About this deal

So the labor of weary weeks and months in the children’s behalf was all undone by a third-rate clerk in an executive office; but he saved the one thing he had in mind: the city government is “run” to date, and his pay is secure. Philip, if you’ve ever wondered just how much your life mattered, rest easy knowing you’ve made a profound impact on mine!

Like someone taking a treasured old item to be repaired by skilled craftspeople in the Repair Shop, when I became aware my muscles were wasting and I was losing functional capacity, I went to see a specialist consultant at the National Hospital for Neurology. I wanted to know what was wrong, and how I could be fixed.

A gentle light from an unseen source pours into the distilling simplicity of these poems. - Mark Oakley, Canon Chancellor of St Paul's Cathedral Maria sits under the tree next to her kiosk on a hot Saturday afternoon. Her shop is now truly open all hours (almost). Now she’s making more money than ever and she’s got her eyes on some larger solar panels. Her wish list is long: she wants to power a TV and a fridge (ice cold Cokes would do a roaring trade in sweltering Makutopora). Finally, she says she wants to generate enough power to light up the whole street. With a little extra solar power, the sky’s the limit. Capacity: Solar PV is the most widely owned electricity source in the world in terms of number of installations, and its uptake is accelerating. It accounted for 20% of all new power generation capacity in 2015. In the last five years, global installed capacity has grown from 40 gigawatts (GW) to 227 GW. By comparison, the entire generation capacity of Africa is 175 GW. If you are in the mood for a book that is comforting and hopeful then look no further. Rowan Hill was idyllic and its occupants were vividly rendered. Set in Shropshire, England in a hamlet nestled into the side of the Stiperstones, the author has created a setting that you want to visit. Her movements were graceful as she lifted the painting off the wall and wrapped it carefully in tissue and then brown paper. Your article reminded me of the book Who Moved My Cheese? by Spencer Johnson. It also reminded me of Michael O’Brien’s story, “I Think They Look Cool, Dad,” published in the anthology Dear Gratitude, created by Chris Palmore. In it, O’Brien says: “So slowly, I started to see my scars through a lens of gratitude. They weren’t ugly; they were merit badges that showed I survived something horrific. They were my indication that I was still alive.” He goes on to talk about Kintsugi.

Started off well: I was impressed with the good, enjoyable-to-read writing style, and it was quite gripping and interesting initially. Her productivity has shot up too. ‘I now make 150 chapatis per day and over 65 mandazis, up from 60 and 25 before I got solar,’ she excitedly explains. The author has an easy to read style, really enjoyable, with excellent powers of description - I love the passage she quotes above, but some of my equal favourites are some of the more mundane where she engages the characters in activities and brings them so vividly to life. I want to spend New Year's Eve flying paper planes from the hilltop, walk through the woods, be part of the wonderful community at Rowan Hill - in fact, having read the book, I really do feel I have been part of it all. I did not mean to preach. I was just thinking that the Association for Improving the Condition of the Poor, in its fifty years of battling with all that makes the slum, has come nearer that ideal than any and all the rest of us. And the president of it these ten years, the same who with his brother tried to reform Gotham Court, is the head, too, of the citizens’ union which is the whole reform programme in a nutshell. All of which is as it ought to be. As long as we are “still alive,” there’s living to be done. It’s best not to waste the precious time dwelling over questions such as “why me?” and do something valuable with it. What can be more valuable than helping others by sharing our personal challenges and experiences with them?

Customer reviews

Night draws in relatively early in Makutopora and when it’s dark, it’s really dark. In the past, Maria had no alternative but to close her shop.
