About this deal

is the suggested retail price of the iO5, but please do not pay this, it is not justifiable in any way.

The Smart 5 5000 comes supplied with a more suitable holder too. It sits on a work surface rather than needing to be attached to a wall. It is our opinion is smarter and less unsightly. You just need to pop your phone in it, which takes a couple of seconds compared to the tens of seconds with the genius brush configuration. You phone then sits in portrait or landscape orientation and shows the on-screen timer. You’ll get up to two weeks of use from the battery but in practice, we found that 10 days is usual. This is about par for the course with iO brushes but not as good as other rival brushes, so if long battery life is very important to you, you may need to look elsewhere. And, like all iO brushes, there’s no USB charging option. Instead, you’ll get a shaver plug if you buy in the UK and a standard two-pin plug in the US. Both come with a premium travel case and a 2+ week battery life. A visible pressure sensor, 2 minute timer and pacer are built-in too. iO Series vs Genius X You have to stand in front of your smartphone when brushing and can’t really move as the brush movements need to be seen by the camera. The Series 9 comes with a power2go charging case that allows the iO to be charged inside whereas the Series 8 comes with a standard travel case.

I don’t have the figures of the number of oscillations and pulsations on the older Pro 5000 available to give confirmation of the power difference. And add to this, there have been various iterations of the 5000 over the years, so it would be important to find out the exact one to say 100%. If you can spot a good deal on it, the iO6 is a great brush. But bear in mind that if you opt for this one over the iO7 or above, you won’t get fast charging. The red light is accompanied by a slight reduction in the motor speed. You can customize the color displayed on the LED ring when the brush is on but not in use; a fun but completely unnecessary feature. You too get a visible pressure sensor, but this now lights up not only red to alert you when you brush too hard, but green too, to show you are using just the right amount of pressure. Brushing your teeth is a chore—it’s right up there with washing your hands or brushing your hair. It’s a necessity and not necessarily an activity designed to ~spark joy~ in life. Alas, it’s a daily ritual and something Oral-B has spent the greater part of 70 years mastering. They have their name stamped on all kinds of dental care. Toothpaste, mouth wash, manual brushes…you name it, they have it. But it’s their most recent launch, the iO Series 5 Rechargeable Electric Toothbrush, that’s damn near perfect and makes the act of brushing teeth, which is a rather mundane process, feel exciting(?).

Smart Pressure Sensor signals red, white or green to alert you if you’re brushing too hard, too softly or with just the right pressure. Gum Guard records total time spent brushing too hard (via free Oral-B App) to help protect gums. You can learn more about this mode and how it differs but reading our article, Oral-B cleaning modes explained. But, the whitening mode is often overrated. Smaller and less unsightly, it is designed to sit on a worktop rather than adhere to a wall or mirror. You just need to pop your phone in it, which takes a couple of seconds compared to the tens of seconds with the Genius brush configuration. You phone then sits in portrait or landscape orientation and shows the on-screen timer. The actual charging cord for the case is quite bulky. Rather than a simple USB cable, which some other toothbrush charging cases have, this one uses an adaptor which is almost as bulky as the regular charging stand. Overall, brush head reminders are a feature that are nice-to-have, but not critical. If you’re organized enough you can simply use a recurring calendar reminder. The fact that they are included on each iO model means you don’t need to factor this feature too heavily into your choice of iO brush models. Battery life should be similar, but premium models are inconsistent

Assuming you want something a bit more capable, then the iO6 represents the best value option. It has many of the most desirable features of the iO range, including the in-handle display. But, it remains relatively affordable and you get the best of both worlds, so to speak. This is the most budget-friendly of the iO brushes and it’s the only one that doesn’t offer smart features. If you know you’re going to ditch the app anyway, buying the iO3 makes sense. You’ll miss out on the customisation that the app offers, but if you just want a really good electric toothbrush, that won’t be a problem. The Series 9 comes with a power2go charging case that allows the iO to be charged inside whereas the Series 7 comes with a standard travel case. Together these alert you to relieve the pressure when brushing. Once relieved the light will go out, the brush motor speed up and the sound change again.

Combines Oral-B’s iconic dentist-inspired round brush head with gentle micro-vibrations to remove harmful bacterial plaque. You are scored at the end of a brushing session and can see just how well you cleaned each zone. If the teeth haven’t all changed to white, you haven’t done the best job you can. It is a useful tool for encouraging better habits.

All system components (e.g., toothbrush handle, charger, power cord, SmartGuide). You do not need to include accessories like the brush heads or refill stand. The Series 5 has 5 cleaning modes (daily clean, sensitive, super sensitive, intense & whitening) compared to the 4 of the Series 4 (daily clean, sensitive, super sensitive & whitening). The extra mode the iO5 has is intense. You will see that the more feature-rich, and typically more expensive models are shown on the right, compared to the more cost effective models on the left. Below, is a list of models we have compared to one another, plus some that we have compared to their Sonicare equivalents. The iO9 and 10 can hold the handle and 1 brush head only. This is because you can charge the brush inside the case. There is no battery in the case to do this. Instead, you connect the supplied proprietary power adapter. Dentists recommend replacing your brush head every 3 months or sooner if it becomes worn for an optimal clean. FOR HEALTHIER GUMS IN JUST 1 WEEK remove 100% more plaque and even 2.5X in between teeth* with ORAL-B's MOST ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY *vs a manual brush.
