It serves well in the bedroom and kitchen, though, with two alarms and a kitchen timer useful additions, along with a snooze function that is activated with a touch of the handle. Verdict The sound is crisp and clear with enough detail for you to be able to appreciate complex music. There’s a good level of bass, striking the right balance between being boomy and tinny.
But it’s precisely because that phrase ‘warm, fuzzy bottom end’ has gone through our minds that alarm bells ring. Such a term would never have entered our heads with the Evokes D2 and F4. It’s a nice sound, sure – but is it ‘Pure’ enough? The D4 won’t go ear-shatteringly loud either – a trait that it does share with many of its stablemates. It’s more than capable of dealing with a bedroom or kitchen, but don’t expect it to be your main source of tunes for a party. By far, this is one of the most attractive radios that we’ve seen from Pure to date. While options like the Pure Avalon are sleek and modern, the Evoke brings a touch of retro elegance into its aesthetic appeal. Clearly, we’re getting an updated version of some of the traditional tuner radios that you used to see in homes throughout the 70s and 80s. Built-in Bluetooth lets you choose your favourite music, streaming service or internet radio station and play it direct from your phone or tablet without trailing wires.It is, as we feared: the D4 falls between two stools – we would trade up to the F4 for its internet functions, or down to the D2 for its purer sound. First impressions are good. Take it out of the box and you’re greeted with a nicely finished unit that's solid but isn’t too heavy, and there’s a credit-card remote control that is a classier effort than most. Navigating around the stations is easy too – turn the ‘select’ button to find a new station and push it in to go to the new choice.

The built-in Bluetooth means that you can choose to stream music from your laptop or phone. What’s more, the simple CD player in the front of the device means that you can continue to make the most of your album collection. The D2 rings out clear as a bell, highlighting in particular that all-important midrange. The D4 sounds just a touch veiled in comparison – the vocals in songs are harder to make out, the spoken word is just not quite as clear. Set-up is straightforward: pull up the telescopic aerial, plug in the juice, push the power button and the unit will start to auto-tune DAB and FM. There aren’t many products out there that combine an FM/DAB radio with Bluetooth and a CD player, but the Evoke C-D4 manages to do so in style. We’d suggest upping your budget if that is the case, or if you don’t absolutely need a one-box solution, trump both with an all-in-one system such as Denon’s Award-winning D-M40DAB. If you’re looking for style, reliable performance and excellent functionality, then it’s hard to go wrong with the Pure radio brand. Like all the radios in Pure’s Evoke range, the C-D4 has a very stylish design. It looks and feels well made and high-quality. The CD player is front-loading, so you slide discs into it. It can play CD-RW discs as well as regular CDs and CD-Rs, and it also has repeat and shuffle options.There are a few minor downsides to this device, such as the fact that you can’t always get a great connection with the remote control unless you’re standing right in front of it – which negates the point. Additionally, though the sound of this DAB radio CD player is exceptional, it can be a little heavy on the bass when taken straight out of the box. You might need to adjust some of the settings before you get the sound balance that works for you. The Pure Evoke C-D4 is a good buy if you’re looking for something that is more of a compact hi-fi rather than just a radio. It’s quite expensive, but has an aesthetically pleasing design and would look great in the bedroom or the kitchen.
