Kerry, and forced to become an indentured slave/servant on an island in the Caribbean. I am absolutely obsessed with this series by Cali. This was such a good comfort read…it was like Cali gave me a big warm hug. Because I was working under such a tight deadline, I had to get immersed in their lives. My routine was rigid. I have a full-time job which I finished at 5pm. I’d begin writing at 6pm until midnight. My bedtime reading was research. Everything that happened in my life was seen through the eyes of my characters. I love hearing what other people are passionate about reading, even if they can’t narrow it down to a favourite. Which book do you wish you could thrust into the arms of strangers and demand they read immediately? Ireland, 1991: One hundred years later, a skeleton is discovered beneath a fallen tree on the grounds of Lugdale Estate. By its side is a gold coin minted in 1870. Yseult, the owner of the estate, watches as events unfold, fearful of the long-buried truths that may emerge about her family’s past and its links to the slave trade. As the skeleton gives up its secrets, Yseult realizes she too can no longer hide.

Two years ago, I spent a month in Cuba. I imagined the exiled Irish and their surprise at the landscape and torturous heat of the Caribbean, the people and culture that was so vastly different to Ireland. At the time of my travels to Cuba, I was working on a different historical novel that required a great deal of research. When I finished the first novel, I was reluctant to take on another novel with the same level of research, yet the Jamaican story needled me to explore it further. I found the voice of Art O’Neill, an eleven year old boy who crosses the Atlantic in 1821 and, once Art O’Neill began to talk, he couldn’t stop. Declan is a surfer, but experienced an injury during a competition. One day, Declan rescued a sea turtle and brought it into a rehab center, where he meets Giana. From that moment, he knew that it was love at first sight and that he was all in the moment he met her. The plus points of this book are the historic relevance, the descriptions of Jamaica and its culture. However, in some parts the narrative drags on slightly and I found it hard to keep up with every word in print for that took away from the crux of the story. The second part especially has more of a drag and it takes away from the narrative that was built up well in the first half of the book. There are some novels that give you goosebumps as you read, those novels that really hit home with you. The Tide Between Us is one such novel for me. This book was a total joy to read and had me grinning constantly. The instant connection and attraction between Giana and Declan felt natural and although it’s fast paced, it felt natural and fit nicely into the storyline.

The book beautifully portrays her passion for the ocean and the way it becomes a place of solace and understanding for her. When the new heirs to the plantation arrive from Ireland, they resurrect the ghosts of brutal injustices against Art. He bides his time and hides his abhorrence from his new master by channeling his energy into his work. During those years, he prospers, acquires land, sees his colored children freed after emancipation as he takes us on a multi-generational historical saga.

At first he thinks she is ignoring him as when he calls out to her she doesn't respond. Soon he finds out she has lost her ability to hear and that's why she didn't know he was there. Because it came up in such sincere interactions between Dec and Gia, Cali’s constant usage of the book’s title throughout the entire novel, had a wholesome feel to it. Filter. The novel pauses at times to detail Art’s experiences with the white family, his slave friends, and his evolving hate for the English who sent him away from his beloved Ireland. Art’s hate becomes his focus when the old master dies and his heir comes to take over; Art recognizes Blair Stratford-Rice, who had his father hung, and begins plotting how he might seek revenge.
