The exact details of the origins of the Raggedy Ann doll and related stories, which were created by Johnny Gruelle, are not specifically known, although numerous myths and legends about the doll's origins have been widely repeated. [4] Gruelle biographer and Raggedy Ann historian Patricia Hall notes that the dolls have "found themselves at the center of several legend cycles—groups of stories that, while containing kernels of truth, are more myth than they are history. What makes this even more intriguing is that fact that Johnny Gruelle, either unwittingly or with the great sense of humor he was known for, initiated many of these legends, a number of which are continuously repeated as the factual history of Raggedy Ann and Andy." [5]

Play Ball: [68] While visiting Marcella's cousin's house, Raggedy Ann and Andy are asked to participate in a baseball game, but Andy discovers he's not a great player. The Sleepover: When Marcella chooses Sunny Bunny to accompany her on a sleepover, the rabbit worries that her friend's toys won't like him. Sew the head and body, leaving open two holes in the sides for the arms to fit in, and the bottom open. The Warrens' story of the doll served as inspiration for the Annabelle doll character depicted in The Conjuring Universe, a film series that includes the following: Annabelle (2014), Annabelle: Creation (2017), and Annabelle Comes Home (2019). The producers did not use the likeness of Raggedy Ann, partially due to potential trademark issues and partially to make the doll's appearance more unsettling for a horror film; its appearance has been described as a "terrifying porcelain doll that is disfigured and immediately menacing". [10] The character makes its first appearance in James Wan 's The Conjuring (2013) [11] and additionally makes brief appearances in his sequel The Conjuring 2 (2016) [12] and Michael Chaves's The Curse of La Llorona (2019) and The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It (2021), as well as in the DC Extended Universe films Aquaman (2018) and Shazam! (2019), respectively directed by Wan and Annabelle: Creation director David F. Sandberg. [13] The doll also appears in Shazam! Fury of the Gods, also directed by Sandberg.

Bubbles Goes to the Fair: [70] Bubbles the Clown practices juggling in hopes of winning a prize at the Raggedy Land Fair, but he forgets to bring along his juggling balls. a b Patricia Hall (1993). How could something as cute and innocent looking as the Raggedy Ann doll come from such a dark and foreboding history? Written by Nika Hazelton; illustrated by Johnny Gruelle, Worth Gruelle, and Justin Gruelle. See Hall, Johnny Gruelle, Creator of Raggedy Ann and Andy, p. 154. Little Bear's Problem: While visiting the circus with Marcella, Raggedy Ann & Andy meet Little Bear, who's dismayed that he doesn't get to spend much time with his parents. The dolls teach him that his folks are bringing joy to others, so Little Bear decides to concentrate on his own future career as a performer. The Raggedy Ann doll was inducted into the National Toy Hall of Fame in Rochester, New York, on March 27, 2002. Raggedy Andy was inducted 5 years later on November 8, 2007. Annabelle is an allegedly- haunted Raggedy Ann doll, housed in the now closed occult museum of the paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren. Annabelle was moved there after supposed hauntings in 1970. A character based on the doll is one of the antagonists that appear in The Conjuring Universe. Hall further explains that according to an oft-repeated myth, Gruelle's daughter, Marcella, brought from her grandmother's attic a faceless cloth doll on which the artist drew a face, and that Gruelle suggested that Marcella's grandmother sew a shoe button for a missing eye. Hall says the date of this supposed occurrence is given as early as 1900 and as late as 1914, with the locale variously given as suburban Indianapolis, Indiana, downtown Cleveland, Ohio, or rural Connecticut. [6] More likely, as Gruelle's wife, Myrtle, reported, it was her husband who retrieved a long-forgotten, homemade rag doll from the attic of his parents' Indianapolis home sometime around the turn of the twentieth century before the couple's daughter was born. Although the incident is unconfirmed, Myrtle Gruelle recalled, "There was something he wanted from the attic. While he was rummaging around for it, he found an old rag doll his mother had made for his sister. He said then that the doll would make a good story." [5] Myrtle Gruelle also indicated that her husband "kept [the doll] in his mind until we had Marcella. He remembered it when he saw her play [with] dolls.... He wrote the stories around some of the things she did. He used to get ideas from watching her." [5]

Ask most people about Annabelle the doll and the chances are, they will have heard of the demonic toy. In the year 1970, 25 year old nurse Dierdre Bernard was given the large Raggedy Ann doll from her mother as a quirky birthday gift. Bernard lived with her roommate Lara Clifton and Clifton’s partner, Cal Rendall. Soon after the toy was placed in the apartment shared by the three young nurses, they began to notice strange things, like the doll would be found in a different position to how they had left it. Soon, they began finding notes around their home too, written in child-like handwriting. In Portland, Massachusetts, a 40 year old mother and her 12 year old daughter were brutally killed at the hands of the man they knew and loved as husband and father. Douglas P Adams, 37, had lived with his wife and their child Caroline in their New England home for many years — few who knew the family would have ever dreamt of the nightmare that would become a hard, cold reality when local news reports confirmed the gristly details. a b c d e Patricia Hall (1999). Tragically, Marcella Gruelle contracted diphtheria and died at the age of 13. After this blow, family friends described Gruelle as “possessed, with a heavy countenance” and that the only thing he could bear to have near him as a reminder of his daughter was the Raggedy Ann doll. Unlike the movie, the doll's owner never saw what appeared to be the ghost of a different seven-year-old girl named Annabelle Higgins, who in the film grows up to start a satanic cult. In the 2017 prequel, we learn that Annabelle Higgins is actually the fictional orphan Janice, who became possessed by the demon attached to the doll. Janice escaped, was adopted by the Higgins family, and changed her name to Annabelle after the doll, which in turn was named Annabelle after the doll maker's daughter, who died at age seven when she was hit by a car. The real Annabelle doll (right) was actually a Raggedy Ann Doll, not the porcelain doll shown in the Annabelle movie (left).

Although the female members of Gruelle's family may have made a small number of initial versions of the Raggedy Ann doll in Norwalk, Connecticut, to help market the related books, Gruelle soon established a merchandising agreement with P. F. Volland Company, his primary publisher, to begin commercially manufacturing, selling, and promoting a mass-produced version of the doll.
