About this deal

Choosing the perfect off-white paint depends on the type of light the room receives and what direction it’s facing. When decorating north-facing rooms, avoid off-whites with a green or grey base as these will make the room seem darker. Instead, choose yellow-based, creamy neutrals to bounce as much light around the room as possible. Farrow & Ball’s ‘ White Tie' and ‘ Tallow’ are perfect tones for this. When choosing the best white for your ceiling consider which option will coordinate best with your home's interiors, wall colours and furnishings,' explains Dominic Myland. 'Again pay attention to the undertones. Mylands Pure White No. 1 and Whitehall No.9 are great options available in our Marble Matt Emulsions. This is suitable for all interior walls and ceilings, including high traffic areas as they can be re-touched, wiped, washed or even scrubbed with no effect on colour or sheen.' Because it’s water-based, this paint will also never yellow with age, making it a perfect paint for any areas that might not get a lot of sunlight, such as skirting boards behind furniture and the inside of cupboards. It also comes in a great range of colours, although mostly pastel or neutral shades. I don’t use white paint on walls very often but I do regularly use it for skirtings, doors, windows and ceilings. My go-to white paint for skirtings, doors and windows is Farrow & Ball ‘ Pointing’, which has just enough warmth in it so that it doesn’t seem so stark against a coloured wall. For ceilings, I regularly use Farrow & Ball ‘ Wimborne White’, which has a touch of yellow that gives ceilings a warmer glow than a bright white would.

Last but not least in the prep camp, seal and prime your walls with an external sealer or primer (available from all DIY outlets) – this will ensure the absolute best surface for painting on. Anything else? READ NEXT: Add affordable style to your home with the best laminate flooring What preparation is required? There’s nothing like choosing between hundreds of shades to choose the best white paint to send even the most seasoned and decisive decorator into a spin. White is such a difficult colour to settle on because there are so many shades of white paint; from grey to pink to buttermilk and everything in between. How colour is perceived is entirely dictated by the light in the room (both natural and artificial) and the other items and colours around it. Then you’ll need to consider the architecture and age of the home or building you’re decorating, and the mood you want to set. These factors all make white one of the hardest paint colours to get exactly right. For a modern look, you can also move away from the traditional white ceiling altogether and paint the ceiling a statement colour – this could be the same as the walls for a really cohesive feel, or a different tone.'There are so many shades of white to choose from but I love Papers and Paints’ ‘SC292’ as it’s a true neutral. A lot of neutrals can lean towards being slightly pink, green, or yellow, whereas SC292 doesn’t and is therefore endlessly versatile and looks good with anything you pair it with. Whether you’re touching up the skirting boards or planning a big interior redesign, finding the best satinwood paint for your specific project is key. And while you’d be forgiven for not spotting the difference between the various brands of mid-sheen white, choosing the right paint will make the painting process and end result that much better. As the name suggests, Johnstone’s really does produce a paint solely for the important purpose of keeping your concrete garage floor clean, neat and, naturally, non-slippy. Key Specs – Paint base: Oil and water hybrid; Approx. coverage: 10-12m 2per litre; Touch-dry time: 1-2 hours; Recoat time: 4-6 hours; Other colours available: YesI’m often drawn to pink tones when decorating. Whether it’s a salmon or plaster shade, or more sugary sweet, I think pink always envelopes a room and gives it that underlying warmth. Dimity is white to the eye but if you put it next to a sheet of bright white paper, it’s got a pink hue. I actually chose to paint everything in the same shade; so the skirting, the moulding, the picture rail and cornice, even the ceiling are all in ‘Dimity’. It’s just cosy and I love how the space has now become a blank canvas.” Christian Bense, interior designer Marianne Shillingford, Creative Director at Dulux explains, 'It’s easy to understand why it can be so difficult to choose just the right white for your walls when there is so much choice.' Our trade paint emulsion is available in a selection of neutral colour choices ranging from pure brilliant white to magnolia and classic grey. With tin sizes ranging from 2.5L to 15L, choose the right size for the job in a range of finishes including eggshell, gloss, matte, satin and silk. Alternatively, opt for warm neutrals. ‘Maybe Maggie’ is a popular choice, as is ‘Flutterby’– an almost white. If you want something a bit creamier ‘Up Up Away’ and ‘Marbles’ are good choices.'

If you want an easy life, then we’d advise using a simple matt emulsion as it will be easy to apply and will give results that won’t show up every last bump and lump in your ceilings. You don’t necessarily need to use a specialist ceiling paint, but if you can budget for one, it’s well worth considering – they may make your life even easier as they’re designed to avoid spatter and dry more slowly for a better finish. Consequently, if you want to achieve the appearance of true white in a south-facing room, it's best to err on the side of cooler tones which will balance out the warmth of the natural light. While the classic Pure Brilliant White is the obvious option to counterpoint more vibrantly painted walls, Crown also offers its Matt Emulsion in 64 other hues, including the soothing mid-grey of City Break, the murky, misty green of Khaki Twist, and the roaring red inferno of English Fire. Flora Hogg, at Craig & Rose adds, 'When swatching whites, use a pure white as a point of reference to see the true undertone of other white. However, be mindful they can seem dramatic as first due to the contrast but trust the process. Once applied, you will still recognise it as white, but you’ll also notice how it transforms and adapts with the light throughout the day.'It’s hard-wearing, easy to clean and usually very straightforward to use. While it’s most commonly found in only one or two shades of white, some brands offer a wider range of colours, giving you the option to truly personalise your space. For best results, ensure the floor is clean and apply using a brush or a fully loaded roller, applying evenly and taking care not to overspread. Once the first coat is down, leave overnight to dry fully, before going in with the second coat and leave overnight again. For such a great paint, it’s disappointing that it doesn’t come in any colours other than the standard pure brilliant white. But the elegant, soft mid-sheen and almost velvety-looking finish make it perfect for any home. It’s oil-based, so brushes will need to be cleaned with brush cleaner, and as with all oil-based paints, you should also make sure you keep the area well ventilated while painting and drying. After it’s fully dry, any future scuff marks or stains can be cleaned off without damaging the paint, making it perfect for high-traffic areas. When it comes to trade wood and metal paints our choice of fast drying, non-drip and high gloss paint finishes come in a range of colours and are suitable for multiple uses.
