About this deal

As resident artist at iconic music venue, the Half Moon Putney, I use reportage journalism to tell a specific story documenting the creative energy of performing live. My artworks record a particular moment in time by hand, just as a photo journalist would use a camera to record them. Set some rules. Again, this will help to keep your project focussed. Rules can take the form of decisions about what medium to use, whether you will use as sketchbook or loose sheets, which orientation you will be working in etc. The rules you set will help to unify the drawings in your project.

This course is for anyone interested in illustrating for books, or who has an interest in narrative illustration, or childrens books. All levels are welcome, but being comfortable with drawing is important, as drawing will be featured heavily in the projects. I’m not trying to scare myself, or to compete with frontline photographers. Often that question comes with an assumption I must be doing it for an adrenaline rush – I don’t really see it like that. The inspiration comes from sitting down with someone I would otherwise never have met, and having a connection with them. I think the understanding is pretty universal, and a really nice by-product of drawing outside is to have conversations with people about that.I think it's very heartening actually. UAL Enterprising Alumni Network Event: Purpose-driven and social enterprise from UAL Alumni - Meet the Speakers Restrict your location. Narrow your focus. An in-depth study of a small area will be more successful than casting your net too wide by trying to capture everything but only scratching the surface.Courtroom artists are responsible for capturing the unfolding events during court proceedings. Artists play a vital role in visually reporting legal cases as photographers are not permitted. In some countries, such as the UK, artists are not allowed to draw inside the courtroom and must sketch from memory after they leave the room!

In Kharkiv, an eastern town under sustained Russian shelling, Butler met a surgeon and was able to visit a hospital treating severely injured civilians. Matt Booker Drawings from four months in India at the International Institute of Fine Arts in Modinagar, Delhi, the Himalayas and Rajasthan. I think there's something actually really radical about drawing, that it provides an alternative way of understanding a location and being on location to the dominant one which is photographic. It's much more visceral, it's much more contemplative, it's much more grounded.. John Berger wrote a lot about drawing and the politics of drawing. He wrote about drawing in Palestine. Drawing people created a shared vocabulary and he talked about those people whose houses had been bulldozed in the occupied Palestinian territories and who used drawing to assert their memories of the houses that had gone. I'd suggest you can't do that with a camera, you can't do that with a photograph. Is all your work done on location now, or do you still find yourself answering commercial briefs by drawing from photographs? The reason for drawing is not to try and capture battle scenes or explosions, it’s really just an excuse to sit with people and in a completely disarming way listen to them tell their story,” he says. Reportage art has re-emerged at a time when we are being bombarded by an endless stream of often confusing images with no explanation of who made them and for what purpose. There is evidence that as a consequence there is a reduction in attention span, as well as visual memory - there is also evidence that we are losing our ability to trust what we see in the media. In reportage the artist is always on hand. An illustration is an executive summary of ideas and the world we see. What the reportage artist saw they always aim to share, but they also standby what they have stated, and this is the key to building trust and social cohesion. https://youtu.be/1KsL_W4Dccg Video can’t be loaded because JavaScript is disabled: Veronica Lawlor: Caught In The Act (https://youtu.be/1KsL_W4Dccg)
