POGP. 2018. Fit for the future: essential exercises and advice after childbirth. Pelvic, Obstetric and Gynaecological Physiotherapy. POGP booklet [Accessed May 2018] Newborns and infants should never be left alone around any body of water, like bathtubs or pools. It’s important to keep in mind that a child can drown in even just 1 inch of water. The AAP gives clear guidelines on the possible warning signs of potential drowning. Signs that may indicate a person is in danger of drowning include: If you don’t go to an organised class, most swimming pools run toddler and child sessions. They make taking your child in the pool a bit easier and a lot more fun than a standard swim with those nonstop length swimmers. Take a dressing gown or poncho towel for your older baby It’s important to know that newborns and infants younger than 12 months old aren’t yet able to raise their heads above the water to breathe, so swimming lessons aren’t yet appropriate for them.

Exercising in water means reduced strain on your joints when compared to other exercises like running or football. This makes swimming popular with older people and those with mobility problems. However, swimming is considered a beneficial activity for people of any age or ability. Starting to swimHaving the kids in the pool for the first time could be a little daunting, but learning to swim is one of the joys of childhood. Make it more enjoyable for them by providing some simple swimming aids which will help them feel even more comfortable in the water with some must-have swimming accessories. Swimming Float Don’t worry if you haven’t been swimming before or if you even have a fear of water. Your local pool will usually have beginners’ lessons for all ages. This’ll help get you started and build your confidence in the water.

A reflex called the bradycardic response (also called the diving reflex) makes babies hold their breath and open their eyes when submerged in water. (You can cause this same reaction by blowing in your baby's face.) This reflex starts to go away after six months, but may last for up to a year.

They also do other handy stuff like having changing mats on the side of the pool for if your baby has a mid-swim accident. Otherwise, you must be a truly selfish parent, surely. Incorrect.

Plus, your baby's inbuilt gag reflex is generally strongest up to six months old. This reflex allows him to hold his breath under water without even thinking about it (Cluett et al 2018). How do I find out about baby swimming lessons?Ask whether your local pool does swimming classes or sessions for parents and babies. If your child is learning swimming at a younger age, it will be important for you to do “touch supervision,” which entails you being close by or joining her in the pool A Centers for Disease Control and Prevention study in 2012 of United States data from 2005–2009 indicated that each year an average of 513 children aged 0–4 years were victims of fatal drowning and a further 3,057 of that age range were treated in U.S. hospital emergency departments for non-fatal drowning. Of all the age groups, children aged 0–4 years had the highest death rate and also non-fatal injury rate. In 2013, among children 1 to 4 years old who died from an unintentional injury, almost 30% died from drowning. [8] These children most commonly drowned in swimming pools, often at their own homes. NHS Choices, Common health questions [Accessed May 2018]

The most important thing is that your child is comfortable and having fun during swim lessons. If you take them and they're consistently scared of the water or uncomfortable in a class setting, take a break and wait until your child's more comfortable in the water before going to formal lessons. (Instead, get a small kiddie pool to play in at home, or spend some time together at a pool.)
