About this deal

This is a short-vine plant; grow as a vine, but dont expect it to get too tall. Great for an extended harvest in short-season areas! This unusual variety has a large hollow seed cavity - ideal for stuffing like a pepper, or just use as normal - and is one of the prettiest tomatoes we have grown, with a true peach-blush on the skin. Highly productive.

For us it grows as a fairly short vine, to about 4 or 5ft, with slightly flattened 3" fruit and an excellent flavour. Limited availability. Green Zebra is a very special tomato, created in 1983 by Tom Wagner of 'Tater Mater Seeds' - a flavour-obsessed tomato and potato breeder who has worked all his life creating new varieties. Not all the tomatoes on given plant are fully fasciated. Some are simply lobed, almost pumpkin-like in shape. When several fascinated tomatoes mature in a cluster, though, the result can be … well, almost scary! We do not claim survey results to be statistically significant due to the variation among growing conditions and the absence of control variables. With that said, we found survey responses to be generally consistent. Keep in mind that results are the opinion of those surveyed and the editors of TheDallasGarden.com, not a scientific study. We’re pleased to offer what may well be the best tasting tomato there is, named after tomato breeder Dr Carolyn Mayle. Reisetomate plants have sections like an orange that may be hand pulled from the main bunch. I have seen similar anomalies in my pear and slicing tomatoes, but these were just one-offs that happened due to genetic hiccups in the development of the fruit. The goal of the Dallas Tomato Trials is to determine the best heirloom tomatoes for growing in North Texas through real-world testing. The first time I saw a reisetomate tomato I thought of radioactivity and mutant cell division. This may be a dismal projection but the appearance was so out of my realm of experience when I think “ tomato“ that it threw my brain for a loop. Reisetomate tomato plants are ancient plants in the nightshade family, closely aligned with peppers and eggplants. They purportedly originated in early Peruvian civilization, but their unique appearance and tangy flavor put them sharply on today’s dinner menus. Reisetomate Tomato History

The reisetomate heirloom tomato fruits will all produce these highly clustered, yet single, tomatoes. An Improved ‘Reisetomate’? ‘Godzilla’: a ‘Reisetomate’ with a more classic tomato taste. Source: store.tomatofest.com Many North Texas gardeners swear that growing tomatoes in fall delivers much better results than spring growing. To really put the 2020 varieties to the test, several varieties were selected for fall growing. Passed to us via Owen Bridge of Annapolis Seeds. They ripen from the orangey colour in the photos to a deeper red-pink, and make large number of fruit over a long season.

She wrote in Czech: "I have a variety of breast tomato from my great-grandmother and I have been growing it since 2005. Before, we have grown it in our family for another 35 years (maybe more). I saw it with my great-grandmother and we had it at home in the garden. It is yellow, and had an interesting shape - I & my brother as a child, liked to eat them raw, or with lettuce, and they can be hollowed out, stuffed and cooked."This is another fantastic tomato given to us by Marek of Permaseminka Seeds, who has been researching and collecting old european tomato varieties for several years now. He thinks it is one of the best in his collection, and after our trials in 2020, we agree. It is productive and has a great flavour, even though (as with most breast-shaped tomatoes) the original Czech name is a bit dodgy. A great new variety from our 2018 Early Tomato Trials. We chose it from a collection of northern-adapted varieties as it sounded amazing - not only a rich flavour, but cold-resisitant; the parent plants were chosen after a hard frost killed off all the other baby tomatoes being grown at the time. Sow your tomato seeds in early Spring to Summer – all year round in subtropical and tropical areas. The key thing about this one is that the vines are not very tall - about 4ft - so great for the edge of the polytunnel or in a small greenhouse. And it fruits really quite early, making generously-set trusses of large round red tomatoes (tennis-ball sized). We require this information to understand your needs and provide you with a better service, and in particular for the following reasons:

And it too is true to type from seed. Another excellent ex-USSR variety from Andrei Barawovski in the Ukraine, this was one of the best tasting in our 2018 trials. Our fantastic new tomato, sent by Cliff Jenkins from seed he got in Bulgaria. Huge - really huge ( over half a kg)- glowing pink fruit with a truly excellent flavour. A perfect balance of acid and sweet, with a subtle smoky undertone; just perfect - this is the one we all rush to take home to cook with after deseeding. This big round tomato from the 1920's comes from a cross of 'Ponderosa' & 'St Louis' in an effort to create the ultimate salad tomato. Our Seed Club: Due to ridiculous seed laws here in the UK, many of our fantastic vegetable seeds cannot in theory be supplied to the public, because they are not on the UK National List of permitted vegetable varieties1 But we do supply them to members of our seed club.

The name translates as 'ugly, from the wide river' - well they may not be the prettiest of tomatoes, but in this case looks definitely aren't everything! they keep well. So not for salad use, but excellent to make a really hearty tomato sauce or soup, and heavy-cropping. The vines don't grow too tall for us (so good at the shorter edge of a greenhouse) but make a good crop of really nice rounded red tomatoes for a long season.
