About this deal

Enter Cato - won't get into how he winds up in Britain - don't want to spoil the surprise - and you have all the ingredients for a Macro/Cato adventure. Just the two of them? No. It seems there are a number of retired legionaries in the ancient Roman equivalent of a retirement village and they aren't ready to quite give up either and fade peacefully into the night. Eventually, you have the obligatory battle scenes, but it's nothing like legions fighting off the barbarians and the like. Add in the help of a native British tribe and it's still kind of tame. So if you're expecting a lot of blood and guts, you won't find it - there is some but its minor in comparison to earlier adventures. A really enjoyable read, which although it could work as a standalone novel I feel is far better read as part of the series, with so many recurring and developing characters and many historical references.

Scarrow, Simon (2021). The emperor's exile. London. ISBN 978-1-4722-5845-8. I think the biggest mistake Simon Scarrow made when writing these books was to make Macro as old as he was at the start, he could’ve easily made him five years younger and it would’ve made no difference to the story or series as a whole. It doesn’t lose the star because of that, but it finally came to a head in this book when Macro departs about a third of the way through to see out his retirement in Britannia, and was obviously gutting as Macro is the best character!

For someone who is routinely trotted out as one of the best authors of Roman fiction, it surprises me just how bland and un-engaging a novel Scarrow puts out. Like most light historical novels, this is the kind of book best read on public transport or other long journeys. I have read many more exciting, envigorating, complex and dark historical novels, and whilst The Eagle's Conquest is not really on par with those kinds of books, if you take it as what it is, it is certainly an enjoyable read.

Narcissus: Claudius's Chief Secretary and effectively Prime Minister of the whole Empire. He recruits Macro and Cato for "special" tasks around the Empire, promising them rich rewards for success, but making it clear that their lives are of little value to him or the Empire. As ever, the level of historical research is astounding and the pace is frenetic. The ending had me gasping and the twenty-second book cannot come soon enough! This misfortune to Queen Boudica will set in motion a series of events that will result in the eventual begin of the revolt against the Roman oppressor, with as the main culprit of this oppression the Procurator in Londinium who's called, Decianus, with Macro as a late witness to these cruel atrocities towards Queen Boudica and her daughters, and thus Macro's world of peace at the Colony at Camulodunum will eventually turn into a hellish place of war and death, while Cato is one of the officers in Governor's Suetonius's army to conquer and annihilate the Druid stronghold of Mona. Their next campaign will be the invasion of Britannia with the Roman army, until in Britannia they will stumble into a conspiracy to overthrow the Emperor. The story is well know and I won't repeat it here for feel of spoiling it for the reader. Needless to say, both Cato and Macro are involved in some of their deadliest challenges yet.

Ook dit boek kreeg mij weer op het puntje van mijn stoel. Het boek, sterker nog de serie heeft voor elk wat wils. There is a good amount of plotting and intrigue as well, which is fitting for a novel set in this Roman era. I found this to be a compelling part of the read. FBI Special Agent Rose Blake has more than an increasingly distant husband and an Asperger’s teenage son to cope with. She is still recovering seven months on from an investigation that went horrifically wrong. Simon Scarrow". Headline Publishing Group, home of bestselling fiction and non-fiction books and ebooks. 28 January 2019 . Retrieved 4 January 2020.There is a desperation as the Roman Army have to crush all in their wake. Some underestimated and some not so much. If you enjoy history and the thriller genre this should definitely be on your list to read. Entry #20 in Simon Scarrow's Macro and Cato series, which means there's been approximately one entry per year. Mi primer Scarrow. No me acuerdo por qué lo metí al "to read", creo que lo recomendó alguien y...bueno, bien, se lee de forma grata, hay mucha acción, mucho diálogo y la trama tiene su interés. Ahí gana las estrellas. Asked by the Edinburgh Book Review about the inspiration behind his interest in the Roman era, Scarrow said, "Firstly, great Latin teachers – Gordon Rodway and then Reg Nash, who inspired a love of the language and more enduringly a fascination with Roman history and culture. Secondly, when I was growing up in the seventies swords and sandals epics seemed to be on the TV regularly. Not to mention the brilliant I, Claudius". [4]
