I'll echo what a few other reviewers have said: This feels like an earlier work that was published after a successful career. The concept of the story is great. However, the Extinction Trials feels like it could have been the first draft of the Extinction Files. Either that, or that Riddle tried to create a new story based on the Extinction Files template. I loved the way in which Riddle used the theme of memory to such great effect in the Extinction Files. It feels like it was lazily borrowed in this book. I thought the twist at the end of Genome was brilliant. Sadly, it made the ending of the Extinction Trials feel somewhat recycled. I fell in love with AG Riddle when I read the Extinction Files (Books 1&2). I found the Long Winter to be a great trilogy as well (though I'll admit a bias for books 1 & 2 there).

And then there's the final twist. I'm not telling you anything, but it did not come totally unexpected. And the prologue was rounding up everything in a very satisfactory way.Linc is going because he is the hero and obviously going to use his reward to save his sister who is dying. Duh. While we are on the topic of Lincoln I would just like to say that the "romance" was old YA and honestly, I didn't think this shit was around anymore. Lincoln's literal thoughts: " Fluttershy Storm is soooo pretty, look are her hair, and her eyes and.. NO! I have to focus, I have to win. For my family. They are the only thing I have, I can't get distracted by pretty girls! Look at how the sun glistens off of her biceps. She is just so so pretty, but probably smart too. I'm not an asshole who just likes girls for their looks. Focus, Lincoln!"
