About this deal

He feels not only grateful to his devoted readers, but also beholden to them. People expect certain things from a Jonas Jonasson novel, and so if Sweet Sweet Revenge Ltd is pure confection, an escapist’s fantasy, it is because his fans demand it of him. “A recent review of my book made a connection to Covid,” he says, “saying that this was exactly the kind of literature we need in dark times.” He leans into his computer camera now, his face filling the screen. “Well, times aren’t getting any brighter, are they?” What I’m reading now? Sweet Sweet Revenge Ltd. is a comical, if not laugh-out-loud novel from Jonas Jonasson. I always like the cover artwork on the novels as they are instantly recognisable. So kudos to Jonathan Pelham who designed the cover series. It is certainly a comedy (loosely speaking) of errors from start to finish. Featuring the most (literally as there is FAR too many of them) eccentric and outrageous cast of characters -who I’m sorry, some opinions were utterly abhorrent, making it extremely hard to invest in them (Tw/ mild racism and homophobia) which even if this was their ‘personality’ or the writers intention, was nevertheless extremely uncomfortable to read. I have always enjoyed books by Jonas Jonasson, so I was excited about reading this new work of his. Much like his other books, Sweet Sweet Revenge, Ltd is quirky but with a heart. A bunch of lovable, bumbling characters, with seemingly nothing in common, come together for a grand story. It’s an elegant way of saying in one sentence what Great Britain did without sounding too much like a teacher. I’m always happy if you can see a serious message in the one-liner.fieser schwedischer Kunsthndler, naive Jungehefrau, schwarzafrikanischer uneheliche Sohn, der vom Vater in der afrikanischen Savanne zum Sterben ausgesetzt wird, um dort postwendend von einem abgedrehten, hinterwäldlerischen Massai aufgelesen und adoptiert zu werden.... wow I loved this book I am now out recommending it to all my friends, will keep to re read even though I have banned re reads When my father said, “The world is crap, it makes you want to cry.” I said to myself, “It doesn’t help crying. It doesn’t help laughing either, but it’s more fun.” The book’s central idea,” says Jonasson, “was born through real-life experience. My friend was pissed off with his neighbour who objected to something he wanted to build in his garden, so we plotted all the different ways we could really ruin his view.” Perhaps mercifully, this was mere fantasy. “Oh yes,” he assures, “revenge works best as therapy when it never leaves the planning stage.” I did have a few qualms going through the book the first being that Victor is so horrible and the second with the whole idea of Sweet Sweet Revenge Ltd as a business. That said once I remembered I was reading an irreverent book and not real life I was able to settle in and thoroughly enjoy the wild ride that is revenge.

When I had first come across Jonas Jonasson's The Hundred-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out of the Window and Disappeared, I absolutely fell in love with his writing style and the subtle humor that so easily gelled up with the world history and character's development. It wasn't much of a surprise when its sequel turned out to be equally entertaining and it didn't make me think twice when I got my hands on his latest one. Dived in immediately with a bit of high expectations and here is my take on whether it was a hit or a miss. Ernsthaft? It took a bit to get into the book, in that of nearly all the characters who appear, there is a lot of history explaining how they came to the current events in the book. When you compare it to the first book of the author, it wasn't nearly as funny at first either. It didn't have that LOL quality either throughout the book. They say an elephant never forgets. The same goes for the self-proclaimed count in Dumas’ classic adventure novel. Revenge is rarely as beautiful as when the practitioner is not in a hurry. Edmond Dantès waited 24 years. In my new novel, one of the main characters fantasises about planting a hedge next to his neighbour’s plot, with the intention of letting it to grow until it obscures the sun for the neighbour’s carrot bed. He’d have to wait 500 years, but all good things comes to those who wait. I realise the whole revenge for hire has been done before, but I thought it was a fascinating and inspired idea for a Jonas Jonasson novel. I absolutely adored the previous books by the author, so grabbed at the chance of reading Sweet Sweet Revenge Ltd.
