About this deal

Special-purpose options include label printers, portable printers, and dedicated and near-dedicated photo printers. (Even among specialty printers, 3D printers are a special case, and beyond the scope of this discussion.)

For everyday printing, store-brand 20-pound weight paper will usually serve nicely. However, you'll often get better looking output if you step up to a higher-quality paper. For lasers, as well as for inkjet text and graphic printing, that means a heavier weight, and possibly a brighter white level. For photos on inkjets, it means getting matte presentation paper or photo paper. Getting photo or matte paper that's the same brand as your printer will usually be the best choice; printer manufacturers design ink and paper to work together and often offer a variety of presentation and photo papers. The problem with USB is that the labeler must always be tethered to another device, making it more difficult to move the printer around. In addition, printing devices that connect solely via USB generally limit you to printing from only the one PC they're connected to, unless you take the time to set up something to act as a print server. (You can set Windows, for example, to share any USB-connected printer, so other PCs on the network can use it.) If paper is jammed, turn off the printer and allow the printer head to cool down. Open the cover and ensure that the rubber is clean. If dirty, use alcohol swab to clean. Allow the area to dry off before turning the printer on.The options available in a printer's preferences and properties will depend on the printer model and the driver it requires for installation.

Many printer manufacturers now offer ink subscriptions, so new ink shows up at your door when you need it. If that's available for your model, it can often be the best way to go. Should you buy cheap paper? What about recycled paper?

Do not use the printer if you find any irregularities as these could result in fire or electrocution. On the other hand, laser printers are more versatile. They are great for printing documents at fast speeds with decent running costs. Some models can also print color documents and photos. Can thermal printers print color? If you need more than one type of label, you'll need to also guess how much of each type you'll use. But the basic approach remains the same. Some thermal printers can only use one type of paper (usually the manufacturer’s), while others are more versatile. Try to choose a printer that can use different types of paper so you can buy affordable and high-quality paper. How do you clean a thermal printer? Most major printer companies now provide mobile apps so you can snap a photo with your phone and print it out directly, without needing to transfer it to a computer first. Small-format photo printers often support Bluetooth for connecting mobile devices and more. A few printers can connect to a mobile device for printing via Near-Field Communication (NFC) merely by tapping the phone or tablet to a particular spot on the printer, but the NFC fad seems to be fading.

Like many other label printers from different manufacturers, the Brother Cube Plus is restricted to Brother’s proprietary TZr tapes, but we can’t really complain about their quality, though they’re a bit costly.Beyond questions of technology and output type, there are several more finely grained categories of printer. Thermal printers typically last anywhere from 6 to 9 months depending on the quality of the printer and paper. However, keep in mind that they require proper care.

Printers have reached the point where improvements are infrequent and incremental, so buying a printer that’s a few years old isn’t going to mean sacrificing any groundbreaking technology. That said, if you buy a refurbished or used printer, get it from a trustworthy source, make sure it's been recertified by the manufacturer, and look for a reasonable warranty and return period. Here's what to know before buying refurbished electronics. Linux and Chromebook support is somewhat rare, while mobile operating systems are supported in wireless thermal printer models only. Paper The Epson LabelWorks LW-PX800 delivers solid performance as a heavy-duty standalone label printer. It's a desktop model meant for the office, with the ability to share the printer over a network and connect to mobile devices. Plus, it's covered by a lifetime warranty, and it comes with both Mac and PC label-printing apps.

Rollo's X1038 model printer utilises direct thermal technology to print without ink or toner. The printer is said to look more like a stapler than a traditional desktop or roll printer. Unlike other printers that use Bluetooth, you can connect multiple devices at the same time, which also encourages multitasking among your team members. What’s more, the printer pairs seamlessly with Windows, Mac, and Linux, but unfortunately, it doesn’t work with Chromebooks or mobile devices. It can be connected via USB, so there’s no Bluetooth or Wi-Fi connectivity here. Thermal printers are designed for heavy-duty commercial printing, so they should last for at least a few years before they need maintenance or replacement. As a general rule of thumb, a thermal printer may last anywhere from 4 to 8 years, depending on your printing volumes and the printer’s model. Generally, business models use laser or similar technology (more on that shortly) and are geared toward text, or text and graphics, while home printers are generally inkjets and favor photos and graphics. Within each printer category, quality for each kind of output varies widely. Some business printers can handle all three types well enough for in-house printing of brochures and other marketing materials, for example.
