About this deal

We appreciate the convenient open-top design, which allows for a spill-free filling process. After removing the lid, there was no limescale or mold buildup of any kind, and the fragrance of the essential oils kept the device smelling fresh as well. We didn’t love that the water line was difficult to see, but that was a minor issue. Though this humidifier may not have the bells and whistles of more advanced models, it certainly gets the job done. The Babymoov gets full marks for clear instructions and easy setup. The touchscreen controls make it a doddle to monitor the ambient humidity and temperature, then adjust the settings as required. Some come with their own water tank while others are water bottle humidifiers. Humidifiers with their own tanks tend to be bulkier, however all you have to do is add water and you’re ready to go. Those needing water bottles are lighter and easier to travel with, you just have to make sure you have a water bottle that correctly fits the humidifier. 6. Noise Level

A compressor dehumidifier is almost like a mini-fridge that cools the air and converts it into water that you can pour away,” says Ryan Kandola, a dehumidifier expert from Aircon Centre, “whereas desiccants take the air and run it over a rotating flywheel which absorbs the moisture, before heating it so the wheel doesn’t get saturated.” How do you know when you need a dehumidifier? Consider how long you need your humidifier to run for and also the climate where you’ll be. Another thing that’s important is the size of the water tank. If you’re in a very dry climate the humidifier will use more water than it would in a more humid area. In this case it wouldn’t matter if it has a 10-hour run time if the water tank isn’t big enough to hold enough water. 3. Humidity Output If you have a small space that’s prone to damp air, like a kitchen or a bathroom, you need a dehumidifier that’s compact and quiet. Standing 22cm high and weighing little more than a bag of sugar, unlike some dehumidifiers The ProBreeze is easy to move around and won’t stand out like a sore thumb once it’s in place. The cool mist begins to appear within a few seconds of turning on the humidifier. It features two different settings—one for continuous mist and one for intermittent mist, meaning 10 seconds on and 10 seconds off. It also features an auto shut-off setting for when the water runs out. Aside from the above features, this humidifier has very few adjustable settings, which can be a good or bad thing depending on your needs. The intuitive one-button control makes it a great choice for a guest bedroom or a car, but it also means that your control over the mist output is limited. In reality, it’s probably a little too powerful for my needs, instead I’d recommend it to anyone with large, open-plan rooms in their houses or a big house with open doors, where it can sit in a hallway. While the power of 290 Watts means it only costs around 8p per hour, there are still lower energy options on this list that anyone with a smaller house or flat should consider.

Tabletop humidifiers are designed to humidify a single room. They’re lightweight and easy to carry around, and usually have a removable water container. Want to make the air they breathe safer and free from irritants? Think about our huge range of air purifiers. They ensure good air quality inside your home by filtering irritants present in the air and trap allergens—including mould spores, pollen, and pet dander. Explore our range to find designs to suit all budgets plus options which also work as humidifiers and fans.

Also consider the size of the humidifier you buy. Smaller models are easier to move, while larger ones cover a bigger area. Here are the three main sizes: Without a bulky container to hold water, this compact, battery-powered option is perfect for travelling, especially for trips to colder, drier destinations. When the humidity drops too high or too low, it can contribute to asthma, allergies, dry skin, and more, which is why managing the moisture levels in your home is so important to improve air quality. A humidifier helps to keep an optimal humidity level in your home, and can even provide a better night’s rest by improving sleeping conditions for adults and babies alike.

You only have to fill up the tank once a day and it’s a doddle to clean. The release of mist is much more consistent than with some cheaper machines (and even some more expensive ones), but be warned that the mist can cause dampness on fabrics, so keep it away from curtains and furnishings. That aside, this humidifier is hard to beat for the price. Ultrasonic humidifiers are known for providing a quiet mist, and this sleek and simple model received high marks across the board in our testing. The two-in-one design functions as both a diffuser and humidifier, enabling you to create your own at-home spa experience with essential oils. We were particularly impressed by the humidifier’s quiet operation during testing—we couldn’t hear it at all when we were just over a foot away from it. One thing to keep in mind, though, is that we didn’t find this humidifier to be very effective on the low setting. It was very effective on the high setting though, increasing the humidity levels by an average of 39%, so we recommend only using it on the high setting. Humidity refers to the amount of water vapor in the air and can have varying effects based on how high or low it is. "High humidity causes the air to feel warmer than it actually is and can cause you to overheat," says Carver. "It also encourages the growth of dust mites and mold, which can trigger asthma and/or allergies. They both thrive in high humidity levels above 50%. Low humidity can cause your skin, eyes (including your eyelids), nose, and lips to dry out. It can also result in a dry, sore throat, as well as worsen eczema and asthma." On the other hand, using a humidifier too often can present its own problems when humidity levels become too high. As mentioned, 40% is optimum; but indoor humidity levels between 30% and 50% are considered fine for health and comfort. Lower than 30% is too dry, and risks causing short-term health problems and exacerbating long-term problems. Higher than 50 to 60% creates a welcoming environment for bacteria, dust mites and mould – not to mention a musty smell. If your humidity levels regularly rise above 60%, particularly in the winter, you might want to think about investing in a dehumidifier. What features should I look for in a humidifier?

