About this deal

The main character is incredibly likable. Even as they are very young you can sympathize and relate to them. They are also the very definition of a hero; they're powerful, courageous and wise. The manga makes you actually care about their problems and you can't help but root for the kid. Mood Whiplash: The story has light comedy moments contrasted to dark events, but seldom quite so abruptly as the first chapter where Tokiyuki's hometown is taken over by the army of the Ashikaga shogunate. By May 2022, the manga had over 1 million copies in circulation, [37] and over 1.5 million copies in circulation by April 2023. [38] at all, but I wish there was a bit more of action, because most part of it is strategy (which I think it's cool!), but I feel that the pacing could improve just a little.

Nevertheless, the largest issue with the series is the amount of historical knowledge required to fully enjoy the series. The series largely does not attempt to explain the life, politics, and culture of 1333. Without prior knowledge of the Kamakura shogunate, Ashikaga shogunate, Emperor Go-Daigo, and shugo, this series is a tough read. I feel like this series would not have been licensed in English unless it became incredibly popular in Japan before the age of Weekly Shonen Jump simulpub. The one thing I don't understand is why some of the characters, like the priest, look like mad men in some panels. It makes him look creepy and like someone we shouldn't trust. In medieval Japan, young Hojo Tokiyuki is the heir to the Kamakura shogunate. All seems peaceful and secure in the lands. The great warrior, Takauji, protects the empire and watches over Tokiyuki—who much prefers to run off and play rather than study with his royal teachers or practice archery. The story is a grand adventure of a young boy's journey to redeem his seat as the heir to the shogun. This is the best written adventure/action shonen from recent times. The narrative about rejecting seppuku/harakiri is amazingly executed and since most shonen only have

creating gorgeous historical settings and clothes. Every panel feels incredibly detailed. The character designs are nice as well. Each chapter, I look forward to seeing the art more than the story. Set between the Kamakura and Muromachi periods, during the Kenmu Restoration, the story follows the tale of Hojo Tokiyuki, a boy on the run after his family is overthrown by Ashikaga Takauji. With his only allies being a shady priest and his followers, the young lord must seek revenge and regain his glory, with his only weapon: a superhuman ability to flee and hide. What would you do if your whole family was brutally annihilated and some of your relatives even ending it themselves to not let down the honor of your clan and all you could do is just run away? Elusive Samurai tells you that it's better to run away and survive than it is to give up and die for nothing. The first time I read it, I was like "oh cool, another shonen taking place in the past", but it's not. The story moves slow forward, but worth it! (imo) by the time I'm making this review the series has shown that it has great potential, but judging by the pacing, it might take a bit long to get to it's climax. The story is not bad

Unmoving Plaid: On the manga's various cover arts, this is how the patterns on robes and clothing of various characters are depicted - a single portrait superimposed over whatever the cover's character happens to be wearing.

Clap Your Hands If You Believe: According to Yorishige, the strength of divine power is directly proportional to the people's faith in the gods. The power and influence of the gods is destined to wane as time goes on and humanity starts viewing miracles as natural phenomenon rather than the work of divine beings. I love early TES for its set-up. Early TES is based around the MC hiding his identity while dealing with quirky villains and facing off against them in challenges tailored to their skillset. While there is a bit of this in Volume 1, its seen more in the following volumes. Volume 1 is a bit more of a setup as it introduces you to the cast. This does make it a bit of a drier read than later volumes.

The art of The Elusive Samurai is incredible and is easily its greatest asset. Matsui Yuusei has done a wonderful job But for Me, It Was Tuesday: Lead by the traitorous Takauji, the destruction and takeover of Kamakura was a massacre that claimed the lives of Tokiyuki's brother, father, and most of the Hojo clan. When he finally gets the chance to ask why he did it, Takauji smiles and replies that he doesn't really know, it just turned out that way. To add insult to injury he doesn't even recognize Tokiyuki as he says this straight to his face. Hodgkins, Crystalyn (January 17, 2021).
