About this deal

There's a minor accident as a result and Ivy's face gets a little banged up. More concerning to Ivy however is the figure that caused them to go off the road in the first place. What was that?

Every line reads like an incantation, and the result is a book pulsing with magic, one that holds the reader firmly under its spell.” UTTERLY BELIEVABLE MOTHERS, SISTERS, AND DAUGHTERS WITH THEIR HANDS FULL OF MAGIC, MAKING BAD DECISIONS because they have to. I love it. No one combines magic, darkness, and the realities of being a woman the way Melissa Albert does. Kristin Cashore, author of The Graceling Realm series We were going too fast. Too close to the trees, weeds feathering over our headlights, whisking away. Her head twisted and I saw that she was around our age, maybe a little older, eyes dilated and mouth still curling around the end of a smile. She hadn’t been crying. She’d been laughing. There is a dark and ominous feel to this book. I couldn't stop reading, every part of the story was so intriguing. My favorite character was Billy. I loved his cheery acceptance of Ivy's magic in his youth and later his hope tinged with sadness. I felt, suddenly, like I might cry. It was the pain, I told myself. The adrenaline, fizzing away. “No, no. It was a . . . car thing. I’m good.” No, your eyes are not deceiving you, this is the first time ever that you’ve seen me promote a young adult book. Not just that but this is the first time ever that I have finished, reviewed, and recommended a young adult novel! None of the parents in this book can be described as good parents, but they also aren’t bad people. They are imperfect and passing down what is likely generational trauma. Our Crooked Hearts does a wonderful job exploring a gray area that reflects real life. Some parents, not out of malice, don’t know how to be parents which is still harmful to the child. That’s a hard space to navigate. Thank you to Ms. Cat Kenney at Flatiron Books for the eArc copy of this book! Receiving it did in no way affect my review.

SECRETS. LIES. SUPER-BAD CHOICES. WITCHCRAFT. This is Our Crooked Hearts - a gripping mystery crossed with a pitch-dark fantasy from Melissa Albert, global bestselling author of The Hazel Wood. This atmospheric, powerful YA fantasy is crammed with secrets, lies, and ferociously good writing." — The Guardian (Best New Children’s Book) Dana has always been perceptive. And the summer she turns sixteen, with the help of her best friend and an ambitious older girl, her gifts bloom into a heady fling with the supernatural. As the trio’s aspirations darken, they find themselves speeding toward a violent breaking point. The gravity of Albert's prose in Our Crooked Hearts is inescapable. I love the glint and grind of its magic, its tangled inheritance, the sacrifices it demands, the bonds it makes and breaks. THIS BOOK WILL SWALLOW YOU WHOLE. Hannah Abigail Clarke, author of Scapegracers

At a stoplight he fumbled with his phone. For a few taut seconds I considered jumping out. Then he was off again, an old Bright Eyes song blasting and the wind tearing it into pieces. The music stuttered as he swerved onto the single-lane road that wound through the forest preserve. Trees closed in and my hair whipped to fluff. I closed my eyes. A standalone novel so precise and enthralling that the only possible explanation is that Albert herself is a witch...a novel that will be devoured as well as savored. It takes risks and, magically, succeeds. And whether or not Albert is in fact a witch, one thing is for sure: her words are magic." - Booklist (starred review)

Nevertheless, they return to the car and her boyfriend drives her home, where she proceeds to break up with him. Not the best start to summer break. Half of the book is also set in Chicago in (approximately) the 90’s and features teenage witches. The teenage witches in the 90’s piece gave me hardcore nostalgia for The Craft.

I loved reading the two timelines. One follows Ivy in the present and the other shows us her mother's journey in the past as she discovers her magic.