Homedics TotalComfort Ultrasonic Humidifier: If you’re looking for a budget-friendly yet effective option, this simple model was able to increase the humidity of our space by 26% from two feet away on the highest setting. We did take off points for the confusing instructions and the messy refill process, which resulted in water seeping out. A pro-tip from our parents’ era is to place a glass of water on the bedside table, in hopes that it’ll improve the humidity of an air-conditioned room. Even if it helps a wee bit, chances are you still woke up the next morning as dry as a shrivelled leaf. Despite being one of the smaller humidifiers we tested, this unit stood out as one of the highest performers in terms of output. The 3-in-1 device functions as a humidifier, essential oil diffuser, and color-changing night light all in one, adding a soothing touch to any bedtime routine. Its compact and sleek design blends in well with any surroundings, allowing for easy integration into bedroom decor without drawing too much attention.

What types of portable humidifiers are there?

The humidifier includes a convenient cover that lifts for easy refilling, though we observed that the cover, while intended to be helpful, was prone to leakage. It also features a 360-degree rotating nozzle, which allows you to aim the mist at the desired angle. Plus, it’s filterless, so you don’t have to worry about replacing or cleaning the filter. Dehumidifiers are the best way to reduce humidity in your home and many are cost effective and energy efficient. They range from bathroom dehumidifiers to compact ones for your car and even ones you can control from your mobile phone. Small dehumidifiers are ideal for flats or smaller spaces, while the bigger models can dehumidify a five-bedroom property or a small business space.

Cleaning your humidifier at least once a week is imperative to prevent bacteria growth that can be expelled into the air. To make this process easier, look for a unit that's easy to disassemble and a water tank that's easy to clean. Rather than being a compressor or a desiccant, the ProBreeze instead uses peltier technology, similar to that used in some mini fridges, to cool water vapour into water. It’s much quieter than the other methods. To combat this, you can switch to filtered or distilled water, or opt for an evaporative humidifier, which uses a filter to trap minerals before the water is released into the air. "Using filtered water and changing the water daily will also help prevent mold or bacteria from growing in your humidifier," says Carver. Look for one which draws less than 360 Watts and you will never spend more than 10p per hour. It’s often much less on lower power settings. Dehumidifiers are generally cheap to run. What size dehumidifier do I need? It’s simply a matter of setting the desired humidity level and the unit will do the rest. What you will need to do is empty the water tank from time to time. Where should you place a dehumidifier?Humidifiers often have a choice of continuous or intermittent spray patterns, giving you a non-stop stream for six to 12 hours, or a longer running time with regular pauses. You may also get additional heat, mist or power levels, depending on the technology used. One major con: After culturing the tank, we discovered that this humidifier held the most bacteria of any we tested. Still, considering its strong performance in all testing categories, we think this smart option would be a valuable addition to your household, as long as you’re willing to clean it regularly. There are 7 different colour modes you can choose from as well to switch things up nightly – including red, purple, green and yellow. Gift this to your little one as a fun night light, or get one for yourself – no one’s too old to love a little stargazing . Domestic dehumidifiers can extract up to 25 litres of water per day. We have largely focused on 20l models since these are the most popular for domestic use. For larger spaces, damper environments or colder temperatures, choose something more powerful. (Or vice versa for smaller spaces.) Beyond the basic humidification functions, you’ll find oodles of clever optional features such as antibacterial UV lights, digital control panels, spill-proof tanks, and air-cleaning “pre-filters” that are designed to trap pet hair, dust and even some pollen. Perhaps the most important features in a humidifier are the following:
