About this deal

Wherever possible, machine holing is preferable. Holing by hand should only be considered when a small amount of slates need re-holing for repairs or when a hole needs to be repositioned in-situ.

Responsible producers will supply a health and safety product data sheet relating to working with natural slate. This will cover all matters relevant to the prevention of accident or injury in the workplace. Clenergy provides a 10-year product warranty for your peace of mind. It has been independently tested by the Building Research Establishment (BRE) and has been awardee Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) certification. Clenergy SolarPro ComponentsIn centre-nailed slating, the gauge is the spacing at which the battens are fixed to the rafters, trusses or counter-battens to provide the required head-lap. The margin is the exposed length of the slate measured in the same direction as the gauge. The lap and margin will be the same.

There are two type of Slate Hook, an over batten type and a drive in type. The use of over batten type is very limited with the majority being drive in type (shown in picture). When hook fixing, additional nail fixings should be used at eaves, ridges and top abutments and, to prevent lateral drift, at verges, hips, valleys and side abutments. The British Standard Code of Practice (BS 5534) specifies two ways of installing slates: nailing or hook fixing. These fasteners fix the slates to either batten, which is by far the most common English method, or to sarking board, which is commonly used in exposed areas in Scotland. In Southern England, the most common slate size is 500 x 250mm, and in the North of England and Scotland it is 400 x 250mm. Slate head lap There are a number of advantages and disadvantages which one should consider before using natural slate. On the plus side, natural slate has an aesthetic appeal and will stay looking good for many years. As such it may not need replacing. Other types of roofing slates such as concrete will lose colour and not wear so well visually, making slate more cost effective. Ventilation is also important. Roof space ventilation is the most effective and economic method of keeping harmful condensation to a minimum, and it can be achieved by providing eaves through to the ridge ventilation. Ventilation also depends on the construction method used, that can be ‘cold roof’ or ‘warm roof’. A warm roof has the insulation at rafter level whereas a cold roof has insulation at the ceiling level.

Roof space ventilation is the most effective and economic method of keeping harmful condensation to a minimum, and it can be achieved by providing eaves through to the ridge ventilation. Aesthetics – the nails are hidden beneath the rows of slate above, whereas hook fixings are visible. A building’s environment and the weather conditions to which it is exposed to are essential aspects when designing a roof. The design and technical details will not be the same for a project located in a sunny, dry region to a rainy region. The main factors to consider here are exposure to wind and rain. So after experimenting with all manners of ideas and devices, Jimmy solved the slate roof repair problem with the invention of the Hallhook. Centre-nailed, double-lap slates are fixed with two nails close to the side-edge of the slate and positioned immediately above the slates below.SolarRoof Pro is designed for optimal heat dissipation. It sounds counter-intuitive but solar panels like to run cool, power output will fall off above 25°C. This is why we prefer “on-roof “ to “in-roof” mounting. SolarRoof Pro is designed to allow cooling airflow around the PV modules to keep them at optimum efficiency.

Not all our competitors’ roof hooks are stainless steel and most competitor aluminium components are not anodised as standard (if at all). With Clenergy you can depend on a durable, strong, maintenance-free solar installation with an extended lifespan beyond that of the PV panels themselves. Founded in 2004, Essex based Samac Fixings is a market leading distributor known for supplying nails, screws, rivets, fixings and slate hooks to a variety of specialist shops all over the United Kingdom. While they originally only offered nails, Samac Fixings currently boasts a wide range of nearly 6000 high quality products that are a favourite among merchants, builders, and contractors. When opting for hook fixing method, it is important to know that hook fixings may not be suitable for large slates, which experience a greater wind uplift than smaller slates, and for pitches above 75º or below 25º. Slate hooks are available with straight or crimped shanks. However, crimped shanks reduce the capillary action and should be used for roof pitches below 30º. The method of using stainless steel point slate hooks is very cost effective which is why it’s an increasingly popular choice in the United Kingdom as well as across Europe. Because the slate is supported at four different points, these hooks can be used in even the most exposed locations without sacrificing resistance to wind uplift. The location is important as well, as it will impact the exposure. For example, buildings positioned on slopes, hills or coastal areas are classified as high exposure. The head of the slate should lay approximately halfway on to the batten (i.e. 25mm on to the batten) leaving 25mm to nail into. A clearance of 6–12mm is recommended.
