Is it possible Kathleen worked as a medium under duress from her family? If not duress, then might we look to the social pressures placed on children born into intense religious cultures. After all, if you live in a small world, without education, without prospects or outside perspectives, might you believe entirely in the paranormal, inured to the questionable morality of your actions? Or, did she find herself a prisoner of her own dupe, knowing she was dishonest and caring or not caring as her precocious morality allowed? We will never know, and I wrote The Spirit Engineer in such a way as to preserve Kathleen Goligher’s mystery. Still, we’re not without some detail. Such a deliciously creepy, unsettling read… a melancholic gothic triumph. Gave me all the same feelings as one of my most favourite books ever, Frankenstein' Jennifer Saint, bestselling author of Ariadne What a phenomenal novel. Immediately upon starting this, I was enveloped in the eery atmosphere of the house. With an almost tangible foreboding, we begin to meet the characters and learn that things are maybe not quite as they seem in this happy family dynamic. What surprised me was the humour. I didn’t expect William to be so witty, but within the first couple of chapters, I had laughed out loud at some of the one-liners. Part 1 sets up the spooky atmosphere perfectly, and there are multiple clues and mysteries unfolding from the very beginning.

I thought I would love this book - but it was a bit of a rollercoaster of liked it, didn't like it, liked it again and it's growing on me...The Spirit Engineer by AJ West is, as they say, something quite different. West is a former awarding-winning BBC journalist who has worked extensively in Northern Ireland. William Crawford is a family man. A man of science and one who will not be duped by these people who claim the dead converse with them, heavens no it’s nothing more than pure fantasy and delusion which people with too much imagination use as a coping mechanism when they refuse to let go of those they have lost. But when the book concerned manages to include Harry Houdini, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Titanic, the Great War, an emerging Irish nation, two real life protagonists and is set in Edwardian Belfast, it became a somewhat irresistible invitation. every client call and respond within 24 hours. Split into four parts, the first three were interesting and well written, but the fourth part was something else! Knowing that the book was based on a true story, I deliberately avoided looking into the characters before reading it and the final scenes were so explosive and hard-hitting as the truth was revealed. I could barely bring myself to read on as it suddenly dawned on me the way in which the story was heading, while at the same time I was unable to put it down. An authentic, engrossing and emotional novel.
The Spirit Engineer is fabulously written, fast-paced & palpitation inducing, particularly in the latter third of the book. For me, the ending was so brilliantly & cleverly done, it overwhelmed me so much that it reduced me to tears. Absolutely outstanding! A gripping, gothic story anchored in the political and spiritual chaos of Edwardian Belfast. Part horror, part history, The Spirit Engineer is a chilling and thought-provoking tale of exploitation, faith, deception, fraud, seances, hubris, and prejudice... West has mixed fact with fiction and shrouded it all in a gothic veil of mystery. There are some disturbing subjects and ideas to come from this book. Of course, seances and dabbling in ‘ the other side’ are not going to be easy experiences. I just loved the way you are invited to belief or not, but to experience the world of those trying to understand it all. This is barely a reflection of my conversation with Cathryn who has been generous and understanding of my creative process. I think it’s fair to say the family have been delighted to find some new evidence of Kathleen’s fascinating story but are, at the same time, surprised to discover that the kind, fun, uncomplicated woman they knew and loved was part of a foggy and emotionally-charged story of duplicity, worldwide fame, infamy, derision, adulation and, ultimately, suicide.
